Having 1 raccoon in the house is like having 3, 5 year olds on crystal meth. They are MUCH stronger and more destructive than you can imagine. Scratches and biting is normal.

I had a raccoon as a kid. He slept in my motorcycle helmet until he was bottle weaned. After that he wasn't allowed in the house unless under direct supervision however he was never caged and ran free outside and would come running out of the woods when called. His name was Baretta and he loved riding my motorcycle with me and I took him almost everywhere I went. He loved the ocean at O.C. Maryland and never hurt anyone bad enough for medical treatment. He was my best friend and pet I ever had. This was about 45 years ago and I still miss him.

Give it food(not from hand), don't actively watch it eat. It's preferable if you are around when you feed it, so they know who to trust. Make sure you make it a routine as well. Eventually, (varying on the how the area treats raccoons) one will gradually begin to trust you. Starting with a baby is the best option, but as the video says replacing the mother is complicated.
When I was a kid, we inherited 2 baby raccoons which we kept for about 6 months. They were extremely intelligent, would open drawers, cabinets - you name it. If you were lying on the couch, they would feel your face with their hands while looking away, kind of like a blind person. They didn't bite. Here's my favorite story about the female: We had a large coffee can that was about 1/3 of the way full with miscellaneous nuts, washers, screws etc. We would then pick out something from the can and give it to the female. She would pat it in her hands, getting the "feel" of it. We would then throw the piece back into the can and mix it up. She would put one hand into the can and swish it around while looking away (like they always do). She would eventually pull out her hand with the exact same piece in it - every time! One time the female somehow got lost inside the walls of our house. We thought she was gonna die in there but after a while she came out through the basement!

Raccoons are definitely more curious than cats. I suppose all mammals can connect with us humans.
My 10 year old cousin raised one. It was loyal only to her, and she could handle it and play with it. Everyone else was barely tolerated at a distance. They lived in the country and it was able to adapt to living free. It came back every spring for a brief visit to show off her babies which she kept at a distance. It would bang on the door and they'd give her something to eat, and then she'd go away for another year. They're super intelligent but still a wild animal and if they feel threatened they will puff up and snarl and lunge at you.

Our family has raised 4, 1 at a time of course, and each one was different, but each one was friendly only towards the person that fed it. We traded the feeding chores, and in a few days the raccoon would be affectionate to it's new caregiver. Wonderful pets, but really hard on the furniture.

I feed raccoons on my porch. They are little people with unique personalities. They come by at around the same time each day (different times for different guests). They are incredibly clean and eat every crumb. I joke that they bring their own dishwasher. One brings her six kids who are adorable. One single raccoon knocks my broom down so it hits my front door to let me know she is there. Some will take food from my hands. They are all very polite and gentle.

@@07jeepgirl Sadly l can no longer feed my precious babies. It only takes one nasty neighbour. My babies are city dwellers. They used to take what they could from garbage bins but the new ones have locks. I hoped to help them bulk up before winter but now l can't. My dear little ones may well starve over winter.
You forgot to mention that they collect anything shinny; coins, keys, school supplies, silverwear, jewlry. Had one as a pet grew up on a farm. Had him in the house sometimes slept in my room. His name was cinnamon. On night he didn't come home he spent the night outdoors. Spent the whole night stealing the neighbors fruits and vegetables they were going to can the next day. That racoon of mine stole cucumbers, squash, apples, eggplants, different kinds of squah, corn, peaches, pears ect. The one that got me was the huge watermelon. I still wonder how he got it up that hill, across the road and through our yard and up 5 stairs to put everything on our front porch! Imagine that he was a definite little rascal got me in a lot of trouble. That he did. Mainly they didn't know I had him. Grandpa and Lonny gave him to me. They only found out when the neighbors called and wanted there produce back. They had several different garden areas they owned slot of land. Thank God we were very close to our neighbors. We all got a kick out of the story of our little thief in the night. Thanks for listening. I loved him a lot I was only 9-10.
We’ve rescued and rehabbed several baby raccoons. There is no creature cuter. But even as a baby when their teeth aren’t particularly SHARP, they still have VERY powerful jaws so it can still hurt a LOT when they bite, playfully or not. But we don’t keep them, never more than a few months. But when they see you in the morning and they yawn and troll and stretch their little baby hands out for you it’s beyond adorable!
I love the way she described how Raccoons analyze instructions from their human 'owners' - 'I understand what you want human -I'll take this into consideration and maybe - in the future I'll consider it'.

