View from the Dodge while heading back from the annual Mother Lode Round-up Parade for 2017. Just letting the Detroit do it's "thing". For those curious, I'm using 4th thru 10th gears, [1st gear is a good crawler for parades]. This is also the first real outing with the Jakes installed.

That yellow with red pin striping over the green screams just as loud as that engine. What a combo!

LOL! Yeah it's a "loud" combination, alright! Reminds me more of a John Deere tractor, actually! The wheels used to be painted that same lime yellow/green. Finally got the wheels cleaned up and painted a more acceptable Argent Silver. Poor old girl hasn't been out of the barn since Covid!

They do sound nice, now set the rpms to 2100, leave it there for 5 or 6 hours. I've done that pulling a 24 foot cultivator. now my favorite response in a conversation is "What?"

Sounds great! I miss hearing those engines run. We I started logging everything on the job was Detroit powered. Loaders had 353T's or 453, skidders and cutters had 453T's. Our 5 ton 6x6 had a 671 and some of the trucks had 8V92's in them. They all have a different sound and tone that I can still recognize today. Even with the hearing damage they caused. Had a 471 run away and overspeed,pulled the E stop and cut off the air!
Screaming Jimmy's are the only engines that constantly sound like you're doing twice the speed limit when you're not. I bet alot of people who weren't familiar with engines back in the day thought it was a car doing 100mph in the distance until they realized it was a truck.
Sweet Jesus where has this video been all my life
Glorious racket from a better day when pretty much everything under the sun could be had with a hint of that cool aqua green, alotta noise and of course some black drippings

Gasoline four cylinders: *Small, no power at low rpm, no torque ever unless boosted* Big ass 212ci diesel inline 4: *Still no power but decent torque and sounds good, also is two-stroke*
@rayota260

They have more than just decent torque. Power doesn't matter much in a big truck.
I ran an old push pull terex scraper.v12tt in the front and 6v92t in the rear. After lunch you put a gallon of oil in the 12 and 1/2 gallon in the 6v92t. It drank over 320 or more gallon of diesel every day. Gave you plenty of time to grease it.

I wish more DD engines made their into the UK. Bedford once offered the 6V and 8V71 in the TM lorries but it wasn't successful due to poor mpg and its high revving nature.
@lsswappedcessna

It isn't even revving that high, maybe 1500rpm, if even that? It's a two-stroke, so just like a gasoline two-stroke it sounds like it's running twice as fast as it really is.

@enginenut5
5 жыл бұрын
The tranny is an Eaton-Fuller RTO-910 Roadranger. Haven't had much of a load in the truck since finishing the resto-mod, but I'm sure the tranny would be well suited for any kind of load with the RPM spread it has for the Detroit. The "Achilles Heel" the truck does have, is the rear U-joint and the tired ring & pinion of the original truck. The U-joint is tiny from the days of the original flathead six, and the third member has seen a lot of water over the years. For what the vehicle is used for, I don't anticipate any problems other than the rear end is very short at 5.62:1 ! I'd be more concerned about the huge torque the screamer makes on those old parts!
I want a pickup truck that sounds this great.

@BenjaminEsposti
7 жыл бұрын
Justin Myslive, IMHO, it really depends on the transmission. The transmission is key to putting power to the wheels. You can have a powerful engine yet an inefficient transmission which doesn't most of that all that power to the wheels.
@justinmyslive4108
7 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Esposti true. In my opinion they weren't the best truck application. A Detroit could match the torque of a Cummins or a Caterpillar on their best day. I'm not saying Detroit is a bad engine. for a stationary engine such as a pump or a generator a Detroit is the only thing to have
