GM Truck OEM Off-Road Light Switch Install

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video shows how to perform a factory installation of an off road light switch and wiring in a GM Truck(Sierra/Silverado). It also works for Canyon/Colorado trucks. Your BCM should have come from the factory pre-programmed But early models may not have.

    This is an amazing video. Couple of questions if you don't mind. I recently bought a rebuilt 16 2500HD Silverado that came factory without fog lights but when they replaced the front bumper they added them at my request. I can't find a harness online that hooks into the lights and I am wondering if there are already plugs in the truck somewhere for them? After seeing this video I looked up this switch but couldn't find it for a Silverado in any trim level. Did they make this switch for the Silverado? Where did you find all the X port information to know which wire to add where? Thanks. I'm gonna have to check out this channel. Again, great work on the video.

    @tinkering fox, finally a video on some circuit mods. I'm in need of some help though as I'm rather new to the electrical world. I just did a new bumper install on my 18 silverado 1500 which removed the fog lights essentially. However, the hookup from the lights is still there just not being used now. I want to hook up some offroad LEDs (one bar and 4 cubes) but want to keep the factory look on the inside so am curious if I can hook the lights into the fog light's existing wiring and have the interior switch work inside. I worry about the overall draw on the existing set-up or if this will blow a fuse or something along those lines. Any advice on how to set it up without having to install new switches on the dash?

  • @kevefox

    @kevefox

    5 жыл бұрын

    Dave Warriner thanks! ‘16+Up should be programmed for this. You have a few easy options. This is a cheap option for your dash. This is a GM part but the indicator light on the button won’t light up but other than that it’s perfect and $100 less than the one currently on sale through GM. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263473206828 I wouldn’t hook up more than two cubes in place of your fogs without using a relay. Also your fogs turn off when your high beams are on, here’s the fix for that..... www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/162734-foglights-on-with-high-beams/ Next do you have harnesses for your lights? Meaning did they come with relays and such? Third there is a slick way to make your led bar/cubes come on with your high beams but only when the headlight switch is in the “on” position not “auto”. I’m going to do a write-up/video on this really soon on my ‘17 2500. I’m ordering the bar/mount tonight. The output from the BCM for off road lights is positive but only strong enough to trigger a relay.

    Awesome video. "Almost" exactly what I've been looking for. You're obviously well educated in DC power. I'm adding LED fog lights to my 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2. This model came without fog lights from the factory so there's no fog light option on my light switch. My low beams also stay on when my high beams come on. Would you know if there's a way to wire with the OEM light switch with dual auxiliary buttons.

    Great video!! thank you. does the switch latch to the high beam on a 2018 sierra? I work in the bush and have my light bar wired in my high beam trigger right now. With the switch on, the light bar will only come on with the HB, switch off, no light bar. I want to keep the same set up but would love to use this OEM switch. I refuse to drill holes in my dash, so my light bar switch just sits loose in my cup holder...

    The only thing that this switch does is creates a positive output signal. On my wife’s truck I did what you want trying to do. With the OEM switch on the highbeams will activate the off-road light relay. If the switch is not on the highbeams will not activate the off-road light relay. I’m going to do a video and Install sometime soon for a local in my area where I will do exactly what you were talking about. The highbeam signal is negative so it will work on terminal 86 of the relay and your positive signal can go to terminal 85 of the relay for the off-road lights. The only downfall is that some lower quality relays will backfeed and illuminate the off-road light icon on the switch itself so a diode in line is preferred

