Open Whirlpool direct drive washer transmission agitate and spin demo | Mini parts/rag washer

Skip to 1:05 to see it run
Here is a video of the machine actually doing it's job:
• Homemade mini washing ...
People have been commenting non stop on my other video of this transmission asking me to do a drain/spin demo. Here it is, not all that exciting but I did what you said
This transmission came from a machine that was scrapped. It has a bad neutral drain pack, but other than that, it worked fine. I had no use for this gearbox but I didn't want to throw it out, so I turned it into a small washer for shop rags, the dog's toys, and occasionally plastic parts and certain tools.

These washers are brilliant in their simplicity and serviceability. Forced out by government regulation for efficiency and water usage.

I guess I'm the only one but honestly.. despite my love of cool mechanisms like this, it's terribly inefficient - sliding forces, small pinion gear, everything engaged regardless of mode... this transmission has to be wasting at least 60% of the energy that goes into it as friction/heat... which, wouldn't expect any better from an American company lol.... energy is cheap, and it's the boomers job to use it all up before the younger generation gets to use any in their fancy LG direct drive front loaders! Those damn zoomers could run their machines for centuries on that energy, better burn it all up in our victorian era top-load clothes-shredders. lol

The fact that you took it apart to find the problem is admirable in itself. Thoroughly agree with other comments on serviceability and longevity. Happy New Year 🎉 '24.

Thank you, you saved me a bunch of time trying to diagnose my washer issues. This is the only video I could find to show the shaft isn’t supposed to spin while in the spin cycle. My brain was spun (hehe) trying to figure out what was going on with my transmission. Nothing, it was perfect.

Why didn't I think of this. I have at times wondered how would a person know that the problem is not the actual transmission knowing that it is not the clutch or the coupler. I didn't know how to test the transmission so I threw the whole washer away. symptom? The motor will run and nothing else would move. The coupler was solidand the brake assmbly was tight, wasn't slipping or anything.

God dam it, which way the motor turns for spin? I didn't catch it. The basket turns clockwise when it spins to my knowledge. Whatabout the motor?

@@_AmTeC_ When I turn that plastic coupler (using my fingers )on the shaft of the transmission with the motor out clockwise, it grabs. But when I turn it left ( counterclockwise) it spins freely. The washer does everything but it won't spin. So I thought maybe the spin happens when the motor turns counterclockwise so there is no grabbing/engaging happening in the transmission. Confusing I guess. { if the spin happens due to the brake pads being good and the agitation has no relationship to the pads, then I guess the pads maybe bad. It is not clear to me. But if the motor turns one way at all times, that won't make sense. Perhaps in the agitation mode the motor turns counterclockwise and so the pads does not come into the picture. But counterclockwise that coupler seems to turn awfully free. I guess I have to just take it out and find out, just 3 bolts involved as everything else is out]

Had a bad clutch/brake or whatever they want to call it on this one. I had another kenmore that the clutch was good, it was tight but the dang thing didn't do anything and it wasn't the motor or the coupler either. I tossed it. I got this machine for $10. I could have saved the clutch from the other I guess. I ordered the clutch at amazon for around $14.

I hope someone can help me. I have a washer that I am unable to turn the coupler on the transmission clockwise it will only turn counter clockwise BUT with motor and transmission out of washer both spin freely. Since I am currently unemployed I have to determine if its the transmission or something like the brakes dragging or basket drive assembly. i noticed the cam has no play outside the washer but while turning the basket drive assembly counterclockwise to get it back up into the washer it is difficult maybe its supposed to be? Also once in the washer there is alot of play in cam. One other thing I noticed was once the transmission was in the coupler would spin clockwise a little bit but not enough to turn the tub then I would hear a click and it wouldnt turn anymore and it never turned far enough for the tub to spin. Is that click something locking up with the brakes or in the transmission? i disassembled the brakes took of the spring to make sure they move freely. There was no play in the brakes so they seem okay to someone who doesnt know what they are supposed to feel like. Also we replaced the transmission fluid with 90 wt. Ugh someone please help we have been watching videos and searching the internet for a week. We replaced the capacitor before figuring out it was bound up somehow. thanks in advance for any help you can give.
