What to do when your last employer fires you. And when you are going to look for a new job, your potential future employers call your last employer why it didn t work out and your former employer tells bad things about you.....this way it can be pretty hard to ever get employed again...... how can anyone get out of that? :(

I've spent the last 7 years in another country,I've had a few experiences not d irectly related to my career but the last 4 years I've had practical training experience in a law firm. Recently (almost 2 months ago) I've decided to return to my home country and I intend to resume my career (as attorney at law/legal advisor). So I've begun searching for jobs, prepare my LinkedIn profile, but I have a problem: I'm not sure how to deal with this situation in my CV and on my LinkedIn profile, without emphasizing the fact that I'm currently unemployed (because I've recently returned home). I know that most employers don't take much in consideration the candidates who are currently unemployed so I don't know if I should update my LinkedIn profile and CV mentioning the date when my last activity ended (19th of March), or how to put it without looking bad.

Crazy how distrusting, judgmental, nosy, discriminatory, employers and society have become. One funny thing about all this is, if we don't remember our work history dates its near impossible for us to get them. Yet employers can get them them with ease. We the people cant get the presidents tax returns, but any employer can dig into our taxes, finances, and credit reports, using them for their discriminatory garbage.

"has become"? Man, the Ford Motor Company used to send investigators to their employee's homes unannounced to evaluate their cleanliness and the way they ran their households. Union busters used to use violence to keep employees in check. Some employers lock their employees into the buildings they work in - even today in America. I wholly agree with you it's fnkin ridiculous, but it's not any worse than it's ever been.

My whole life is a gap! I am changing specialties every few months and have finally kept focus on a few, getting them to a higher level. Really employers have a hint as to why there are gaps (discrimination), so they do not usually ask this too often as they probably have done the same to other employees and fell queasy about revisiting the past. Discrimination about salary, age, personal reasons. So yes many people have gaps and it is not their fault.

  • @john-paulkrcik5912

That's really splashing in the shallow end. A single hiring manager or company isn't what creates gaps in employment for a worker. It would take an industry or discipline wide conspiracy for it to be an issue of discrimination. Here is a simple alternate suggestion: gaps in a worker's history will generally have a correlation to market downturns and corrections. And.. Some workers adapt better than others to how market contractions and expansions create shifts in nuanced skill demand.

I think it's really great that you have covered this gap in work history concept. I really appreciate the time and effort you and your team invest in these videos. I am wondering if you would consider posting one for gaps in work history based on those who just chose not to work for awhile. There are many reasons people have gaps, but making a decision not to work is one of them. Sometimes people just plainly do not want to work for a period of time. They enjoy not working. I do understand that it is a blessing, but that is not the point I am trying to convey. Some people do have the ability to Not work and then decide to go back to work after a long period of time out of an unexpected necessity or just because they just want to work again. This is a true life situation for many people that is never addressed in returning to the job market. I would love to see this reason covered on some KZread channels. I have searched for someone who has covered this concept and have found none. It would be very helpful for those of us who want to get back to work if some good advise on cover letters, resumes, and interviews were covered for those who just wanted to stay home for awhile. People should not be judged for long gaps in their work history. It is a personal decision, a perogative that we all have, if we chose to make it a choice. I have watched some of your videos and thought that you would be able to give great advise for this concept. I really enjoy your advise and appreciate your time and effort in providing it.

For someone who's still unemployed for years with no achievements, but has some experience and knowledge in programming, I've been keeping myself busy by working on personal projects on the side to keep my skills sharp and updated while searching for a new job. However, I was not successful in finding any clients to do consulting work with them, due to the large volume of other freelancers taking the same jobs that I sent proposals to. Do you think working on personal projects to keep my skills sharp and current the best way to let employers know that I do not sit around and do nothing, despite not doing any consulting work with others despite finding some?

