Love the way Glenn paces his speech. He's not in a hurry to spit out a bunch of stuff just to hear himself talk or impress. He didn't talk over Joe like so many guests (looking at you Neil DeGrasse Tyson). Life is SO much slower out in nature. I wonder if that has something to do with his laconic story-telling.

I've read a lot of blogs of through hikers on the Appalachian Trail. One guy in particular that hiked the whole thing experienced weeks of weeks of famine. During one long stretch of the grind, he started getting weak so he stumbled into a buffet restaurant somewhere along the trail and he gorged himself for hours. After eating several pounds of food, he ate a gallon of ice cream for dessert. He checked into a motel for the night and ended up sleeping for 36 hours. The motel staff knew he was a hiker so they just let him sleep.(the motel had many snoring hikers in it at the time). This is just one story out of hundreds of hikers going weeks without enough calories and eventually overeating to the point of it potentially threatening their health.

Yes, they learned about overfeeding starving peope in WW2. I got edema in my legs in 2017. Dunno why. Doctor thinks it was from switching Drugs. My legs swelled with water retention & weeped pink fluid. One leg went totally red and I almost passed out from the pain. Spent 9 days in the hospital. Had to elevate legs. It is a common affliction from diabetes. Severe Edema can be treated with furosemide (Lasix).

I believe (if I'm not mistaken), refeeding edema is caused by a phosphorus spike when you start eating again. As far as I know it the high levels can cause heart failure. Scary, especially being by yourself.

"Edema"is the medical term for swelling. Body parts swell from injury or inflammation. It can affect a small area or the entire body. Medications, pregnancy, infections, and many other medical problems can cause edema. Edema happens when your small blood vessels leak fluid into nearby tissues.

I worked at Meadowlark Lake Lodge in the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming about 15 years ago....400+ acre lake made by the CCC that is stocked with fish and you can get some really good fishing in there.....during the summer. By September it was already starting to freeze over and by late October we (stupidly, I dont need to hear it lol) drove a truck over the lake. Actually, one of my friends like to go out and do donuts and stuff on the ice on the lake in the winter. I personally dont like water all that much....I will go swimming, but not in that lake.....which was why I was up in the mountains at almost 9k ft elevation. I always thought that was reckless, but "to each his own" I guess. No way you could get through that ice to get to the fish. No one ever actually tried despite having trophy sized fish in the lake.

I've never experienced it, but I totally believe that is a thing.... Has anyone else ever been so hungry, that when you finally eat it hits your bloodstream like a drug? I think I was about 30 years old when that happened for the first time. It's a weird feeling to get high on food, but it does happen if you wait long enough. I suppose it's the same feeling as when babies get "milk drunk".
