The end bit is cut off slightly, but when Kryten's busy checking for the last time, the counsellor stamps the page with 'restore to factory settings'. I think it's a set up so that he can do this without Kryten seeing. As you can tell, I watch RD waaay too much.

Having something screwed down is a metaphor for it being stable, just as having a screw loose is a metaphor for being crazy.
"i've figured out the raw emotion of angry complete with fits of violence.....HI YA!!!!" LOVED IT!
The rudimentary bouts of random violence always gets me😂🤣
This is one of the greatest parts or RD as a whole "...yes sir i was created after you died" "lovely,lovely" ... "youre not dead anymore sir" "arent i?" absolutely briliant :D
"Now that's in the future, isn't it?" The correct response to this would be: "Actually no, its in the very VERY distant past, considering it was about 3 million years ago. You died in a radiation leak that wiped out the ships crew and you are essentially a nanobot created bio-replica of the original Psychiatric Counsellor"

I love this episode. In fact, the whole "Back in the Red" trilogy is great.
2:44 I think Kryten should’ve said “I’ve turned into a human!” because he did actually turn human in the fourth series. I thought it would’ve made the joke funnier.
"This year's emotion show." Goes to show you how bored they got on Starbug. Talking about Lister's grandma's squeaky gate, playing Junior Angler, and watching Kryten display all the emotions he's learned over the years.
What is interesting, I found, about this is that it is mentioned in the episode "Queeg" that the ship's psychiatrist is named Brannigan. It should be noted that when Rimmer does the impression of Brannigan in "Queeg", his voice is high-pitched, like Dr. McLaren's is here. They should have stuck with the episode Queeg, and called this guy Brannigan.
and how long would you say ive been dead for?" absolutely brilliant

Why would a mining ship need a crew so large that it needs a chief psychiatric counsellor? As in, someone in charge of multiple counsellors.
@geiramk
5 жыл бұрын
The suggestion of the series might be that, even with the entire rest of the crew wiped out, then the one remaining crew member, a mechanoid, the holographic projection, a cat and the ship's AI could still provide ample material for the full allotment of specialists to have their work cut out.
@PCLoadLetter

Replacement mining crews and canaries aside, the ship doesn’t need people. The scutters seem to keep stuff going. The only reason they need human technicians for the chicken soup vending machines is because the scutters had a better union.

I think that is how sane people talk to us Dwarfers.
Come on people...... the counsellor clearly thinks Kryton is delusional & is getting him to check that the chair is screwed down, so that he can't pick it up & whack him over the head with it. As he asks more questions, the answers Kryton gives sound even more ludicrous than the last, so it makes the counsellor think he's in danger from a real psychotic & that is why he keeps asking Kryton about the chair. It's Krytons explanations of things that keep the gag going for so long ....got it now ?

One small quibble; that blow should have mashed the poor guy's hand...!!! Psychoanalysing robots can be very difficult and is fraught with peril...!!!
He's worried Kryten is so crazy that he'll attack him.
The screwed down joke is basically making sure Kryten has no objects to pick up and use to harm the officer with.
If he was worried about being hit in the head with a chair maybe, just maybe, the shrink shouldn't be so condescending;-)

Not attempting to spin series out into hundreds of episodes is (for me) a key strength. Don't get me wrong - the US has mastered the hundred+ episode series format better than any country in the world - and occasionally it works well - but all too often I find many series (comedy or drama) fall flat and become 'static and formulaic' as they flounder about trying to fill another 20+ lot of episodes.
Damn, that's a well done scene.
comedy genuis.

The chair jokes are because the therapist guy think Kryten is nuts and he's going to freak out and kill him with the chair. :D
