getting creative burnout.

A bit of an explanation. And also, a plan going forward.

this video is what this entire year has felt like, I've lost joy in so many of the things I used to love and I haven't yet been able to develop a healthy schedule in a while so I've come to a point where when I get motivated I forget to exist as a functioning person for weeks on end and the rest of the time I'm so unmotivated I can't exist as a functioning person for weeks on end. It's kind of inspiring to see someone make some positive changes! looking forward to more spontaneous videos!

Exactly, because normal life hasn't been progressing. Everyone's put energy into adjusting but its become surprisingly difficult to fall back into old habits and hobbies. This entire year put life on standstill and it's annoying as hell, especially with so many schools rushing students into exams.

Galatea, every type of video you make is a video I'll watch. Your channel is one of my favourites here on youtube (maybe even my favourite). For me, it doesn't matter if the video is scripted or not, I simply love hearing you talk and getting to see your thought process. So keep going, make whatever content that makes you truly happy, we'll watch and enjoy it nonetheless. Is your personality that I like, it shines through in every video. I'm very much excited about this every wednesday video. Good luck and enjoy the process! (Recommendation: I think I'd like to see a video like the one you made in 2018 for the books you had read in that year, but this time for 2020)

I sympathise with what you're going through. I write for a living, and for the first year my strategy was the same one I'd always had. Sit in a chair pale, shaking and sweaty until it's done, and it just wasn't sustainable when you roughly need to get 500-2000 words out a day. And I rarely like anything I do, or more precisely I rarely think anything I do is finished. Even for all the praise, compliments and feedback. Not humble bragging, just trying to prove the point that we are the best and worst judges of our own work. I really appreciate your channel, and though the advice is always the same and feels kinda blah. I encourage you to make a schedule that works long term, I still get to a point where I need to push, but it's the exception, and I have fuel in the tank when I need to. Next isn't so easy, but find the difference between something being finished and something that could be better. I have tons of stuff that could be better, but it's all finished, and I took my lessons into the next project. I still find this hard to admit to myself but I improve much faster finishing things than I do having an existential crisis about sentence structure and how a word falls. It can feel to me like I'm sucking all the art out of it, but in truth I'm really not. I am writing in spite of the panic, chaos and self loathing not because of it. Anyway like I said channel is brilliant and glad your uploading again, take care of yourself.

Oh Galatea, I feel ya! I've been trying to write my novel over this current crisis (unexpected time off as no one needs corporate videos editing), and it's difficult to set a schedule to get things done and maintain balance. One thing I've found that's helped is setting timers for stuff. I also generally do all of the 'normal life' things (washing, cleaning, running, etc) in the morning, so the afternoon can be spent doing the creative stuff. I also have fairly strict bedtimes so I don't fall into the habit of staying up for 20+ hours. Thinking about suggestions for topics, give us the small stuff ( it doesn't have to be long-form), or create a long-form video that amalgamates several of these smaller topics (title cards to split them up, etc)? The trio of witches video was very well done, and very enjoyable, so go where the Muse takes you!

I feel ya girl. Creative endeavors stress me out too, probably because I feel they reflect on my own person and therefore I fear anyone who sees it will judge me for it and therefore it has to be perfect. It takes a big deal of self distancing to let go of that and just create. As for topic suggestions you've emntioned in the past that you didn't like Dune, which is probably among my favorite media of all time, so I'd appreciate the extended rant on that.

  • @theauthenticobserver

Yeah I think being able to distance the personal from the creative in that way is essential, though it is very tricky to do. Your content is a treasure. I was personally happy to see one video once every few months, knowing you're living your life and youtube is just something on the side you really want to do so you can share an opinion about something. I understand the part where you burn out where a hobby turns into a "job" except it's not paying for the time you spend into it. My advice is dont make it a job! Do only what you wanna do, not what others want from you. You're doing a good thing to eliminate the things that frustrate you and depress you, simplifying things is the best road! Loved your scripted videos but i think you are the same person with or without scripting, so they're all enjoyable to watch :D That said i need to say something - Not all cultures in the world celebrate Helloween. This is an overhyped theme/holiday and while i like the aestetic, it's not something i enjoy just one brief period of the entire year. Give me a video about witches any day and i'll watch it! lol Also make a fundme or patreon or something to help you hire people to help edit or whatever if it's all too stressful!

Nothing like a good computer crash to suck all your motivation away, along with your enjoyment. Creativity and timing are hard to deal with. It wasn't exactly creative burnout, but last year I was working two jobs and it totally crashed my motivation. When I had free time I didn't want to do anything creative. Now I'm a trucker and actually spend more total hours working, but am much less stressed out and my creative productivity has been ramping up steadily.

Let me say the unpleasant truth: motivation, as all emotions, is volatile and not reliable. One that rely on motivation to accomplish an achievement probably will never do it. You are very intelligent and funny, i watched some of your old content and i really think you've got something. Keep going, and take your time to relax, to avoid burnouts, but remember that nobody can rely on feel motivated in order to accomplish their goes. Rather, it's better to rely on discipline, which means: do whatever you know you have to do, at the time you have to do, in order to accomplish that achievement that you are aiming to. When it is time to relax, just relax no matter what and when it is time to work on your channel, if you really wants it, work on your channel, despite your motivations. This is discipline, that's the key. Hope it helps you, as it is helping me. ;)

Know that feeling all too well. Having on your mind "I should do this, upload that" can take a very high toll on your mental health. In my experience it helped to let go of the "I should". Youre doing these amazing videos not only for the audience but also for yourself, because these are things you want to express. If there isnt anything new where you say "i really WANT to talk about that" then you can use the time to relax. Do other things that you actually WANT. Paint, read, make a nice dinner or go for a walk and dont even think about the videos or youtube. The motivation will return in no time. Kikis delivery service had a similiar topic in the movie, "The Take" did an analysis of it, if that interests you. :) Take as much time as you need, your audience will be there, no matter when you upload.