Raccoon: "Your objection is noted...and duly ignored."
I had a friend in high school in the 70s that had a pet raccoon... Rosco. He may have been a handful for the whole family but he was hysterical to stay with overnight. They got him as a baby and raised him as one of the family. He never bit me but he would grab a finger with his teeth and not let go until I pried it out. I think Rosco just assumed he was an extremely agile cat having 3 others roaming the house.
Having hands-on experience with an exotic pet before committing to adopting it should be the norm, imo. So many cases of pets being abandoned or rehomed could be avoided if more prospective owners really took the time to learn what life with that animal actually entails. As much as I enjoy watching raccoons, I would never want to have a raccoon as a roommate!

I looked at Binky like "What are you doing--that is a raccoon?!?" And then his reaction was like "oh, yeah, a raccoon, I gotta get this thing out of here!" and he chased it out the cat door.
I wish as many people watched this as the funny pet videos, thank you for posting. 4:10-I didn't know that, cool!

Raccoons do very well in the concrete jungle despite what the narrator thinks. They aren't called trash pandas for nothing.
Being a 1/2 Cherokee "hillbilly" I will say it like an adult feral house cat being brought into your home, everyone thinks they can, but it winds up hurting 99.9% of those who try, and is a beautiful experience for .9% of those who dare.
I found a baby racoon in the yard at my dad's cabin when I was 16. I got it some lactose free formula and raised it up. It was super friendly smart and cute. It would get a bit wild when in heat. The rest of the time no problem other than securing all shiny items. If you've baby proofed a house it's the same thing just all the way to ceiling. And I never forced it to stay inside it would go out and climb tree's and stuff. The real struggle was keeping it diurnal at first it was up all night and that was annoying. There definitely not dog's they are much smarter and have hands so can do much more but also enjoy alot of dog like games like play fighting and such. I would gladly have another unfortunately its not allowed where I live. But don't believe this video if you can handle snakes and lizards or large birds you can handle a racoon. But if you have trouble training a dog like pitbull or Rottweiler type dog maybe not good idea.

I've been feeding raccoons, skunks and the occasional opossum for 10 years. I do not try and befriend them. I just enjoy watching them. especially in the late spring when they bring their babies out to introduce them to the world. BTW, a couple of times I got too close to one of the raccoons and had one of them attack my shoes. I learned my lesson and backed off just to observe them. Lesson learned. I forgot to mention that raccoons are very destructive. I've got a lot of stuff on the patio and they have investigated all of it and usually leave everything in a shambles. I put up with it as the price for observing them.
dogs treat human houses like their dens, cats decided to move into our houses, the habitat of a small bird can be recreated well enough in our houses, but you cannot give a racoon the space and environment required even in a really large flat.
I raised 3 baby orphaned raccoons as a child. We always released them into the wild when they were around 1 year old. Their personality changes significantly at 1 year old and the males produce a musk compound on their back that my mom was sensitive to at 1 year old.

I have four of them, plus I feed outdoor ones every night, they get along well with my skunk, possum and cats. I should do a youtube channel on them but I don't have time to care for them and do content too. @@nowi27 yup we have him away. He was sooo cute but we do t have the time for the poor guy like we can’t leave him alone
I’m in Toronto in the thick of the concrete jungle, except for my tiny little back garden which is now a nightly playpen for 5 little ones and mama. They romp around, play on a swing and drink the water I put out for the birds. I have a cat flap and it took one of them about 2 seconds to figure it out (faster than the cat) and I keep catching him almost getting into my house! I go out to refill the water and tonight they all had to come and inspect the water jug! They’re cute, but in no way are they coming (invited) into my house. Nor am I feeding them- they’re healthy enough! Even the awkward, whiny runt is doing well! Toronto had plenty of food for wildlife!
This is spot on. Raccoons will do what they want to do. You have to put away anything you wish to keep. If you can handle it they are totally worth having as a pet. I miss mine so much.
Very interesting. But, I’m recalling a fox breeder that started with wild foxes. After several generations of breeding foxes by choosing the gentlest of them to procreate, the breeder successfully domesticated them. Couldn’t using the same approach domesticate raccoons, too?
I'm really glad there are folks who adopt these adorable creatures, although I'm not going to be one of them, for sure.
Some of the most fun of my childhood. We lived aways from the road so after about a week they had free reign. They knew to go back outside when we told them. They are more trainable than a cat but hard headed. They usually headed out after a year. Some came back for visits or to show off a litter. The next spring we just scoop up another by its mother who got hit by the side of the rode. Give a good foundation and send them on their own.
Absolutely agree!! i raised a 2 mail Raccoons and they were a chore to be sure. i saw very good advice on this YT video. YT is good for that. Bravo. They like to cuddle but only when they are tired or sleepy. Other than that, all bets are off. i loved my raccoons when i had them. i don't recommend them as pets due to the high maintenance aspect of caring for them.
Riding the school bus in ranch country we stopped at one ranch where my infatuation with the twin girls who lived there was only intensified by their pet raccoon that wanted to ride the bus with them to school. Gawd I loved those girls.
I raised 2 from babies they were so much better than cats and dogs, but they are very curious and like to get into stuff. the north American monkey bandit is my favorite pet. also saved some possums and had them in the house with the raccoons for winter time happy times.

