Raspberry Pi Cases | Ashens

Ғылым және технология

Do YOU have a tiny little computer that you're running old games on? Do YOU wish it looked like something that it isn't? Do YOU wish I'd stop capitalising the word "you"? Well, this is probably a video that could potentially interest you maybe!
Cram your Raspberry Pi into a case shaped like a Mega Drive, SNES or NES, then fire up Retropie and not care what the case looks like because you're concentrating on the screen!
Also featured - several disappointing cases not made by Retroflag, who have absolutely nailed it.

Another issue is that the Pi 4 runs fairly hot compared with previous models. There is an update to help with this, but I ended up getting an open-air case with a fan just to be on the safe side, as the stock closed case just wasn't enough.

  • @OttosTheName

    @OttosTheName

It's also a bit larger then the Pi 1, 2 and 3. But they fail to mention that everywhere. So even if you make some new cutouts in the cases you have it's not guaranteed to fit (it will fit in the previous original case with some modding, won't look very nice but keeps most dust out of it.) It does still have the same hole pattern, I managed to find out eventually. And yeah the 4 gets hot. Usually not a big problem, it ramps up the clock speed for a boost of speed and then it goes to idle most of the time. But when playing video or playing more demanding games you'll want an open case with at least a heatsink I think.

When I got my Pi3, I had debated which neato case to buy for it but just couldn't decide. So I went the best way possible: made my own. I took an old Verizon DSL router, gutted it, glued in some plastic gubbins to hold the Pi steady and it's perfect. There's JUST enough room inside for the board, a 270 degree HDMI adapter, plus a tiny 3.5mm extension cable. With that, all the wires run out the back of the router. If you didn't look close enough, you would just think I was daft enough to still be using DSL in this day & age.

Stuart, I'm putting this here because it might be of help to some. If you get a RetroFlag case, there is a chance that you may run into an issue where your Pi won't boot when installed into it. If you're using a USB power supply with an in-line switch, this will conflict with the Pi's own power switch and nothing will happen even if your power supply is turned on. For these cases, use a straight-through power supply and you should be good. Also, on the MegaPi case, after a handful of times opening and closing the SD cover, it does get easier to open.

I have the SuperPi case myself, I like it a lot. Only downside is relevant to my specific setup: It's quite difficult to remove tiny USB sticks from the little side compartment, like the receiver for my wireless keyboard and a 64GB USB drive that I use for my roms. I have never been a fan of the NESPi case, though, because it bothered me to no end that you'd have to plug the Ethernet cable into the front, which just looks wrong. I'd have much preferred a side flap like with the SuperPi or the MegaPi.

I let out a groan of actual satisfaction when the second NES case appeared. Damn did that look good compared to the first one.

"Lets just put that away and pretend I didn't spend money on it." is like, the catch-phrase of first world money having people problems if ever there was one.

Judging from the thumbnail, I honestly thought this video would be just Stewary dissing on all the mini consoles being basicly the same sh*t. Still a curious video though.

It would be a very short video: copy a RetroPie image onto an SD card; then put it into a Raspberry Pi.

The Raspberry Pi is really an incredible development in computing. I predict that someday, instead of fooling around with calculator games during class, kids will be programming for fun on Raspberry Pis and writing software for kicks. Either way they won't be doing their actual schoolwork, because some things don't change.

Pair that SuperPI case with a 8bitdo SF30 Pro and you'd have a very nice looking SNES mini setup that does much more than the actual thing.

Ashens: I'm surprised you haven't done an American dollar store special yet. Poundland has been done a lot, I think you need to stop by a dollar store next time you're in the US and see what you can find.

My Raspberry Pi cases are a couple of old arcade cabinets, courtesy of Pi2JAMMA. Quite large for a Raspberry Pi I guess.

These cases remind me of the first decade of 2000 and its hunderds of different official and crappy bootleg covers for Nokia’s phones. Especially Nokia 5100 was made to change covers on the fly because the actual phone part was one solid block inside the split covers.
