Sega! Nintendo! Game Gear! Game & Watch! Only a few games! £40! £50! Why is this a thing? Where did we go wrong? Can I have a decent Game Gear remake please? No? Can I have a whole set of Game & Watch games? No? Oh.

    @Enmity the Kindhearted Nintendo is actively hostile to such efforts. The fact that NES is easy to mod is entirely because of their efforts to make manufacturing cheap, including using as cheap components as possible. Nintendo could reasonably called a company that manages IP and produces gaming systems on the side. Their hostility was clear in the "mod" scene, even before the first emulators started coming out. They will scrounge the last penny they can out of any game or gaming system. They started as a company selling cards for gambling. Not trading, not for children: gambling. Addictive, legally questionable, gambling. This fact helps in understanding the company and how it acts.

    Quick Google shows these little GameGears have apparently been hacked already. They are basically tiny Linux boxes running some kind of emulator. Nintendo Game & Watch consoles have also been hacked, but those have really low-end hardware (an ARM micro instead of a real SoC, I guess due to their main purpose being a clock, not a gaming console) and it's only possible to replace their games, not add more.

Unlike the old-fashioned rechargeables which wouldn't stay charged for 2 femtoseconds without self-discharging themselves into environmentally-hazardous landfill.)

    @@DinoBunnyStudio A lot of Sega's technically superior choices ended up being their undoing. Nintendo has always worked off of inexpensive, well-understood hardware to keep their consoles affordable to the point of making a profit off of initial sales. Sega, on the other hand, wanted to include the newest and best for the sake of being ahead of the competition. Sega no longer makes consoles because the combined failures of the Sega CD, Saturn, and Dreamcast meant that they lost a lot of money investing in doing what "the other guy's don't." Even the Game Gear was barely successful, because it cost three times as much as the Game Boy at the time and Nintendo was about to release it first in a smaller form factor and then with a color screen.

  • @GmodPlusWoW

    The size of it is comically tiny, almost a laugh. It's like the Game Gear was a little too big, so later the guys behind this said "hold my sake" and made the Game Gear Micro with gibbons in mind. I mean, if gibbons had the wits to play with consoles, this weeny little thing would probably be perfect for their hands. Still, the Game & Watch Color is alright, even though it only holds a few ROMs where most mini consoles (official and unofficial) typically hold dozens.

    fun fact: with a simple LED backlight mod and some good rechargeable NiMH AAs the Game Gear can last up to 10hrs fun fact #2: the aforementioned mod is NOT the McWill, which consumes more power than a friggin starter engine - in fact, even more current than the original screen setup. You can notice it by touching the screen after a while, it gets quite hot. It's a whole microcontroller that translates the VPU video output signals. fun fact #3: the GG SMPS was a work of art back in the days - understandably so, because the backlight was absolute crap and the system had to spare every last bit of power it could gather.

    One thing that I wonder why they haven't thought of, and which I think might sell quite well: Customized mini-consoles. Customized with respect to which games it comes bundled with. In other words, you go to the company's website selling the mini-console, it has a huge list of old-timey games that the console supports, each game has a particular price (like 10 cents, or 20 cents, or whatever), you click on the checkbox of each game you want, and then you order it and pay the total, and they send the mini-console bundled with the games you chose.

    the Game Gear Micro is real fucking cute and all but it really does feel like a piss take when there are tons of people who genuinely would love to have a modern version of a Game Gear that doesn't take up as much room, has a quality modern screen, doesn't eat up batteries like chips and comes with built-in games so you don't have to carry dozens of cartridges around. This is the kind of stuff these "mini" systems are really made for, especially since the Game Gear is a bit on the obscure side these days, and good luck finding a working one for sale, not to mention the games, and good luck being able to afford them. It's sad that emulation remains the best option for most people.

That's my point. It wouldn't matter if they put a few terabytes of storage into a mini console, unless you want to hack it and put things onto it yourself you won't get everything in one place from an official product. It would just be far to costly to license all the old games that were not first party.

  • @InfernosReaper

    @InfernosReaper

    @@Stephen__White It honestly dumb that anyone should have to license 20+ old media in the first place. Of course, that's a problem with the copyright laws. They started reasonable enough, but a lot of extensions got tacked on over the years, especially when Disney, a company that made bank off remaking public domain works, was about to lose copyright over Mickey Mouse. Gotta love greedy companies and lobbying. But anyway, why does anyone need anything *official* for doing *all* of the games ever anyway? There are plenty of good kits for Pi computers. Official things really shouldn't just be cheapass emulation boxes anyway. They be actual hardware made smaller & more energy efficient using the 20+ years of technological advancement.

I think a toy version would be fun to carry around with keys and fiddle with without worrying about damaging an expensive collectors item. It could be a cute watch, keychain light, play some chiptune Sega tunes, FM radio and MP3 player. If the controls were improved, could it be a mini Bluetooth controller for smartphones?
