Just a place that I put up varied videos of my projects, mostly intended to share ideas/subjects that might be of interest to others. I'm certainly no expert, but I do enjoy the things I do. I work mostly with things related to the machining / mechanical world, with some electrical / electronics thrown in. Engines, namely those of unique designs or no longer made, are of particular interest. Though vintage/antique trucks are a mainstay, I also delve in the automotive world.

Freaking awesome man! Love the old Detroits!
Absolutely beautiful
Turning diesel fuel into beautiful noise...
Sounds like an 8v series engine
The 2-series and 4-series have a similar sound to the 8v series, while the 1-series, 3-series, 6/6v series and 24v series have a similar sound to the buzzin dozen 12v series. The 16v series sounds like an angry V8.
That yellow with red pin striping over the green screams just as loud as that engine. What a combo!
LOL! Yeah it's a "loud" combination, alright! Reminds me more of a John Deere tractor, actually! The wheels used to be painted that same lime yellow/green. Finally got the wheels cleaned up and painted a more acceptable Argent Silver. Poor old girl hasn't been out of the barn since Covid!

What type transmission you have in the truck??
It's an Eaton-Fuller RTO-910 Roadranger 10 speed. Non-syncro 5 speed box with a built-in sycro'd 2 speed range select.
Cammed?
I have no reason to believe it's anything but full stock. I've only had the pan and heads off, nothings been checked except the bores. #6 needs a sleeve job due to apparent water in that hole. Was going to finish the project and carry it on the bed of my stock '33 BB truck, but the truck is up for sale now, so the 60 will probably be sold too. Too many projects and no time! 😕
Now that was cool. Good job videoing the engine

Are twin-screw type blowers compatible with these? Like, if I wanted to upgrade to a more efficient blower, could I theoretically equip it with a Whipple instead of whatever it has from the factory? Obviously assuming custom fabrication, but I just mean in the way that it flows.
There's been a KZread video of a shop using a Whipple blower on a 6V53 (maybe a V71?). Seemed to do well, as I'm pretty sure most any similar blower would also work. As long as you're "puffing" on the intake to provide the needed scavenging at all RPMs, it should all work.

HI, that's some magnificent sound, is it a cross plane four cylinder? From the sound it seems like it is
It is. One separate throw for each cylinder, 90 degs. apart. Required for the 2 stroke setup.
@@enginenut5 thanks for your feedback, it screems like crazy. Great machine
@@enginenut5 does it use a balance shaft for torsional imbalance?
@@giuseppe6217 . No . Not needed BECAUSE of the Cross-plane architecture . Lateral Balance will be great . Longitudinally it would want to rock a bit , but you have a Gearbox bolted to it and therefore 4 mounts . Two Engine and two Gearbox working together to hold it .

Can’t beat the sound of a Detroit!
Did you replace the rubber seal rings where the oil supply connects the master to drones? If so where did you find them new. Mine are probably 50 years old or more.
Hey Peyton, yeah, everything replaceable is new. I'll have to go thru my notes to see who I dealt with for the seals. Seems to me Cummins ended up being the source for them thru the parts dealer I used back in Florida. I'll check tomorrow.
@@enginenut5 ,thanks I'd appreciate the info
@@peytonmaterne2970 Sorry for the late reply, the weather has been nuts around here (Northern Calif) lately, power outages, flooding, etc!! Anyway, I found the receipt for the seals. The company is Diesel Specialists, LLC, 8784 S. Choctaw Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70815. (225) 928-1913 The part no. is 3871682. The receipt didn't specifically call out the seals as used with Jakes, so you probably should verify the part over the phone. I ordered these back in mid 2016, so I'm assuming the company is still around. Hope this gets what you need! -Steve
@@enginenut5 thank you. I will take that part number and see what I can find. Trying to gather everything I think I'll need before I put mine on.
nice cob over engine truck , but you really should not have ignored that clearly standing STOP SIGN !!!
LOL! Looks that way, doesn't it! Actually, the stop is for the "straight thru" traffic in the left lane, the dedicated right turn is a non-stop.
AWESOME👍👍👍👍👍
How much more does the 4-53t weigh than it's original engine?. Did you have to do any mods to the chassis to make it fit?
The 4-53T alone weighs in at around 1350-1375 lbs. as configured and it's guessed that the original flathead I6 gas engine alone weighed in the neighborhood of 500 lbs. So, you're looking at a gain of about 850 just for the engine swap. Tranny went from a small 150 lb. 3 speed to the sizable 626 lb. 10 speed, adding another 476 lbs.! With the total ~ 1386 lb. increase, it's no wonder I had to add air bags under the front springs! 🙄
@@enginenut5 I bet the original flathead I6 engine wasn't that powerful and the 4-53t with a 10 speed box makes up for it. 623KG is quite heavy for a 3.5L engine and very tall as well but all Screaming Jimmy's are bigger and heavier than the more conventional 4 stroke 4, 6, V6, V8 etc diesel engines.
@@jaggassThe Detroit was rated at 170 HP, about twice that of the inline 6. Of course, being a Diesel, the torque (402 ft-lb) was many times that of the I6, and the advent of the high number of gear ratios in truck transmissions greatly increased the usefulness.
@@enginenut5 Very useful upgrade and still looks original too. I can imagine getting parts for the original engine must be difficult now.
@@jaggass I haven't had to make any repairs so far, so don't really know how bad parts acquisition is getting, tho I'm sure its not getting any cheaper or easier. New major castings are non-existent since none have been made for 30+ years. It is still possible to rebuild with aftermarket parts, and surprisingly, its still legal! I imagine this little 4-banger will outlive me!
Love that truck!
Love that sound and smell
That thing is greeeat. I just found 453 for my 52 chevy. What turbo setup you running
Hi Troy - The engine is fully stock using an Air-Research TO4 factory turbo. These 453's came with a turbo (designated as 453-T) or w/o a turbo (designated simply as a 453).
Thx a bunch feller. Mine is a N/A, and I'm ordering the better pistons and such freshening it up into a turbo version

