GIMP Tutorial: 5 Things You Didn't Know GIMP Could Do

In this tutorial, I'll show you 5 awesome things you didn't know GIMP could do - including hidden features for commonly used tools, and some useful ways to enhance your workflow.
I'll show you how to use the NEW Unified Transform tool (found in GIMP 2.10), how to use the Transform Lock feature, how to access hidden features in the bucket fill and eraser tools, and how to turn your Clone Tool into an "undo-history brush!"

Even if you are a pro, why would you give up control over your own work to another company? Use software that lets you retain the ability to do what you like with your own work.

My favourite new Gimp ability is rarely used by anyone; the ability to adjust the opacity of the adjustment preview so that you can see what's underneath before finalizing. So for example, with the scale/perspective/etc... to fit the moose into the screen, you could adjust the preview transparency to see the screen beneath in order to know when to stop adjusting.

For the history issue - before I start I always duplicate my base image and then just hide it - I can always then copy and paste a section off the original if I need to "revert" a section of the image. Same thing, just prepping for the worst before it invariably happens :D. Very helpful video! Thanks :)

Thanks for sharing the tip! That's usually a good habit to get into - especially when you know you're making changes to the base image. The good news is GIMP is adding auto-save on crashes in 2.10 and also adding adjustment layers in 3.2 - so they are making strides for saving work and non-destructive editing. Thanks for watching!

I've always imported the original image in as a new layer & then cloned from that if i need to rectify something but that only works if the work piece is the same size, going back through the history n exporting will allow any editing/resizing to be the same 👍

THESE are AWESOME & possibly too advanced for many users but they're fun to play with & each filter has it's own additional adjustments but beware, once you see these & start using them, time could become an issue because there are so many filters & variations of each that you may not be able to decide which to use for your specific project needs. Hope those who download them enjoy!

Not usually - if you download GIMP 2.10.0-RC1 it should show up on your computer as GIMP 2.10. If you are on Windows, just use the search feature next to the start menu and type "GIMP." It should show up there. If on a Mac, go to your Applications section and it should be there. If you are still having issues, let me know.

  • @ironmantooltime

Rather than wondering if you can afford it, think about the real cost as rate of return on your investment. If you're not a commercial photographer then your return in paying for photoshop is likely zero. Whereas if you're a dad maybe spending ten dollars a month on your kid's classes is a better investment. Gimp having zero cost means you're not losing anything. Why pay money for zero rate of return? This is relevant for Ps as its a subscription and so a perpetual liability and not a one off cost which you could justify as a one and done fun time. A lifetime liability with no compensation is imho impossible to justify, when there are good free alternatives. Its like Office 365 for personal use: selling commercial licensing to consumer markets, why?

You may just need to right click on the image layer and click on the "Add Alpha Channel" option near the bottom. That adds transparency to the image. If you want to save the final image with the transparency, then you need to save it as a PNG as JPEGs don't contain transparency.

Mr. Davies you look like a combination of Henry Cavill and Funhaus's James Willems. Believe me, that's mostly a complement.
