Gimp Background Remove from an image with fine detail
Remove the background from an image in GIMP
In this GIMP tutorial I will show a techniques to remove the background from an image with fine detail.
Using a layer mask to acheive this effect in GIMP is not hard if you follow the basic steps in this video.

It can be problematic trying to reproduce the moves in a KZread tutorial, that's why I make PDF files on all my videos.
The PDF tutorial for the steps required on removing the background from the bridge can be found at this address.

I had someone ask how to do it with fine hair. The steps are the same but the PDF file is a lot clearer.

Thanks for the kind comment. No I did not create Gimp. I'm a tutor at a seniors' computer club. Each week I give a lesson on using Gimp. Some I make a KZread video. While most of the lessons have all ready had KZread tutorials by others I try to cover some that have not been covered.
Seven years later this is still the sane way to accomplich this task. Thank you Tom.
I come back to your tutorials often because they are clear and concise! Thank you!
Old video, and probably ancient version of GIMP, but one can always learn something. I've seen this done before, but as you say, not all videos describe the steps fully. Your description is very clear. Thank you.
All I can say Tom is thank you! I absolutely 'get' GIMP and use it a lot, but had always battled to understand layer masking. I watched countless videos, but always got muddled and lost. Yesterday I watched this vid of yours and ... for some reason what you explained, and how you explained it, set off a light bulb in my head. Again my sincere thanks. Nick
You are the BEST! I had this tutorial saved and I needed it again, I tried another one, but nobody is a good as you. Thank you Tom for teaching us! :)
Thanks for your video. I watched it years ago when I first started using GIMP and before I had a KZread account. I have never forgotten it. Well Done!
Excellent! Solved the problem I had with pasting backgrounds. Thanks, much more simple than many of the other guys babbling and changing minds here and there making things confusing. Nice step by step, wrote them down, excellent procedure. ;-)
Learned TONS in the 6 mins. Thanks for making this tutorial!
Nice tutorial Tom, Thnx, Also never knew about the hold shift to paint a straight line...
Thank you so much this is the best tutorial ever! FINALLY I get it! Subscribed! And you are beyond awesome for providing a pdf file of the instructions too, wow.
Thats indeed the easiest and fastest way to do that with Layer Masks ! Thanks a lot ..worked perfect doing it paralell to the tutorial. :-)
Hi Tom , this is by far the best video on masking and background removal . Thank you soooooooooo much .
Ive been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out but thanks to your tutorial on how to do it I was finally able to finish my project. And I watched a ton of videos already that didnt help. Thank you Sir! :-)
I went to your website and downloaded the pdf file . So generous of you . Thanks again .
Mike Scholz thank for subscribing to my channel. The comments on removing a background with fine detail is most welcome. I had a challenge from an acquaintance to do the same thing with hair.
..I have used GIMP for 3yrs now, and every little bit helps...but it always seems that everyone uses this tool like a 'photoshop' extention, and I have yet to see 'original compositions' utilizing most of what GIMP has to offer. I am a member of their registry, and that helps, but photos and original art are two different things. Thank you so much for your input.
Thanks - Much easier to understand & do than others. Also, like your other tutorials as well.
I'm so happy because I found this in pdf formats. Thank you for makeing them.I know, You work hard and you share them. I have no words...maybe sound limited....but...Thank you, sir!

Thanks i search tutos for masking in thegimp, i only found many for Photoshop
thank you for this !!
Thank you, this will help with my Lighthouse image... there’s a complex rail on it, I tried masking the sky, and ended up in fringeville...
A Very well-executed tutorial! I did notice one mistake though (I've been making graphics and touching photos for quite a while): the water did not reflect the replaced sky. There are a few tutorials for that fix as well, but other than that, a wonderful job!
Thank you!
Great tutorial. Easy to follow, just what I was looking for. Thank you.

Thanks for the comment on my youtube video tutorial. The tutorial is quite old but every thing still applies. The only thing with the latest Gimp is you Export your image instead of Save.
