Full Cycle- 1960 AMC Kelvinator W70M washing towels

Ойын-сауық

Thank you to my friend, Steve, for giving me the opportunity to own this machine. This Kelvinator is a 1960 model with the famous concentric washing action. Kelvinator got this design from the ABC company of Peoria, IL. Kelvinator was a short lived machine with this design, lasting from 1953~1967. WCI ultimately purchased Kelvinator from AMC and killed off this design. These machines work quite well and are virtually silent. The boot was a weak point for these. This machine is quite nice and arrived fully functional. I will be doing some work to it in the future. But, for now we will get to see how this machine works and how it does. Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. Thank you for watching.

I agree with you hands-down this is the splashiest washing machine ever built. I love it though, it’s so unusual and it looks like it actually would do a very good job cleaning. I can’t imagine the cabinet lasting long with detergent and bleach being splashed all over it all the time. back then I’m sure not everyone was like you that wiped it down and keep things as nice as you do. Great video and super find. 🍀🍀🍀

My mom's first automatic washer was a 1963 Kelvinator--and AMC called the washing method "Deep Turbulent Washing Action." It wasn't exactly quiet when the washer went out of balance and the buzzer went off--but otherwise,, it did a remarkable job. Mom's machine had a lint filter on top of the agitator, however...

Love this Washer... Freaking amazing job cleaning your clothes with most excellent agitation, with the most unique Agitator. Love how back in the day , different manufacturers had their own ideas of different yet very effective agitators.. The roll over in this machine is fantastic.. To bad as the 1960s and early 1970s went on they didn't keep this agitator... This washer definitely gets your clothes clean like they should be, and in plenty of water. 1000% better than the H E Crap today.. Thank you for an awesome video..

Whirlpool, when they bought Maytag promptly destroyed everything which made a Maytag a Maytag. Did the same with KA mixers until the realized that people wouldn't accept plastic gears in a stand mixer at that price. It's a sad aspect of market reality in America.

The reason that AMC ended up owning Kelvinator in the first place was because Charles Nash was looking for a man to succeed him as the head of Nash Motors,he picked George Mason who ran Kelvinator so basically he bought the company in order to get the man he wanted to succeed him.

Personal testament to GM Frigidaire. My parents had both an upright freezer and a ridge freezer. I dont remember anything really going wrong with either one of them. The only thing I do remember was the then blower in the fridge icing up burning out the motor to the freezer. The last time I remeber the upright in operation was in 2001 when I turned 30.

Greetings Gsohoover, I love old washers which why I subcribed to your channel. One question on this washer, does the Maytag water valve make any difference in the performance/washing action or filling vs the original water valve?

  • @Gsohoover

Good question, the Maytag water valve allows for more water to flow. It still has the options to do a Warm rinse when chosen. Nothing is lost in functionality.

BTW Gso, would you or your friend Steve happen to have a 70's Hotpoint Lady Executive washer the one with the solid tub and the filter pan that goes over the agitator??? If you do can you do a video of it please??? Thanks for the great video and have a super weekend!!!

Hi Tyler. I still remember the jingle for Kelvinator:. " Frosterator, refrigerator, guaranteed by Kelvinator, for over 50 years a better buy " This could have been the precursor to Calypso in some designer's mind. Nice to have a friend like Steve, and someone like you to help us relive those times.

Interesting that it does multiple short fills when topping-up the wash level after Magic Minute starts. The long overflow before rinse agitation starts seems odd and of questionable effectiveness.

I think the long overflow at the beginning of the rinse was to float soap scum and oils over the top before agitation began and mixed it in. A lot of people still used soaps back in the day.

I actually saw one in use back in the 1960's. That overflow rinse wasn't nearly as dramatic (lower water pressure) but I was astonished how much dog hair and 'scum' went over the rim during that agitation free period.

The agitators this machine shakes and the motor runs like those Maytag Dependable Care, Kenmore Elite and Whirlpool Gold Calypso washing machines. I’m not sure why the water in this machine sprays while it starts to agitate.

🙄 ~ having that plexiglass/acrylic sheet on top is… just the same as the window in the lid = just close the lid, they thought the “window” a deluxe feature, not knowing the spinning agitator was extremely splashy and you won’t be able to see through it for most of the cycle