I'm 24 and been unemployed for years. I got my first job at a clothing store last October and left in late January when my seasonal position expired. After that I've been unemployed. I've been looking for a job, I almost got hired at Amazon last month but I never received my confirmation email even though they had told me my background and drug test met their requirements. I was going to be hired at UPS a few days after but my dad wouldn't let me go through with it because his friends said UPS was too hard work and I'm a female. He didn't think I was strong enough to work there so I withdrew my application even after I interviewed and was offered to take the warehouse tour. I'm pretty stressed out. UPS might not had been right fir me but at least I would be employed by now.

Is being one of top employees for a particular month be counted as one? Also, I have gap in employment. I have been doing a lot of contract work, but it has been leaving me unemployed for long periods of time. Trying to get stable work, but job market has not been good. Not to many employers hiring on a permanent basis. How do I explain to employers? Also, companies will not give me references due to HR issues. Any suggestions?

Its such a tough situation, I lost my Travel & Tourism job in Covid-19 pandemic, June 2020, when i came back home i decided i am gonna prepare for some competitive exams and meanwhile i did a diploma as well which doesn't have to do anything with tourism. Now in 2022 i realized i have to go back to tourism industry, preferably the cruise lines sector but its almost 2 years of this gap.. I am hesitant about this gap because the diploma or competitive exams which i gave has nothing to do with tourism and i cannot really blame pandemic lol.

This is how I did, list that advanced degree as a part of your experience: for e.g Master Candidate cum Research assistant, and for job description you can list out your research experience, being an assistant to your professor and how you help them achieve the results, your collaboration with other faculties, universities, companies or government office to achieve you research purpose, tutor experience, seminar, conference or papers you are writing. Actually, they're a lot more you can write. Projects you're involved in your courses. Anything that you think you contributed to the stuff in your research area.

My gap in work/resume is due to my age. I am low 60's in age but can't seem to get hired for positions in management that I know I am very qualified for. In fact, I had 3 online interviews for one company and they were so excited to see me in person, that the hiring manager went out of his way to travel from Dallas to IL for our interview. When we met, his impression was not as enthusiastic as he was on the phone. Made me feel terrible that my age did seem to matter. Sadly I never heard back from them other than the dreaded email stating we are going with a different candidate (I was one of two). But I did see the other candidate as I was walking out and he looked late 40's, early 50's. Very sad indeed as I was hoping to work another 10 years. I have been out of work for 9 months, been on several qualifying management roles and nothing.

Reason for asking about gaps: 1. If you've been gapless, they expect to ONLY continue the long road of wage increase which isn't much to begin with. Employers don't want to compesate you for being adventurous. 2. If there are gaps, they are expecting a good reason and if that reason means a generous bump in your salary it means they won't choose you simply because they can't afford it or won't. Bottom line: KNOW WHAT THEY ARE OFFERING TO START! because if they are expecting to give you the starting salary of an entry level job, they will hound you of ANY GAPS!

All of these things were under the table. Do I include them on my résumé?

Paramount is that I hope beyond hope you are safe now. That you are free from that situation and on a path to healing and happiness. In regards to addressing work history, I might state that you assumed a primary caregiver role for a family member suffering from a longterm (and often debilitating) illness. The abuser had the illness, but you suffered from its presence. You were your own caregiver.

I have gap in my resume but not an employment gap. My situation is, I postponed my final year for 2 years and yet I got my first job in the same year of postponing. i.e. I was to graduate in 2015 Nov but since I had issues and could not do my finals in July of that year I had to post pone, but in the same year (2015, Dec) I got a job, so I had started working while undergraduate. so In my resume I have my academics from 2011-2017 and my first experience in Dec 2015 which normally brings lots of questions from the recruiters. Is there a way to explain this in the resume instead? **I hope I'm clear with my poor English

@@johnnytsunami3558 Yes, I did not leave it as a gap. I basically formatted it vaguely as fashion advertising- listing my agency as the employer and role as brand ambassador. In the description I wrote bullet points like “Increased brand publicity by participating in global commercial advertisements, print campaigns and social media marketing” and “Collaborated with both established and contemporary fashion designers to promote new collections on the runway and at red carpet events during Fashion Week” to name a few. It did work and I was hired in 2 weeks at an art and design gallery that I now sell my own products in as a newly formed small business (:
