This guy Glen was always the most legit guy on the show. He's a really cool and interesting human being. I really admire the way he uses very little modern machinery to survive. There are always going to be your basic two types of people. You have your public school/college educated individuals and then you have your people who are educated from life itself. Just experience. They both have their give and takes. But you could easily further break this down. Or expand on what each gains or loses. Such as time vs educational value or what kind of education are you getting vs the time you are spending/losing. Schooling, in my opinion, waists a lot more time than is necessary to get to where you need to be. Given a persons independence and perseverance.

@anthony chacon Definitely not true. Most of the people on Earth, are not looking to move to northern Alaska and live like a hunter gatherer. In modern society life is hell without education. Sure you can pick up a skill like Metal working, Wood working, diving, or get into sports and maybe make it, but all those practical skill based jobs are quickly becoming obsolete because we now have technology that can do the same job more efficiently and faster without needing time off. In the modern world, we are moving into an era where we don't need individuals who can do the job. But the individuals who can repair, create, or research the machinery that can do the job (all of which requires education). The best people are those that have an undergrad degree (at least a bachelors) and work experience, as both go hand in hand. If say, you have a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and 5 years of work experience working for Boeing, you're basically set in life. You'll be earning over 100k USD a year, 1 month a year vacation time + commissions and bonuses. Plus when you are educated you will look for a life partner who is also educated. Say your wife has a Bachelors in Psychology and works as a psychologist with 3-5 years of experience. Your household is bringing in over 250k USD a year. You can mortgage and easily live in a 2 million dollar house and have 1 or 2 100K + luxury cars. And when you have kids, you want them to also be educated and live a full life. Therefore, education and life and work experience all go hand in hand.

I think I should stop before reaching the hallucinogenics required before proceeding point. I would add one additional thing before deciding to jump into the adventures of being that hunter/gathering dude with the 1/2 million dollar net worth by inserting the word "young" right before hunter.

I think that Joe is really unique exception. He's well known now super famous, but it wasn't always that way. I've heard some of his stories where he talks about being broke, feeling like he had no sense of direction. The difference between Joe of your other famous people who came from the bottom is that he has stayed humble and actually has a way of communicating with others, regular people and not so regular people. He's a curious dude just like the majority of us, all of these makes him unique.

I’m from some large sized suburbs in Cleveland area, I’ve never heard of that! Are you in a city area? I know jobs in the city are more scarce due to population density, but out where I am I can get a physical labor job, or minimum wage at fast food/grocery stores, within a week without any experience in it and a Hs diploma. Atleast that’s what I’ve seen ancedotly from friends and when I’ve went and picked up a short term job in my works offseason to stay busy.

Watch the show on Netflix “Life Below Zero”. It’s not all about him but he has a lot of time on the camera and it’s great to see all the different people on the show, the way they live and how they adapted to the conditions of life there.

Glenn was my favorite person to watch on that reality tv show. The guy is truly connected to the wilderness and genuinely loves nature. Being someone who is passionate about being up in the mountains, I can relate to this man and how he connects to his natural surroundings.

This dude is educating JR on what it means to be a REAL wild man

His guy is amazing, he’s what men should be, curious, inspired, self-motivated for both action and learning and brave even in the face of adversity

Blown away by this guy. Never finished 4th grade, got his pilots license, hunts for his own food, lives full time in the bush, does TV now..... No big network would cover the grit, determination, and independence this guy demonstrates. It'd be bad to show today's kids what self reliance can be, that they don't need to be depressed and dependent, and they don't need to follow the crowd. This guy was one of your best guests ever and thanks for this view on life

Glenn was my favorite person on that show because he was always happy and positive about everything he did. With the least amount of support or "things" to aid him. I had similar interests and ended up traveling frequently from Florida to the Brooks Range to bow hunt. He a big inspiration to guys like me who dream of that kind of stuff. I eventually bought a couple of acres in Alaska. Miss you Glenn.