A pal told me a possum was his favorite pet from over the decades of various animals.
Oh thanks for the heads up dude
domestication of these wild animals is not humane except if it’s endangered and it’s gonna be released in the wild and by a supporting team to make sure that it’s breeding.
I've got cats and they're a handful enough. As much as I love raccoons and find them adorable, yeah, I don't think they're the ideal pet for most people. I definitely wouldn't live with one.

@@kenyonbissett3512 You can train them to use a litter box. They take to it fairly quickly (you just need to pee in it once, and they will figure it out from there) That being said, one of the reasons they will never be a popular pet is their pee is one of the WORST smelling things I have ever experienced. Its like cat pee cranked up to 11. This is compounded with you pretty much have to padlock every cabinet, cupboard, refrigerator and trashcan.
It sound exactly like a cat, only bigger and less moody
Serious bites 😮thanks for this knowledge filled video 😮
The one I played with freaked me out. It didn’t know it’s own strength and would come flying at you like a linebacker and bite pretty dang hard. Ended up ripping my shoes!
Love raccoons. I feed them for years
I had a pet raccoon. He was great. Loved people. Would wander the neighborhood visiting everyone. One day someone gave him food with no water and he choked to death.

So beautiful review about this lovely animals !
Biting, scratching, tearing up your house but people still want them as pets. Make it make sense.
goodbye deadline and hello online
I can't begin to tell you the damage they do! You will find yourself saying,"Oh! I never thought they'd do that!". (we have that on jackets - you don't want to join that club)
In 2018, 2019 & 2020,..Raccoons would routinely push open my back door and get into my kitchen,....I kept bowls and bags of cat food in there to feed lost and run-away cats, that would visit from my neighborhood. 2 to 3 cats came by every day. I live near a college campus, and students cat's would routinely run away or escape, during a move to a new apartment. I moved there because of that, I always saw friendly cats roaming the streets. I have always had "indoor" cats of my own, who are not allowed outside, except under strict supervision, or in an enclosed, screened-in porch. The Raccoons probably smelled the dry cat food or followed the lost cats, to where they hung out. Every so often a mother & baby Raccoon, would get scared when I came into my kitchen, and they'd hide behind the stove or in a cabinet. I sometimes didn't even know it. I wouldn't see them and when I locked my doors up for the night, they were trapped in my kitchen until morning. We both were alarmed when I saw them the next morning,....we both froze in our tracks. I tried not to startle them and would coax them out,....sometimes the mom Raccoon would run out but the baby ones, were too scared. They were all so cute, and their fur is so fluffy. They wash their paws that resemble small human hands, before eating. They are not fussy and will eat just about any kind of dried cat food.
Cool video - raccoons visit my garbage cans nightly & I appreciate that they are careful & do not make too big of a mess. Sometimes they show up early while I am still working on things outside and they are pretty chill, they just look at me & say how much longer?
There is a reason they live outside because they are wild animals don't let their cute little faces fool you.