Oddly enough I was looking at doing something similar to my 2014 sierra(gas) but wiring for smoked roof lights+side step markers(I've blacked out the Denali grill with some black housing stock looking headlights; so it'd look sick!) I know I don't have the cluster icon so I wont bother running to the bcm, but do you think that i should be able to get ignition power off the existing switch connector, and use that offroad switch second button to initiate the markers/roof(wouldn't require a hold?)? Also I like what you did with the amber light bar, might run a separate branch circuit and copy that! And fyi, I have seen some of your other videos and like what you're doing, the ignition relay video(and the garage door opener programming, lol) was well informing and plan to do a similar thing to run an air compressor, air horn and other goodies! Search GM Document #4573588. Any dealer can print them for you too. There is a Colorado fans page with a quality PDF of them. Another option you have is to just tap into the fog light signal coming from the switch. A momentary press of the switch will turn on the fogs while a longer press will turn on the fogs as well as the ORL. You can then quickly press the fogs again to turn them off leaving the ORL on. You just need to run a second wire from the fogs signal over to the ORL input at the BCM. The dash icon will illuminate and the constant signal will come from the ORL output from the BCM to your relay.

I’ve got a 2015 High Country and ordered the harness through Phil, but my RC light bar has a high and low beam on the toggle switch and two relays. The toggle has red, white, and blue wires. Together the red, blue, and trigger wire turn on the high setting, the red, white, and trigger turn on the low. Also, the amber light on the OEM off-road switch does light up, but pushing it and holding for 3 secs doesn’t control the light bar. I just want the high beam to run on this light bar when I push the off-road lights, but I’m stuck. Any thoughts?

Here’s a workaround for ya! kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWipr5OYXcK1pJM.html Also there are three wires going into the RC light bar, one is ground, one is light bar power and one is DRL power. Wire both power wires together. The high beam signal at the BCM can be tapped into and used as the negative side of your relay trigger (86) and the signal from your latching relay (positive) can be used as the positive trigger (85). The first few minutes of this video will give you a solid foundation on how the relay for your ORL works…..kzread.info/dash/bejne/f6qquql8kqSbibA.html

  • @kevefox

    @kevefox

    5 жыл бұрын

    Awesome username! So I assume you also want to add fog lights? The BCM should already be programmed for the ORL even without being built with fogs. There is a different switch that has blue background light with only the ORL button that would be an identical install. PN:23458496 (Blue background with ORL button, no fogs) If you wanted to add both fogs and ORL you would use a different switch with both buttons... PN:23458492...updated to PN:84168423 (Blue background with both ORL and Fog buttons) Adding fogs is much more involved if you want to make it factory. Without BCM Programing you’ll need to use a latching relay to convert the momentary signal from the fog button to a constant one. Then use this signal to control a relay for your fogs. If you want to keep it as factory as possible then there are some color coded circuits to run under the hood to and from your X50A (under hood fuse block). Otherwise just use the output from the relay to power your fogs with a widely available harness from eBay. Thanks for watching, more videos to come discussing this

    cdahlman10 If your truck is 2016 and later the Offroad light button will work because the BCM should have programming. The switch puts out a momentary signal and the BCM will convert that signal to a constant positive output for triggering a relay for your lights. The fog lights however our different, if your truck did not come with them then the BCM will not latch that signal. There is a way to do that however. Email me, tinkering fox@gmail.com and I will send you a link to a video I am working on that is not public yet which will show you how it’s done.

  • @kevefox

    Thank you! You can just unplug the seatbelt wiring under the seat. Today I towed a Duramax out of the Highway Patrol impound. I towed it in two weeks ago for the investigation of a fatal accident where it was traveling over 60 NB and was struck head-on by an F150 traveling SB at over 70. I had a ten minute conversation with the driver who was relatively uninjured. Without a doubt he would have been killed if he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Neither truck caused the wreck. A third vehicle came from a side road and pushed the F150 into the Duramax. There was zero time to react. As far as the rear facing lights go, they are disabled while in forward gear for obvious reasons. You could add a latching relay to the same circuit, bypassing the BCM. You would have to use diodes to prevent backfeeding into the BCM. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWipr5OYXcK1pJM.html

A few observations: Sometimes when I push and hold the cab (off-road) light switch, it does not activate. Also sometimes when I push it, it does not deactivate. I have the most success with on-off when I push and hold BOTH fog/cab switches at the same time. In some cases, the only way for me to turn the cab lights off is when I cycle the headlight switch to off. Bizarre! Any suggestions and again, sorry to bother. Great work you do!
