Getting a Pet Sloth | What You Need to Know

-----------
Welcome to MASpets! A channel dedicated to providing high quality information about exotic, alternative, and unique pets, as well as traditional ones. This channel supports the freedom of pet owners to care for the species of their choice as long as that animal has been shown to thrive in human care under the right conditions. We strongly believe that facts and education, not admonition, is the best policy for encouraging potential pet keepers to choose the best pet for their living situation. We believe there is no such thing as a ‘good pet’, and do not promote any particular species as pets, however we understand that the desire of some to own something different is essential to their expression and existence as an individual. Whether you are considering a pet, or are just interested in the subject, this channel invites you to become informed about the exciting world of animal diversity.
There are hundreds of species of exotic pets! Some examples include: fennec fox, porcupine, serval, wallaby, boa constrictor, rainbow crab, bush baby, zebra, squirrels, ostrich, kinkajou, macaws, springhare, lemur, leopard gecko, tarantula, capybara, sloth, owl, cockatoo, muntjac deer, lion, short-tailed opossum, raccoon, scorpion, green iguana, and more.
Domesticated exotic pets include: camels, alpaca, reindeer, zebra finch, pot-bellied pig, hedgehog, domestic rats, hamster, gerbil, goldfish, guinea fowl, Bengal cat, peacock, fainting goats, and sugar gliders.
We post introductory videos to animals that can be kept as pets, care tips, address controversies, legal issues, and more. Please see the posted links for more information about this subject!

Also, I see a lot of hate on the exotic pet community. Keeping exotic pets is not wrong unless you do not give them the strict care they need. As like all animals, it is only bad if you neglect them. The exotic pet community is also not bad when you purchase animals from breeders. Ones from the wild threatens he species and should not be encouraged

Ok this is from a year ago. I’ve hoped you have changed if so please delete this comment but if not I don’t like it when people who don’t know anything try to act like they know more than expirienced keepers. The more i learn i see as these animals are fragile emotionally especially the 3 toed but there diet is the main obstacle its not that you cant get leaves cecropia and others are here in Florida they have them it takes years for them to mature if you plant though. The issue is the specific combination of the exact species the mother ate while carrying the infant, that's a big part of what the Mom does for 6 months while baby is hanging on there belly, they show them what and where to eat. However now in Suriname and French Guiana they have this leaf supplement looks like spinach, if it works id like to have -No id love to have a Brown or Pale throated sloth they are so sweet!

Dogs have been bred to be easier to care for so most people can have them. And yet so many people are still treating them wrong buying unhealthy food and such. But why should you restrict a dedicated owner from owning a sloth. There needs to be species ambassadors and we must know how to care for them in captivity. If you do your research and have what it takes they can be rewarding pets

Even if it is possible to own a sloth, please don’t do it. These timid little animals get stressed out so easily, especially around human contact. and their native habitat is the best place for them. They do not show outward signs of stress and one of them is being very still or looking though they are falling asleep. If you truly want a chance to interact with sloth consider volunteering at a rescue facility that deals with orphaned or injured sloths.

I don't know if this video is a joke, but SLOTHS ARE NOT PETS! If you want to question this, there are videos by animal sanctuaries that will explain why they are NOT to be kept as pets. There are so many furry adorable animals to get, don't be selfish and ignorant about this. Professionals in sanctuaries have hard time keeping these creatures alive while being rehabilitated.

In other words the young struggle health wise but if they get past 2 years old is it easier ? I believe the only success is to have them from babies two toeds are to aggressive to get an adult. Is Florida humid enough , lol I cant believe im asking that question. Thanks!