How amazing that this guy didn’t make it past the 4th grade but has been able to thrive off of shit he learned though out his life just from experience. He’s able to survive totally on his own literally in the middle of nowhere. He can also fly airplanes and produce a tv show.

Majority of development is in those years. It boils down to the choice of how hard you're going to develop your mental faculties. Example - deciding you'll learn to love words, always learning new words, therefore allowing your mind to develop furthermore from thinking in sophisticated words

I watch the show regularly and Glenn has always been my favorite.

I could listen to Glenn for an hour...talk about spaghetti. One of Joe's best guests ever. Again, Joe did a great job as a host: he let his guest...do their thing.

Watching this guy's connection with nature in the brooks range makes him a true legend. I lived in Alaska off grid for 10 years in a much easier part of Alaska the kenai peninsula and have so much respect for this guy

This guy is on a different level! I worked construction for 6 months to a year and then layed off for 6 to 8 months or more. I'd save money when working and spend the time off in various mountain ranges. A coworker asked why I went to the mountains and I replied that without pay I didn't see any reason to pay rent and I wanted to see what was on the other side of the mountain. He said it was another mountain! I said great, I have another place to go! I loved the time away from it all but it did get lonely.

@kinghazy625 depends on where I was, I panned for gold, so I'd start in a tent looking for an area of interest. When I found one, I would build a primitive shelter because it was more comfortable and saved wear and tear on my tent.

@kinghazy625 trust me, if you can stand the weather and can be comfortable with yourself or just one person, it's the greatest therapy that you can get, and it's free! I never had expectations of getting rich with the mining, but after about 6 years of it, I sold the gold I had collected and came up with about 600.00! If I didn't have an elderly mother to care for, I'd go back, but she's the priority for now

There is nothingn like being alone in the woods at night with your tent set up or shelter and sitting out by a warm fire. Nothing like that feeling. WE are basically accessing the DNA memory of our ancestors in those moments. It gives you a comforting feeling (mostly for men, not as much for modern women)

@usmc 03retired very true. Well said. The longest ive gone is 2 weeks in the Texas wilderness, and its no joke. Its hard. Alexander supertramp was a starry eyed romantic. He had no idea what he was doing.

I hiked the Brooks Range a couple years ago. A 90 mile trip, but felt more like 200 because of the tundra. Got charged by a grizzly and almost got stuck in a mountain pass during a white out. When I got to Anuktuvic at the end of the hike, there was a hotel that opened the kitchen for us and made reindeer burgers and it was the best meal I ever ate.

One of the BEST JRE guest so far. This guy’s experiences are fascinating.

When Glen was hunting/stalking the huge Bull Moose in season 10 of Life Below was the absolute coolest thing I’ve ever seen! This guy is a master of the outdoors and I’m glad Joe knows this! He’s by far the star of Nat Geo’s Life Below for sure! Don’t watch it now that he’s gone! Thanks for interviewing him!

I used to teach in the Canadian arctic. One of the elementary teachers was from Edmonton, but had married a local man. She would teach for 3 years, and then go out and live on the land, in their cabin for 1. Hunting, fishing and trapping. Talking with her about it, she had a damned good life.

I like how you can see him light up when he talks about his experiences. You can tell he's genuinely thrilled with the life he lives.

Such a nice interesting story, could listen to Glenn for hours. I think he’s lived the fantasy so to speak of many. To be able to live in this manner has always been appealing although reality never thought I could ever do it! Kudos to him for living the way he wanted!

Out of ALL the folks shown on Life Below Zero, Glen is the most self-sufficient. He's the real deal.

Reggie Rightwing what the fuck are you talking about? I have never heard anything about that and if it was true they wouldn’t put him on the show anymore. There’s no way he beats his wife if he did the producers would know and they would cancel him

My Grandpa spent the last 25 years of his life living like this in Northern Canada. He didn't hunt but he did fish and forage. He would go to town once a month, had a girlfriend. But he essentially lived off the land. He had no electricity, no gas/propane, NO modern conveniences except for his old Ford pick up. He had a well (hole in the ground), a wood stove and an outhouse. He would pick 50-60 buckets of blueberries every year, freeze some and sold the rest "in town" (100 kms away) .

