GIMP Tutorial - Removing an Object from an Image
In this GIMP tutorial I show you the basics of how to remove an object from an image and replace it with a background. An overview of the steps:
1. Copy-paste a bunch of new layers from the background using the Free Select tool
2. Add layer masks to get rid of hard edges
3. Combine all the layers with Layer from Visible
4. Use the Smudge tool to blur any remaining hard edges
Tip: Use the Layer Transform Flip Horizontal effect to make things like background trees seem different. You can tell a bad photoshop by repetition, so try to get rid of repetitive elements!

This is a great tutorial. I quickly learned what I needed to and was able to apply it to my own photo. Ten years after you posted this tutorial, Aubrey, it's still helping people.
This was actually a really nice tutorial! No unneeded commentary, no annoying intro. Just straight to the point and really good! Thanks!
Good tutorial on removing unwanted artifacts from images. Right amount of detail of the process, the steps involved. It was very helpful to learn about things to get right the first time & things that can be corrected later. I'm glad you didn't edit out your mistake (selecting when wrong layer was highlighted). It helped me realize what had happened when I made the same mistake.
So very helpful. Clear and concise. Great technique, too. An excellent way to do composite images. So glad to learn this trick. Thanks.
There is also the resyntheziser or GMIC plugins for removing objects.
Like your easy going style of explaining while you work along, nice tut!
Thank you for the video! I've never used GIMP before so was completely lost on how to even start, thank you for explaining it in a simple way! :D
Thanks Aubrey, great tutorial , great channel, beautiful voice which makes listening a whole lot easier, so in summary you have another student now, lots of love from Australia.

Thanks for the tip! Saved me a good photo from a photobomber!
Thank you :)
how to open this tool option?
I am having trouble I have figured out how to select an object. But I can't figure out how to stop the lines from still being there when I need to stop and copy and paste the object. The line never goes away for some reason. Any where I move my mouse the line is still there.