Galatea, I've been a silent watcher for a long time, but to be honest your channel is among ones that I enjoy the most. Your videos are entertaining no matter if they are scripted or not. And I guess many people who wach your channel are still here because of your personality and because they like to listen to your perspective. Ach, haha, that thought about making everything polished. I felt attacked on a personal level the moment you said it. I do the same in my own area, and honestly I feel this is a number one thing that stops me from actually growing and getting better. Analysing is great, but not when it becomes compulsive. You get tangled in tiny tiny details that you stop looking at the full picture and the whole process becomes exhausting rather than challenging. Especially when you complicate things that should not be complicated, but rather just done. :) I feel things that happen spontaneous or that are said in such way might quite give a birth to more profound thought. (Sound illogical, but oh well) I think it would be interesting to hear about illustration/drawing/creative work and how have you grown to enjoy it or just your thoughts about it. Favourite poetry of yours maybe, haha, I just want to get into it, but feel overwhelmed, suggestion would be cool. Anyway, that was a huge rant. Take care and don't stress yourself. :) Take your time to find what you enjoy doing again - it might be a long process, but it worth it in the end.

It did make it on time, but I think I'd given myself only a few days to script it, make the set, film, and have it edited. Even with help, I had no idea how long it would actually take, so I didn't give myself enough time to do it without an overwhelming amount stress. In the end, hardly anyone even saw it, and I haven't made a video for the channel since. I decided that with my music (main) channel and the ASMR channel, I'm only going to upload when I'm inspired to do so. No more schedules. No more over-stressing. My content seems to always be better when it's not under pressure anyway.

I can understand what you have been going through as far as having a form of intellectual burnout. I have been a bartender for 5 years as of late and have had times where I felt I need to change my entire career due to a lack of innovation and interest on my part. I will tell you what helped me was cutting out time to be in public (i.e. creating time to relax and be social). This can range from being in the park just sitting or going out to a bar. Remember that feeling overwhelmed is normal but also that being human is not a solitary experience. Knowing that and expressing how you feel will keep you on balance I know it.

Sorry if this comes across wrong, but honestly as a viewer, I don't care what you talk about. I don't care what the video looks like. I watch your videos because of how passionate you are. I like watching you talk about things you love, and why some books are horrible. I care about you being happy and healthy. Please don't create for my benefit. I will still be here if you make videos in you pjs, with no makeup. Be healthy and happy.

A suggestion; your thoughts on ‘historical’ **fiction** writers like Philippa Gregory, & the issues that surrounds their works... please & thank you! I very much hope your new plans work in your favour- though I *loved* your TMI series- it saved me a ton of money, in not buying that series - maybe, at some point in the future (we all need time to centre ourselves- there are moments I _still_ castigate myself for being ‘lazy’, but stepping back from my writing for a hot minute was what I needed to do) you can do a similar series, but there’s nothing wrong with trying something new, or stepping back a little. Whatever you need to do. 🌪🌊🌬🌥🌈✨😊

I would enjoy the continuation. . .. you're on to something there. But. . .it is what it is. Perhaps there is something more to come for you on this tale. You could always go 3 years later, for a 6 year spread. Or 9. Take it in stride 😁 thanks for the knowledgeable breakdowns. Cheers 🥂✌️❤️🙏 Edit: the standard one holds oneself to is, as always, self imposed. You shouldn't feel the arbitrary bar set by others is a containment of your depth. It is merely the average expectancy. But you surpass more than subverse in that. In my humble opinion anyway 🙂❤️

think how much work this took and then what we see as good content ... it's astounding how people can keep doing it for as long as they do ... just for a few minutes of entertainment. is that good? isn't that like a bad balance to demand on others or ourselves (unless we absolutely do it out of joy) and think it's free? there's a cost there even if we don't know it, emotional, karmic, balance of the world.

I feel the heavy deadlines are a big part of burnout. You put a lot of work into really grand videos and that takes a lot of perseverance if you don’t want to do, or your done with it. I think chiller videos that are shorter and require less editing would be good. Though you have a habit of being a workaholic on a lot of things: the Cassandra Clare series.

Seven hours of footage?? My god, how are you still alive? Sounds brutal. It sounds like you’d most benefit from having your scripts edited. Artists have a hard time trimming their content down since they love it all. Editing the script means less editing the video (which is the most time consuming for me anyway). But I think your unscripted content is fantastic anyway. Nobody minds a few pauses.

You could maybe do a video about Harry Potter, in the same way you did the mortal instruments. I'd also love to hear your opinions on Writers (Like J.K Rowling and Cassandra Clare) who seem to have resorted to only using LGBTQ+ as a way to get liked. I think Cassandra Clare was genuine as first with having gay characters in her first few books (Which I love) but now she seems to only be adding them as token characters. The whole tone is different. Same with J.K Rowling who is just....yikes. Anyways I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I don't know if I mentioned it during your last update, but don't worry about us. I think I speak for a significant ammount of the audience when I say a lot of people want you to enjoy your creative process above all else. I find that your videos are quite unique because there's not a lot of people doing this type of content and you also have a good presence in your videos. Please, please, please don't push yourself beyond what you can do since like you said, this isn't your full-time job (for my part at least I don't feel like you owe us videos, I enjoy your work as it is). I doubt you'll answer this comment but regarding the sense that you're doing this all by yourself, would you be interested in getting a discord server or some other alternative method for people to talk to you/suggest/work with you? P.S right now I'm getting started on a novel called "A Fool on the Hill" by Matt Ruff. It's quite fun but I'm not sure if the subject matter falls in line with your preferred genre of books.