This man is truly amazing.

Glen was by far the most organic person on LBZ

Glenn's scenes were by far my favourite part of the show.

I agree... And the man knew how to think ahead. He has a separate living space in case one gets smashed up by a bear. I wanted to try to build one of those shelters after seeing his.

I was stationed in JBER a decade ago when I was 18. The people there always say that theres only 2 seasons in Alaska: Winter time and Construction time. 😂😂😂

I love watching him on TV and felt 100% inspired by him, love below zero, mountain man, Ice road truckers, bering sea gold, survivor man. All those shows inspire me to live in nature. Buying a van soon and going to retire living van life. I'm sure

Almost fell off my chair when he said Vermont as I watch this in Vermont educationed himself like they in the 1800s a lot of life lessons and reading

My Favorite Movie growing up was Jeremiah Johnson. I always wanted to do what he did, but never had the balls. This guy is the true life embodiment of our past relatives The Mountain men, that is the real American spirit. Free to make their own way. I love these interviews with Glen. I see why you seem to admire him. I do as well.

I moved from a town of about 10,000 people to a super small town of about 200. I live in the middle of nowhere and if I didn't have to work, I would be outside 24/7. I never thought I would love nature this much, but I do, and I 100% understand why Glenn would enjoy it.

He's so natural. I liked his segments on the show.

Its kinda amazing when you see someone who has found the peace that everyone searches for and he has nothing material. Lucky man

Glenn seems like a really good cool dude. I knew that he was because I watch "Life Below Zero" regularly, but it's really interesting to hear him in this environment.

Glen has been a hero of mine for ten years. True badass.

use to love watching this show, his story is so inspiring to negotiate all this without even having a high school or college degree. He said quit school in 4th grade lol.

Education back ground doesn't really matter for alot of people in the world even in the working world , I can't remember the last job I had where they wanted to know what school and what grades I got , obviously other careers will require this but alot don't

This dude is living an amazing life

This guy is crazy but so inspiring. I am NO WHERE near this guys level of experience in life in general lol and definitly not somewhat primitive survival but anyone with anxiety should try out learning self defence (hand to hand or with a weapon), primitive survival skills, learning how to handle firearms and to shoot a bit, hiking, living off the land for food or even just going out camping a bit with friends or alone with supplies. You don't need to go hardcore like this guy and even just doing one of these things is very rewarding and calming for the soul and you feel independent.

This was one of my favorite podcasts ever of JRE and after watching Into The Wild, so fascinating to come back here and listen

I would never discount the benefits of formal education but at the same time you can't argue the intelligence of this person. Listening to him speak and his experiences is so amazing. Very smart person.

They look so similar!! I had to check Glenn's IMDB page to be sure they weren't the same guy, and I'm still not convinced.

This guy needs to make a youtube channel. What a crazy story, just puts his mind to something and does it.

Loved that show and he by far was the most interesting scenario. He was so intelligent and sure of everything he did, plus was able to teach the audience while he was doing it. Wilderness brilliance at its finest.

Would love to see what all the people from that show are doing now.have watched them all and i still watch the re-runs.great show👍

This guy tells stories and I’m enamored like a child. Amazing.

LBZ is one of my favorite shows on tv. I really miss Glenn being on tgere. He was fascinating to watch. So calm, real and focused all of the time. I could NEVER EVER live like they do on the show. They all truly amaze me in Alaska. Especially the ones that live in the bush and totally live off of the land. Very cool!

I can see Mt.Mansfield on my way to work everyday. Just thinking about little Glenn looking up at the same mountain, gives me goosebumps.

For somebody with so little formal education this man is very well spoken and seemingly intelligent. If he had not mentioned that bit about education I never would have guessed it!
