Introduction to Layers in GIMP
Experience a crash course in using layers in GIMP! This tutorial is a broad overview of layer uses, including how to add multiple images to a project, arrange them in the layer stack, and change the layer opacity.
Go ahead and grab your copy of GIMP here: www.gimp.org/
This is the fourth video of my new tutorial series, "GIMP Basics," where I will show you a range of rudimentary photo-editing processes using the free, open source Gnu Image Manipulation Program (or simply the "GIMP.")
Any comments are very welcome! Yesterday was my birthday, so any happy wishes are very, very welcome! Love you all!

Thinking of updating this tutorial for the current version of GIMP. Anyone interested?
Finally, a gimp tutorial that I can understand. Moves fast but not too fast, clear explanations, lots of examples, and best of all, Bob the smile. I will check out your other videos later.
I'm a 14year old guy, learning GIMP layers currently in school! Good to see how GIMP changed drastically in these 11 years!!! Btw thanks for this tutorial video :)
Thanks Benjamin. I'm a TOTAL beginner and actually think I started to understand something. Have a happy day.
I've watched quite a few tutorials in my effort to learn Gimp. You are one of the best "teachers" I've seen so far! I actually can follow your instruction! Thanks!
This is the best tutorial by FAR. I wanted to be able to rough sketch lines and overlay them with smooth edges and thanks to this simple tutorial I can do that and even more! I have no idea who this guy is but he was awesome. Thanks!
When my coach suggested that I use Gimp and I took a look at some of the lessons I was flabbergasted. I went back to my coach and said, "Really? How can I ever do that?" Well, watching these tutorials has waylaid my fears!" Thanks.
I'm just learning Gimp and am incredibly grateful for your tutorials! Fine work.

Frank Stone: Your video was uploaded on Jan. 24, 2011. If that is your birthday, if that is your birthdate (minus the year, of course), we share the same birthday. I'm creating something and putting text to it but, can't get it to write beyond the boundaries of my first layer.
So far the most concise and understandable tutorial for a newbie like me! Thanks! Oh and Happy (belated) birthday too! :)
Happy birthday, loved the tutorial! 🎉
Happy Birthday... Another clear concise video on using gimp, I wish others would actually use Gimp b4 making tutorials about it!!!

Thank YOU for a prompt answer :D and for the advice, I forgot about using the contrast to make the scanned picture lighter so I can redraw my picture on to the background. Very useful :3

Happy Birthday my friend, good video......
Very good presentstion. Happy birthday!
Thanks mate, happy birthday!
Totally! You should be able to right-click on the layer and choose to add a layer mask. If you have something lassoed, you can choose to use Selection = great way to quickly mask something. Alternatively, go to the menu Layers>Mask>Add Layer Mask
THANKS FOR the tutorial!! and happy belated birthday :))
Excellent and easy to understand, thank you!
Happy birthday !!!

Happy Birthday.. I enjoyed your tutorial Benjamin.. It's interesting and I don't know how to do them, so looking to glean what I can from you..
Belated birthday greetings, Benjamin. I found your tutorial really useful. Thank you and well done! The one thing that would have thrown me originally was not knowing that the Layers window, if hidden (as mine was) could be accessed through the Windows sub-menu.
Happy Birthday.
Happy Birthday! Even though I'm a tad late. Thank you for the awesome tutorial, I will be watching again and trying to follow along... I LOVE taking pictures but to take it to a new level seems I need to become computer literate. THANK YOU!
Happy Birthday...liked your tutorial...do more plz.

Very nice job! Thank You for clear to the point lesson. I am new to Gimp but loving it so far. Just tired of the mounting cost/subscriptions to PhotoShop that I loved before but I am DONE with that. Thank You for your tutorials!!!

HAPPY !BIRTHDAY
Thank You for this wonderful tutorial.I had been breaking my head trying to understand Layers and your video resolved it ! A very belated Birthday wished BTW ! :-) I am gonna search for more of your videos now. - Linda Enian
Hey mate! Just wanted to say, that it is a very good video, and in contradiction with most 'tutorials' this one is actually useful. I like the way the topic is build up, im a total n00b on image-editing, and GIMP seemed pretty abstract, if the only thing you ever used is 'paint'. Thanks for constructive way of explaining it to us!
Happy birthday man
@Krowe2020 You're welcome! And thanks for the kind words. I really need to get back into creating tutorials.
Happy birthday.
Happy birfdayyyy!
Thank you for a good tutorial. Just starting on GIMP.

Excellent teacher......Thanks much
Happy Belated Birthday
happy very very late birthday........... thank you for your video
Excellent instruction for layering in GIMP.
belated birthday wishes ben
hpy brthdy br!
Always make sure to Save-as and use layers so as not to mess up the original. First, change your image from greyscale to color, by going to Image>Mode>RGB. You can also use Levels or Curves to increase the contrast/get rid of light grey defects (by raising the steepness to white,) and deepen the blacks so the line drawing shows (by bringing in the slope to black.) Then you can use Color to Alpha and select white.
Happy Birthday
Thanks Benjamin from england. You have friendly manner :o)
thank you for your efforts, this was very helpful :)
Nice video, well explained. belated greetings
That was great!
@lindaenian You're very welcome! I'm glad my tutorial helped. Thank you! My next birthday is almost here. Well, I'd better make some new videos then, shouldn't I? ;)
Gotcha. ;) I need to get used to PS myself. Own it now, gotta learn it.
Happy belated Bday! Liked the video very much and I wish most of the tutorials were as clear and as informative as yours. Many of the begiiner videos move too fast as if they are going to put out a fire. Yours move at the right pace for beginners. Thank you!
thank you for the very clear explanation
