He trains him, yes, and his child-like curiosity drives him mad, but at the same time that's what he loves about his son. That he is NOT like him.

@@LordyT34 I think its an example of how a franchise that originally had run full circle can be rebooted with a more mature perspective. I think there is a certain beauty of it on a meta level, most people here probably would have played the original games as kids and teenagers, where the gritty and violent take on greek mythology and Kratos as a grim and brutal anti-hero on a quest for revenge would have reasonated probably with most of us. That audience has grown up and the franchise has grown up with them, focussing now on a much more emotionally complex and layered story.

What I like is that they used that in the story as well. We all thought because of what happened to kratos throughout his life, he wouldn’t be a great father. And even Kratos himself thinks that of about himself. Kratos was so scared to mess up at being a father that he just decided the best way of not messing it up was to keep his distance from Atreus. And obviously that’s not the best parenting technique. So that’s why Atreus and Kratos are basically strangers in the beginning of the game. Kratos wants to be close with his son but is afraid that he’ll fuck it up somehow and Atreus wants to be closer with his Father but thinks that Kratos already doesn’t like him. Great writing all around

While I haven’t played this game I love watching it. You really can tell kratos has matured. He’s full of regret. Haunted by his past. He sees his former self full of wild fury in his son. And he’s trying to teach the BOI. I think he regrets his actions in Greece. I mean he utterly destroyed the Greek world. Slaughtered nearly the entire pantheon himself. After his son kills Magni or was it Moddie... the smaller one with the shield. Kratos says “there are consequences to killing a God.” I bet dollars to dounuts he’s thinking of that happened when he killed this Greek brothers and sisters, kill Poseiden and.thr oceans rise to drown the world of men

NGL I just realized Kratos's body language is incredible. Kratos clearly loves the boy. It's likely his constant engagement in hunts is to prevent the boy from being influenced too much by him. Kratos is firm when needed and doesn't shout over unless Atreus really does something bad(like killing needlessly). He goes down to height level to ensure he isn't imposing discipline via authoritive posture. If we all had Dads like Kratos now maybe we'd be a little more wiser

There is also the nuanced ways how we can see that Kratos own upbringing and personal traumas prevent him from truly being the father he could be, which we can see in this scene. Like when Atreus is clearly saddened by killing the Deer and Kratos wants to reach out to him and comfort him, but then does not. Kratos can't just teach his son to be better, he himself has to become better as well, unlearn the way he bottled up his emotions and everything that could make him soft just to survive.

As someone who has played all the God of War games, this one is the best. I like the demeanor and manner of this Kratos. It wasn't all rage and anguish, but humane and compassionate. The game showed the growth of the character and how one can change when his heart has succumb to love for his child.
