Detroit Diesel Cold Start! The Legendary Screamin' Jimmy 2 Stroke 6-71 in a 1970s White Cabover...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hi guys! I went over to Colin and Laura's farm last weekend to watch Colin fire up the old White / GMC manure spreader truck and to record the first start this year of the Detroit 6-71. She's backed up by the Allison 4-speed automatic and is gently cruising through her retirement in the country, haha!

I grew up in Oklahoma and those oil field Haliburton trucks with those Detroit two strokes would come through downtown bristow just screaming and shifting every two seconds but hardly going fast at all and make children cry, louder than a freight train if there was three or more of them in a convoy. Just black smoke and hulk angry all the way. 😆

I've watched Scott at Bus Grease Monkey for at least the last 2 or 3 years. He's the Detroit Diesel Master if there ever was one. And a master of proper GM and other coaches repairs. Watch his channel a lot and have learned a lot about large vehicle maintenance challenges for sure. Good to see the old Detroit still singing!

What a coincidence! Today's my birthday, and I wake up to find a bonus video of one of my favourite engines ever made! Back in 1994 I bought a GMC Newlook bus from the city of Kingston and owned it for almost 11 years. It had a 6V-71 Inclined engine with de-rated injectors (N55 orange tag) that I replaced with N65 White tags in '97. I was really careful to review the specs and choose just the right one that wouldn't overfuel the oval port liners but give just the right delivery curve for the upright equivalent engine. Can't say I noticed much improvement with the horrible VH torque converter it had (you know the one), but it sure made a lot more black smoke! I love how those engines were built to be "Mr. Potato-Head" mix-and-matchable for all sorts of possible power and orientation combinations. There was a 6-71 "Inclined" engine built for diesel railcars that was meant to lie almost flat, under the floor deck (I think for reefer service?) that shows up in the service manual. GM has always made the best service manuals - they're written with a lot of general shop-practices information, like a high-school textbook. The only manuals I used to read cover-to-cover when I was a kid. And, of course - despite being terribly underpowered for their size by today's standards and being gross-polluters, the sound they make is absolutely delightful and always reminds me of my old bus. If I ever get a farm, I'm coming after another Newlook! Cheers Scott, and thanks again for uploading this!

Wow! Teenage me really appreciates that machine. I used to drag a "honey wagon" around Grandpa's farm with an Alice Chalmers B tractor. The tractor had no electric start and the spreader was ground driven. Throw in the travois on the left side and I always had a great morning before school! It was my Cousin's job to hitch horses. Boy howdy, did I ever get the better end of that deal!
