That is one sweet sounding diesel. The truck looks immaculate.
The ultimate COE with a 2 stroke Detroit. You have done a fine job. A piece of art that will last.
Man, Oh Man! What a beauty! I had a good friend who's dad drove a '53 Jimmy - very similar to this one - only black and white. It was a Hostess bakery transport and he drove from Ellensburg, Washington to Seattle and back everyday over Snoqualmie pass - rain, snow or shine. Had to chain-up in the winter. What a job!!! When he was coming home, we could hear that Detroit 2 miles away! He'd roar past us and park it out in front of their house! This sounds to me like the same Detroit 6 his dad had. They sound like they would come apart when approaching red-line! Class 7, right? Having restored several vintage cars, looking at that undercarriage makes me tired just to think about all the work you have done! Well worth it though. Thanks for letting us see it all. Jake brakes are totally cool!!!!
Oh man what a beauty! Amazing paint job also, you can see orange when the sun hit us just right!
What a beautiful work of art. Great restoration. Best sounding diesel engine ever made.

Gosh. Thats a real sweetheart of a truck u got there mister riley. I really enjoyed the video of this piece of history and thank you for sharing it with the world
You obviously put one heck of a lot of effort into your truck. What a beauty!!!
When I was a kid, Highway 99/CA ran right through down so I got to hear a lot of diesel trucks go by. I could spot the Detroit Diesels every time - you could hear them a mile away. Thanks for the memory.....
How can anyone dislike this video, awesome awesome awesome.... love this truck

The sound of a GMC Detroit engine, has a sound like no other engine. I could always tell when my husband was near our home, when I heard that sound. Always gave my heart a jolt when I heard it coming down the highway. That sound has disappeared and my husband has passed many years ago. I enjoyed the whole video, which also brought back my own memories of driving also. Thanks.

Mee too , they were all over the place . thanks for looking.
We had a picture of an old Peterbuilt hanging on the wall at our shop , it had a 318 Detroit . Every morning we had to wipe oil off of the floor under the picture . That's a very nice restoration , very clean job . Looks like a 238 6-71 engine .Enjoyed the video . I recently rebuilt an older 238 with the external fuel lines .

A work of Art, nothing less!
I remember those cannonball GMC tractors in the 1950s. Here on the east coast of the US most of the trucks were IH, White, Mack, Autocar, Diamond T, Reo, GMC, Ford & Dodge. It was rare to see a Peterbilt, KW or Freightliner here. They were western trucks back then. Later Diamond T & Reo merged becoming Diamond Reo, Freightline partnered with White & became White Freightliner & I think it was only a cab over truck then. The big sellers here in the 1950's were IH, White, Mack, Autocar & GMC. When I occasionally got west of the Mississippi, that is when you began to see KW & Pete. It was also the days when the ICC restricted trucking companies to certain states. When deregulation happened under President Reagan, it eventually put many of the east coast trucking companies out of business. McLean (big user of GMC tractors), Hennis, Red Line, Pilot, Mason-Dixion etc etc. They just couldn't compete when they lost their dedicated territory & gained a large number of new competitors who expanded into the east from other parts of the country. The famous two cycle engine was badged "GMC" then but if you spec it in an IH or White etc, they called it a Detroit but it was the same engine. Most of the non GMC/Detroit engine trucks had Cummins. Cat wasn't in it then. Mack of course had a Mack engine. It was easy to tell if it was a GMC/Detroit coming down the road but after you were on the road long enough, it also became easty to tell the different in the sound of a Cummins and a Mack.

definitely one of the kind...looks and sounds like a dream
What a beautiful looking and sounding truck very nice indeed!
Many thanks to you for your video and lovely GMC Detroit Truck! Very interesting! Diesel 2T have a sound giving the impression to run much faster and reactive than 4T. I'm not so found in engines but I don't understand why 2T diesel are not so common in Europe. Really I don't know. My Grandfather was a truck driver in the 40, 50, 60 's. He had and drove trucks like Lancia Esatau, OM, Fiat 190, Fiat 690,etc. Unfortunately I don't have videos about them. Very nice breathtaking USA Country landscape! So nice, lovely and quiet!
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Love the sound of a Driptroit. Had an old Pettibone backhoe with a 371 and I would love to hear that thing scream all day
smooth. We had not many GMC's n Europe but sill... We mostly had Chevy's up till 5.5 tons. Heavy loaders were Mack's. And the Chevy's sounded so soft.
WHAT? No test drive? What a tease. Awesome truck!!!
Youre welcome. If interested Detriot is a division of General Moters. Thier first 2 stroke diesel was called the 53 seties, next was 71 series and finally the silver92. Todays Detriots are 4 stroke and called 60 series. It is one of the first ECM engines put into on highway trucks. Enjoy that old Jimmy not many of them left.

The 71 series came out before the 53 series. It powered many military of WWII. I don't know for sure, hut it may have debuted in the 30's. The 53 series was released for the 58 model year, and debuted in the fall of '57.

+madtownmadman You are right the first model released was the 6-71 N went into production around 1938 and did great service in WW2 powering anything from Navy landing boats, through tanks, trucks, pumps, generators anything that needed power probably had a 6-71 bolted on the front.
