Love this song. Sang it in the car all the time as a kid. Got in trouble in middle school because I wanted to sing it for a talent show. They made me pick a song from a female vocalist instead. Ended up singing “I’m in love and he’s in Dallas.” One of my favorite Garth Brooks concert moments is when he was talking about how much of an influence George Strait was on him. It went something like this: “Y’all seen me in concert when I was younger? I ran my fat ass all over the stage. Popped out of pianos. Swung from the rafters. Y’all ever seen George in concert? Does this look familiar to anybody? (He then imitates the famous George Strait stance) 2 hours of this. That’s it. And I’m still screaming right along with all the women in the front row. I’ll tell ya, all I ever wanted to be was George Strait. And after 30 years in the business...under my own name, thank you very much. I still want to be George Strait!”

His band is "The Ace in the Hole Band" but this song was recorded with some of the best studio musicians you can find in Nashville. There are so many great George Strait songs, some of my favorites are "The Chair", "You Look So Good In Love", "80 Proof Bottle of Tear Stopper", "Blue Clear Sky" and "Big Ball's In Cowtown (with Asleep at the Wheel)"

And don't forget his song "Ace in the Hole". "Big Ball's in Cowtown" was written and originally recorded by Hoyle Nix and of course also done by Bob Wills. They should really check out Wills though because before George was The King, Bob was.

Ace in the Hole is his band. Awesome. Great dancing music. That's where George got his start. Lead singer for Ace. I remember him in the 70's in the Texas dancehalls. They do some great Bob Wills swing and blues, too.

King George is well, King George! It's fun to analyze well known songs and try and figure out why they became iconic. Sometimes it's just the right song at the right time, sometimes it's because it's such a good song.

King George doesn't do flashy, he keeps it simple, in his sings and shows. He's also a very classy and friendly gentleman off stage. I've had the pleasure of meeting him off stage several times. He's been to Abilene several times over the years to watch his son ride in the high school rodeo finals, and to participate in roping competition. He starred in the movie "Pure Country". He refused to kiss the actress opposite him, because he considered it cheating on his wife, Norma. Like I said, classy gentleman.

Great reaction. I like George Strait for the same reason that you guys mentioned. It is not deformed sounds and autotune. It is just good guitar playing. What you guys are talking about at the end of the song when you said that your gunny came to you all and said that the rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated is also a story of Stonewall Jackson. During the Mexican-American war, it was reported that he was KIA and he wrote a letter home to his sister and said that exact same thing.

It's funny that you mentioned the country bass player having a boring job 'cause my dad used to play bass in a predominately country band and according to him the most boring stuff to play was, I think 80s/90s pop/rock, can't 100% remember, but I guess he found country more interesting to play than some other stuff, at least at that time. He might just be biased 'cause country has always been his main thing.

  • @vripp757

No! It's Missouri pronounced saying the "e" sound! Born and raised in MO my whole life and hate when people say "Missour-uh". It tends to be people from certain parts of the state who say the "uh" at the end, but a large part of us still pronounce it correctly with the "ee" at the end.

He never really moved around, sounded awesome, rocked 90,000 people, and then said goodbye with "the Cowboy rides away". 2nd best country concert ever, Garth Brooks was #1 concert, to be fair their totally opposite concerts though

Steel guitar was basically a requirement for a country band until mid-90's to 2000's as was a fiddle (violin). If you get a chance check out the videos for George's songs if for no other reason then to watch his expressions while he sings. Also he plays guitar on the majority of his songs. Pretty sure the background instruments were his band as his music doesn't sound much different live.

Geroge Strait is known as King George for a reason. He's not one of those singers that need a wild show to entertain people. He's just authentic talent. It's not by George but a song I would say is a good companion piece to this song is "Old Flames Have New Names" by Mark Chestnutt. I don't think you guys have reacted to Mark Chestnutt yet and he's certainly worth listening to. The pulling out the knife in a restaurant thing...LOL. My dad does that ALL the time.
