This is funnier in the book, where they go into a lot more detail about the worst night of Rimmer's life, and is well worth reading.

The books are really well written. They have the space to be less funny, which works.

But is she remotely intelligent enough to appreciate British comedy? I mean she probably likes Benny Hill because all of the sexual harassment humor reminds her of her orange god, but I can’t see her getting Red Dwarf or Blackadder.

How come, despite the fact they don’t get along, Lister always tries to comfort Rimmer when he’s really upset? Like when they were planning the fishing trip, or when celebrating his death day? He really is the most decent human being.

In the Red Dwarf book Better Than Life, Lister's perfect existence (achieved through a brain attachment of some kind) is like Jimmy Stewart's in It's A Wonderful Life, whereas Rimmer's is as a ridiculously powerful billionaire type. Arnold comes to realise how much more mature than him Lister is - the fact that his idea of happiness is so grounded and more modest than his own. Rimmer just HAS to fuck it all up for him, of course . . .

In the novels there's even a moment where Rimmer realises he's become a slightly nicer person thanks to Lister's good influence (he apologises to his double after their huge fight and the double sneers that the old him would never have done that).

Because Lister’s a great guy in general, he’s not a dickhead. There are people who drive me up the feckin’ wall, but I’d still comfort them if they were upset.

He said in the opening episode that if Lister hadn’t smuggled the cat aboard and gone into stasis, Rimmer would have had help fixing the drive plate. I’d argue it’s Hollister’s fault for not ordering someone to help him or bringing Lister out of stasis temporarily to help him.

In real life, anyone who laughed at someone with gazpacho heated up would be considered a weirdo instead because its not unusual for people to prefer heated soup. For example, tea is usually served hot, but there is also plenty of people who prefer it cold, known as iced tea.