No, no, no, NO. Do not get a pet sloth. Wild animals make very poor pets. Before you even consider any exotic animal, you need to ask the following questions. Do you already have a vet within a 45-minute drive of your house lined up who is willing to treat your sloth? If not, is your regular vet willing to put in the extra time after work to study how to treat it? If the answer to this is no, then you cannot have a pet sloth. Most vets will refuse to treat an exotic animal even if it is dying. Sloths have extremely particular digestive systems, and they generally don’t display illness until they are very sick indeed. “Are you willing to go without vacation for as long as the sloth lives? If you get a permit, your permit will only cover you and the address of your home. You cannot get a pet-sitter. There are no boarding facilities for sloths. The zoo will not take it while you go on vacation. You cannot take it with you, because your permit only covers where you live, not anywhere else. If you cross state lines with it, your permit will no longer cover you, and the sloth will be confiscated. What will you do if you get sick or hurt? Your permit only covers you. If the authorities discover that you are no longer in control of your sloth, they will confiscate it, they will have no idea of what it needs, and it will probably die because they tried to feed it dog food. Your sloth will need a temperature of 85-plus degrees F and humidity of 80 percent. Are you willing to raise your home temperature to that? Are you aware of what that high a humidity will do to your furniture, carpet, and books? The sloth needs these conditions to be healthy; it is a rainforest animal. Your sloth will need a huge enclosure. And it will poop all over the enclosure. You cannot housebreak a sloth. This means you will be cleaning up sloth poop several times a day. In 85 degree heat and 80 percent humidity. Imagine what your house, your clothing, and you are going to smell like. Do you know you will have to make several small batches of fresh food every day for it? Sloths are browsers; they don’t eat one big meal. You cannot get Purina sloth chow at Walmart. Most of what you buy will not come from the grocery store (and no, the sloth cannot eat the leaves on your trees). This will be time-consuming and expensive. And lastly, there are very few (if any!) genuine sloth breeders in the U.S. This means that any sloth you get will have a very high probability of being illegally imported. Do you know how baby sloths are taken from the wild? Their mothers are shot dead, and the babies are torn from their backs, and the dead mothers are sold for meat. Do you want a sloth so badly you are willing to be a part of that? Anyone who claims “he has heard” there is a “sloth rescue market” is not telling the truth. Rescued sloths are not shipped out of the country for the pet trade. Rescued sloths are generally cared for by rehabbers and sanctuaries in the area the sloth comes from so they can be released at adulthood into the wild, and people who are not “rehabbers” who have purchased “rescued” sloths are purchasing baby sloths whose mothers have been slaughtered. This same person who is claiming things like “he has heard there are sloth biscuits” that make it easy to feed sloths knows nothing about sloths, and if you challenge him, like Donald Trump, he will defend himself with “well that’s what he heard.” To answer your question, yes, you can get a sloth with a non-transferable permit. But why would you want to, given all that?

Vanessa Torres Ramirez wild animals are just not appropriate to have as pets period Vanessa...there need to be stronger laws to protect wild animals...these videos look cute and all, and make people want to go out and get one, but these animals need to be free in their own sanctuary, whether it is in the wild, or through a sanctuary that helps those in need until they can be released back into the wild....and if they cannot be released, a sanctuary home like a zoo or something where they can be taken care of properly in a habitat created to mimic their natural home....

  • @jennycasady8092

Vanessa Torres Ramirez you cannot get any wild animal to be yours at a zoo or sanctuary...you can give donation money for specific animals in some places, but they do not give people wild animals ever....I went recently to a tiger and lion refuge that tore my heart up....those poor animals will never be able to be released into the wild again because people took them in as cubs and they could never live in the wild again and survive...one of the tigers someone actually let go into the woods of the area that I live, and tigers and lions do not naturally even live in my area....they couldn’t take care of it so they just let it go into the woods....a person could have been killed by them doing that had the refuge not got word right away and were able to find it before it could hurt someone...they also had a poor bear there that someone had raised as a pet, and when the man died none of his family wanted to keep the bear so that bear has to live in a cage for the rest of his life because someone had to selfishly take him in as a pet when he was a baby, instead of taking it to a refuge, zoo, or sanctuary that could have gotten it to where he could be released into the wild again....there were also animals called ligers there that were tiger and lion mixed that someone just decided to cross breed....those poor animals could never be released into the wild because they are not natural to the wild....it is NEVER good or okay to keep wild animals as pets

Vanessa Torres Ramirez the money people pay to take care of it is basically a charity type donation....that gets really expensive to do, but some people that have the money probably do provide the food and stuff for specific animals as a charity donation, and when they do that, a lot of times the zoo will acknowledge it with the name plates

If you care about the well being of sloths, the best thing to do is not watch this video. Advertisers just care that people are watching.

Hi @@Maspets. being a responsible human means making responsible choices like choosing to avoid promoting the capture and death of wild animals for your pleasure and enjoyment. Please do some research prior to buying or having an exotic animal as a pet. It isn't worth the damage that is done to wild populations to own one

Poaching isn’t keeping an exotic animal as a pet, it’s using them for purposes that are wrong or for profit, and it is only poaching if you kill them

and by promoting the keeping of these animals, it promotes poaching as it creates a demand. by creating a demand, it promotes poachers to continue poaching these animals
