Love Ricky Skaggs! Yay for Bluegrass! Ricky Skaggs was big in the 80s. Then his faith got on the bad side of the record producers. He's still out there in the Christian music scene and bluegrass. Rumors of his death being unfounded. Highway 40 Blues, Don't get above your raising are some of his songs. Someone that surprisingly can do some serious 'pickin' is Steve Martin.

Ricky killed that guitar. His primary instrument is mandolin. He also plays banjo and fiddle. The references to Uncle Pen, and Above your Raisin' are a couple of the many hit songs Ricky has had. The man playing Uncle Pen was the great Bill Monroe. One of the greatest bluegrass musicians of all time, and (I believe a member of both the country and rock n roll halls of fame.

@@BourbonCountryReacts funny story, I was working as a field manager at a roofing company, and one day I was talking with the crew foreman who was Hispanic and the homeowner who was VERY southern and that expression came up and the foreman was confused so I explained it to him. He thought it was great. A little while later I heard him trying to explain the phrase to one of his guys, but the thing was he didn't fully understand it himself so he was making no sense and the look of total confusion on his crewman's face was priceless!

The old man in the video "Uncle Pen" is Bill Monroe the father of bluegrass. Uncle Pen was actually Bill Monroe's Uncle Pendlton Vandiver who was also Bill's musical mentor and played the fiddle. Bill wrote a song about his uncle of course named Uncle Pen. Ricky Skaggs covered Uncle Penn on the same album as this song. You should react to Ricky Skagg's Uncle Pen with the Boston Pops. Ricky was named Country Music's Entertainer of the Year in 1985. This album played a huge role in his winning that award. He's won 15 grammy awards with his last one in 2016. He's a member of the Hall of Fame for Country, Bluegrass, and Gospel Music. The American Music Association awarded him with an Instrumentalist Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015..

I was raised in Colorado, but my Mom is from the Midwest, but her Mother was from some Holler in WV. And although my Dad was born and raised in Colorado his Grandparents and Mother were deeply southern. So I was raised in Colorado with our western slang hearing my Mom's combination of Midwestern and West Virginian vocabulary/expressions, and my Dad's deep south expressions. Needless to say when I got to College in SC at a University who prided themselves on culture and the arts I got quite a few looks of confusion when I talked! But I'll say, when I left campus I felt right at home talking with people in the community!

Ricky has long collaborated with other great contemporary Bluegrass artists while maintaining a solo career of his own. In this video, he was accompanied by his wife, the lady with the orange scarf and big smile. She is a member of a family Bluegrass band, The Whites. If you like Bluegrass, do I have some artists to introduce you two to! I am greatly enjoying your channel; keep the good times rolling!

There's an old black and white video of him performing mandolin with either Earl Skruggs or Earnest Tubb when he was like 6 years old. Titled "YOUNG RICKY SKAGGS". I think he was considered like a child prodigy. Then that kinda seemed to come full circle when Ricky Skaggs performed "Blue Moon of Kentucky" with a kid who was a good violin player and singer. They talked before the performance about how the kid's favorite artists was Earnest Tubb, who Ricky performed with as a little boy, and passed before Carson Peters was born.

I love great musicianship. I just love it! It could be playing an instrument or singing, hearing someone who has mastered their craft just makes me happy. I can't play any instruments above a very rudimentary level. It's not fair, I have 2 sisters who both play the piano quite well but in different styles. My oldest sister is much more comfortable improvising and would probably be really good at bluegrass. My other sister is much more classically minded and likes to have all the notes to follow. Here senior high school recital was a mixture of Beethoven, Bach, and Rachmaninoff. She went on to college and majored in piano performance for a year and a half before her wrists gave out due to a medical condition. Then there's me, I took 12 years of piano lessons all through school and I just couldn't get my brain to figure out how to play multiple notes in both hands at the same time. I can do multiple notes in one hand, but no matter how much I practiced I couldn't get both hands to work at the same time. Even if I didn't do well with the piano, I'm very grateful for the years of lessons because they gave me a solid music foundation. My parents laugh because out of the three of us kids I'm probably the most musical minded and have the best ear, but the only instrument I excelled at was the voice.

Man it can be such a fine line between bluegrass and country, especially before the 90s. Country gets its roots from so many genres. Bluegrass, folk, the blues, and rock come readily to mind so it makes sense. I feel the 90s is where mainstream country started introducing more of the pop sound, and in the 2000s it REALLY took on a pop sound. I'm feeling like country is starting to return to it's roots a little more with artists like Tyler Childers, Zach Bryan, Colter Wall, Nolan Taylor, etc. I mean even Oliver Anthony could be thrown in with that mix. With how popular some of those artists are getting, I think it's only a matter of time before mainstream record labels are going to try and find a shill to try and match that sound.

Ricky Skaggs is a legend. He does mostly Bluegrass. But this was during his phase when he crossed over into country but the Bluegrass influence definitely comes through. You will see him play with a lot of people. I saw him live years ago and he was awesome.
Uncle Penn is Bill Monroe! Ricky is still a constant staple-musician at the Opry. Iconic Musician, there not a string instrument he can’t play.

Great reaction. This was when Skaggs was going for a more country sound. His popularity was up fairly high, now he just does what he wants. Still incredible music.
Everything Ricky does is gold. He is soooo good at bluegrass, top of the line. His history is quite amazing.
I had a chance to see him outside of Pittsburgh a few months ago. He was just as great as in this video. Tremendously talented man!
"Uncle Pen" was the late great Bill Monroe...the granddaddy of Bluegrass. "Don't get above your raisin' ain't a Texas thang...it is country. Oh, and Skaggs is a country boy from KY. You can find a video of him playing with Earl Scruggs and Lester Platt when he was 7 years old on You Tube.
Ricky Skaggs and his band Kentucky Thunder are some of the finest pickers you will ever listen to. Definitely heavy bluegrass with a hint of country
Not often you get to see a person who invented an entire Genre of music in video footage, but you got to witness it here by seeing Bill Monroe. I love seeing the looks on peoples faces, the moment when they realize how talented Country music musicians are. Lol. Great reaction guys!

The rabbit hole to go down after this song... you must go down it, boys! This song is even more awesome when you watch the live TV version!
Ricky skaggs is a true musician and a legend he is one of the best
Ricky Skaggs is the king of bluegrass. SO talented!!
Ricky Skaggs is uber-talented, and I concur that he is Bluegrass. For most people who don't listen to Country, Bluegrass is just more goat-ropin' music.
You also saw Ricky Skaggs and Bill Monroe (Uncle Penn) as singers on the video of "Will the circle Be Unbroken" with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. If you want more eargasms, you need to watch the Earl Scruggs and friends version of Foggy Mtn Breakdown. You get banjos, electric guitars, resonator guitar, organ, piano, mandolin and harmonica. And you would recognize some of the musicians.
I requested this a couple years ago. Look at the live version - Ricky Skaggs - Country Boy - Live On The BBC's Wogan Show 1986. Great reaction. Several genres fall under the Country umbrella.

In case you didn’t figure it out, Ricky is who sings backup (with Patty Loveless) on Vince Gill’s Go Rest High On That Mountain. Pretty sure you reacted to that, just can’t remember if that was the version you watched.

His band played all live in 90’s (that fast).
Ya gotta check him out on Austin city limits from the 80s ...