Thanks, Houston! This was filmed on the back roads of Sonora CA leaving a parade back in May of '17.
Hermoso sonido y rugido, a pesar de ser un motor relativamente pequeño
Greetings from Puerto Rico! How long did it take you to finish this project?
All toll, about 4 years once I decided what I was going to do with it. Wanted to keep it as original looking as possible, but also use vintage for the mods.
Sweet music!
Thanks for your reply. I am sure the information will save me countless hours of looking. Still have countless hours of planning before I make the big decision. Right now I am working on some rust that is quite common in these older vehicles. Only one panel has serious issues, the bottom of the passenger door. Which will take countless hours to fabricate a new bottom. But that is what we do, love it. Thanks again,
Love your approach to the hydraulics used. If you can I would like some part numbers for pump valves and the hyd. cab locks. I am working on a 48 Ford F6 COE, I also have a 46 conventional cab F6. Still doing some measuring but plan to marry the two into a 4 door COE with a tilt cab. Leaning towards a 1987 F250 4x4 for the frame or my 1993 Ford 350 2wd with a 7.3 turbo and 5 speed. Not sure which makes more sense. That's a lot of hours, nights, weekends and any other time I can find. Thanks for the video.
Hey Bruce: I went to Northerntools.com for both the pump/reservoir and the control valve. Pump is a #1261009, valve is a #RD2575T4ESA1. The cab locks are Power Packer #LH50000104. They have a website, PowerPackerUS.com that could supply everything you need including cylinders. May not be the cheapest, but I like their quality. In case you haven't seen it, page 7 of my showcase website, www.vintagetrucksbarn.com/, has some decent pics of the tilt mechanics. Yeah, you can definitely spend some serious hours on this stuff! 4 years in this project and that was just the running gear! Hang on to that 7.3! I sold my 2000 a few years ago and still kick myself!!!!!
Really great looking truck! The restoration job done on it is second to non! Thanks for sharing!

What gives a Screaming Jimmy that distinct knocking sound at lower RPM? Is it the timing or just the design?. I've heard a GM/Opel 2.3 4 cyl 4 stroke diesel engine that sounds similar at lower RPM yet it's unrelated. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pGeo18OSm7e1cqg.html. It only has 59bhp and was fitted in the like of the Opel Rekord, Vauxhall Carlton and the Bedford CF a panel van which GM based the Chevrolet Van on. I know that all diesel engines knock to a degree.
Hi Michael - I suspect that the Opel engine is old enough to use mechanical injectors? Most of the pre-electronic diesels had a fairly noticeable clatter at low RPM mainly due to the fact that they would receive the entire fuel charge early on during each ignition period, thus setting off a rather hefty ball of fire near the top of the power stroke resulting in a "crack" sound resonating through the block from each cylinder. These new electronic diesels and their modern "sustained delivery" injectors will feed just enough fuel to start ignition at peak compression resulting in a smaller, less violent flame front, after which the fuel injection continues, fueling the now-burning, expanding charge as the piston is pushed towards the bottom of the stroke (what Ford based their "Power Stroke" name on). My Detroit's idling clatter is very noticeable when I pass by the front of the vehicle in my Cold Start video.
@@enginenut5 That engine dates back to 1980 so entirely mechanical. I know that if timing is a bit advanced on the the fuel pump it can make a diesel engine sound more clattery but can be down the design as well. Some diesel engines don't clatter as much as others like old Merc ones in the W123. Very smooth for it's time.