I knew a fellow who had a raccoon, and that raccoon was so sweet and cute that he ripped the skin off his arm. 🙃🦝👹
That's a very well fed racoon. Very.
A friend had a pet raccoon who grew to 60 lbs. It was so destructive (imagine coming home to find all the cupboards open - despite child locks - and every box of everything spread all over the kitchen - cereal, spaghetti, etc.). They eventually gave him to a zoo where he could be his raccoon self.
I rescued a baby raccoon 4+ years ago, but I kept it outside the house. It visited me often and like to have its fur brushed and combed. It showed up two summers in a row with a sow and babies. Unfortunately, he didn't show up last spring and I think it may have died in its den or fell victim to coyotes.
I don't care. I want one.
So raccoons are catdogs?
Excellent informational video. I still love Raccoons but not a personal companion for me. Thank you for a great video. :)
Wild animals have evolved to survive in the wild. Selective breeding can produce more domesticated variants in few generations. With raccoons I expect it would take probably take around 25 to 30 years depending on the selection methods used. If you're unfamiliar with the topic, I suggest starting by looking up The Silver Fox experiment.
im not for breeding these cute animals for people however im glad they r being presented as they are a challenge as a pet

We should breed red pandas for people, red pandas are endangered because they have no actual self defense against predators so they are an easy target, breeding them for people would save their species
"The chances of survival in the concrete jungle are almost zero." You've obviously never been to San Francisco. There are hundreds of raccoons all over that concrete jungle..

@LuckyBaldwin777

@@gamongames what's your point? Hundreds are far from "almost zero."
@gamongames

"almost zero" refers to survival rate of an individual, not total population numbers. if it doesnt say zero there's a chance, and if there's a chance individuals will survive.

the survival rate of an individual, yes because I have basic reading comprehension skills and watched the video where it was said.

@@gamongames OK lets use math to prove your point. Let's say each raccoon has a 1% chance of survival and one hundred raccoons survived. The probability of that happening is 0.01^100 which equals 1 e-200. That's a decimal place with 200 zeros in front of the 1. (0.000000...1) That means the probability of that happening to 10 significant figures is 0%. So what you say is impossible to happen given the probability you stated. Try again dumba$$..
Growing up on Vancouver island we had outside cats and when they were fed we had a family of raccoons that would eats and chill with them 😭so cute watching them eat with their lil hands 🦝
young animals will usually bit a lot more often than adults will, especially when playing. But if an adult gets angry and wants to bite, that's when it'll really hurt

It's not about getting one. You should only bring one into your home if they are young and orphaned or if they are injured and disabled. Don't bring wild animals home unless you are helping them and they wouldn't survive without you.
Its a shame that they don’t make good pets because they’re so cute
My mother raised baby raccoons and they were in everything regularly and relentlessly. In most states its against the law to have a raccoon as a pet unless you are licensed to have them. They need to be raised to be released in the wild.
But the walk up to me like I've been chosen 😂😂😂
I've been feeding the wild raccoons and possums for years. Used to hand feed them hot dogs...but have halted because I didn't want them too dependent on me. Watching them gambol around my rear porch brings this old Nana great joy.

I feed my backyard pals with dog food and occasional treats. They love fridge clean out days. It's smorgasbord!
As bad as all this information and these warnings are to me, I still dream of having a pet raccoon. I want to have some sort of exotic pet in my house, maybe even a few. I find life boring if I just get a dog or a cat which are common pets everyone always gets. The reason I like raccoons so much is that they seem so bold and curious. For example: a dog might get scared of fireworks or hostile and start barking and such, but a raccoon would just want to examine or even play with it. Only thing I'm afraid of is the stitches lol...

If you do plan on getting a coon don't worry about the scatches as much you'll need to worry about the rabies more make sure it has its shots and you'll want to feed it K.M.R for the first 5 weeks of its life then start adding a little banana baby food or smash wet cat food both work (baby works a bit better tho) and at 9 weeks ween it of the bottle so by 10 weeks it should be eating solid for and drinking only water (also make sure until it poops by itself take a WARM wash cloth and rub in a upward motion to its belly [anus- belly] also burp it after feeding session 1-9 weeks) well that's all I can help you with if you do get a coon so yea have fun if you do

I feel if you have the knowledge, time, space, and love, and financially are able to care for an exotic animal, you should be able to bc look what their lives in the wild are like. Usually, a short life that ends in tragedy. Should be considered case by case, not pass any blanket law outlawing everything.❤🌏🐾
My rescued cat here does the same. Bite me hard. And demands (does not ask for) food. He knows that love is all I have for him, and he takes advantage of it in return. But... then again, I love him. He is family. So I put up with it.
I have wild raccoons that come around now and again and a while back I watched one very deliberately untie a knot that was holding a 5 foot cord to a pole, then two of them played tug of war with the cord. I was sitting 10 feet away the whole time just watching the show as they tumbled and monkeyed around like the 3 stooges.
