This is the type of story that truly changed my mind on the whole "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality. It's so easy for someone outside of the life to say "don't kill people and sell drugs" with a condescending tone, but what about people like this guy? Listen to him describe his young life and his upbringing and tell me what you would have done in that situation? When all the morals and teachings were never implemented, what values burn bright in your heart? Would you fight for freedom and self respect? A lot of time these young kids are fighting for those values in the only way they know how. They didn't have a choice their role models put the gun in their hands.

I noticed the same thing and then I got to thinking, do some people do these kinds of things out of boredom? At least in part? I've never been a gang member but I have been violent and criminal for a good chunk of my 31 years of life. I was robbing my freshman peers with hammers and knives at 14. For fucking weed. For extra smoke and pocket money and because it was quick, relatively easy and exciting. There were other reasons I acted and behaved that way but one of them really was boredom. People need fulfilling shit to do with their lives imo. Without meaning, structure, purpose and guidance, some of us truly are lost to our environments and the more base, primal sides of our nature. I know it's cliche but what if he got into sports instead? What if I took sports more seriously in highschool? What if I kept playing travel soccer? What if I took writing more seriously and I got into journalism or writing as an art when I was a kid? What if this dude got into playing hockey instead? What if he knew he was into fishing? What if he was into working on small engines and all that stuff instead of drugs, gangs and violence? Where would he be now? It's really like some people get into lives like this because they don't see much else worth doing in their environment.

Seems to be a product of his environment to an extent. While we only know what was presented on camera, he seems to have a lot of awareness and portrays humble characteristics. He does not seem to have that hard exterior or need to portray his power compared to others who have been on here.

I was born in Chicago and only visited a few times since I was raised in Washington State. One visit was when I was an addict. I was taken under a guy's wing, and Q reminds me of him. I got to see all kinds of shooting galleries downtown, visited a few projects, and did all kinds of dope there. It is a scary place and it wasn't as bad when I was there (2003), but his honesty and demeanor reminds me so much of that experience. I am lucky to have not been killed when I was there. A white man, addicted to heroin and crack, carelessly visiting the projects and various high-rise apartments. I hope Q can get out of skid row. He is smart and shines when he laughs and smiles. Best of luck to you, Q. Awesome interview.

I don’t understand how we let the type of violence that goes on in places like Chicago continue. Public safety needs to be an absolute priority in our country. Little kids don’t deserve to grow up in fear.

When these people talk about their childhood and how great it was to have a dad. Then their biggest thing they want to change is not to have a relationship with their kids it saddens me. Even when I wasn’t sober I always wanted to the best mom I could be. And if I didn’t have my kids, which I always have and have long term sobriety..... that would have been my first goal. For him to say housing and that he punkd out when he saw his daughter angered me. Yes she has your grandma and her mom, but she needs you! Make her a priority.

The south side is violent, it is, and I will do everything in my power to never live in the south or west sides of Chicago. As for me, considering I don't live in the thick of it, I'm not all that worried about the violence going on there for my own safety. I am however worried about the rampant car-jackings happening everywhere that often turn deadly. And from my understanding, it's not just Chicago with this problem right now. The way I see it, learn whatever city you live in, and try not to hang around the rough neighborhoods too long, or ever if you can help it.

So, i'm pretty sure I've never commented before, but... Can it be that you (Mark) have begun to shoot the still shots differently? Or maybe the post-shot adjustments have changed somewhat? I have the feeling that you are showing stills that are maybe more representative of your actual perception of the person? I feel like the representation in the current stills don't have quite the instant 'grab you' appeal. But if you still take the plunge and choose it because it's this channel (SWU), you're pleasantly surprised. You're rewarded. The interviews are even more personalized, showing or bringing out more of the person's character, it seems. Anyway, maybe it's just me... But it pulls me back, every time.

4:35 The Robert Taylor Homes. One of the many "projects" that have since been demolished. I ride the Metra through there every day and that whole area which used to be a bunch of tall buildings is just flat land with quiet, empty roads remaining. You might see a car or two drive through from time to time but it's just a deserted and vast land of nothingness. They've built a few new things over there and the Chicago Fire Dept will hook up the fire hydrants there from time to time and shoot water around for training purposes, but most of the time there's a police car parked against the train tracks my train rides on and there is nothing there now.
