This driver is doing a good job of following the most important rule when it comes to the two stroke Detroit Diesel engines which is "Drive it like you stole it".

My family had a trucking company back in the 1960s-80s. I grew up two doors down from the terminal. All the fleet was Detroit powered GM. Every afternoon I’d hear that sound as all the trucks came back. Similarly, all the fire engines used to have Detroits. A few minutes after the fire whistle blew, you could hear the Detroit scream all over town.

Rick Delair I read an article about GM two stroke development in the 1930s. Now I’m an engineer on the railroad. My company just had a bunch of 4000 hp GMs rebuilt. They have 2 strokes which are a direct evolution of the original 1930s designs. Never mind 71 cubic inches per cylinder, I’m talking 710.

I said same thing. I remember him coming from work when he hauled brand new Toyotas in the early 70's til 74-75. He hauled the new cars from the pier to dealerships in and around jersey. I think this is why I love the sound of a Detroit. This sounds just like his truck. He passed on the day after mother's day in 03 .

Far away in the distance, could be heard the unmistakeable sound of a Commer TS3, changing up and down the gears. My dad swore it was a motor bike, but even at my very young age, I knew better ! Sure enough, about 30 minutes later, a Commer cattle truck appeared, and roared on past ! It's something I've alway's remembered !!

A real truck from the sensible days. For a two stroke diesel that engine is in excellent condition, extremely clean running. Nice simple technology, none of this EGR nonsense, which works for a while and then clogs up the inlet manifolds with carbon, and no need to keep pumping “pigs piss” down the exhaust either! It just goes to show how we are all being fed a load of nonsense by those who make money from unnecessary technological change. Ain’t it lovely to hear an old ‘Jimmy’ doing it’s thing!

My thoughts exactly. They certainly don't make them like they used to. I basically grew up around trucks. So I'm familiar with that classic Detroit diesel sound. I also remember in the UK the Commer TS3 as as a child in the 60's. IMO the Commer TS3 is the British version of the Detroit diesel. They operate on the same two stroke design as the Detroit. Nice "clean" running Detroit. It just shows that if you know how to properly tune a Detroit diesel, you can get amazingly low exhaust emissions. Well done job to the mechanic who did the work on this one. There aren't many guys left nowadays that can make Detroit run this well as most have either retired or died. I've worked on Detroits since my teen years. Too bad they're no longer made in the two stroke application.

Not a 6N71. They were 6-71N55 or 6-71N60 or 6-71N65 depending on size of injectors which designated the horsepower. A full rated [6-71N65] 6 cyl inline was 238 hp. All needed a supercharger to run, but none were turbocharged. This truck is a delight. Also: a Jacobs Engine Brake on any Detroit Diesel provided very little braking effect compared to one fitted on a 4 cycle engine. (Cat or Cummins) All 53 series, 71 series, and 92 series Detroits were 2 cycle engines.

Used to herd an IH truck, 6-71 and 9-speed OD with a McNeilus mixer on the back. Wished it'd had a 13 under. No jake. Twas what it was! And a log truck like this one was the 1st diesel I saw when I was a kid, a long time ago!

I believe that's the same engine that was used in M-113 armored personnel carriers. Cold start with no warm-up time needed, to go full throttle.

Optic ForSyth Yeah, no kidding. The EPA asshats took away our badass gutless John Deere tractors away and gave us these tractors that can hardly run right to mow with all day and they'd be in the damn shop getting fixed.

Yeah it's not the manufacturers' fault for building crap. It's the EPA's fault for thinking we want to breathe oxygen instead of carbon monoxide. Obvious, really.
