I have been using the Voitlander 28mm f/2 on my X-Pro2 and for me, this the perfect focal length. It splits the difference between the 23mm and the 35mm lenses. It works well for Street photography and is an excellent general purpose lens.

Thanks for noting that almost every Fujifilm lens has a different filter size, which is a real problem for photographers who use screw-in filters.

love your videos! I'm back in the Fuji system with the XT4. I have the 33 1.4 fujilux and to complement that I just picked up the amazing viltrox 13mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.4.

Hello! Can you tell pls, if you using OVF, how much field of view will be "eaten" by the body of the new 23mm f1.4? Is it combination usable at all?

Recently picked up the 18 f/1.4 and it's amaaaazing. Like you mentioned I do wish the aperture ring was stiffer. Something like the 35 f/2. I think that has the perfect amount of resistance.

Congrats on the XF18mm f/1.4, it's a beautiful lens!! I also feel the Fujicrons had the right amount of resistance. Hopefully Fujifilm can have a de-click feature for future lenses for hybrid shooters, but also make the clicks more distinct.

Great video, thats what I was really looking for as I am in the market for a f1.4 for a short film. So, I can only buy ONE, and it will be to use in interviews of people sitting between 1 and 3 meters from the camera, and in low light, video only... which one to get? I'm thinking 33mm... please help, need to buy asap!

Your predictions were very spot on ;) seeing the X-H2s and X-H2 now in 2022. And these lenses do indeed pair up nicer to the new bodies. But I am stubborn and still miss the clutch system 😅keeping my 16mm f/1.4

Thanks for the clarification about that optical viewfinder. I am still considering an X-Pro3 purchase and assumed that when I used my 16mm f/1.4 lens that I'd have no alternative to the EVF, which I am led to believe is a significant upgrade on that of my X-Pro1. But anyway, there's a work around to the problem and at least my (old) 23mm f/1.4 will function with either option. Great video - the way you had those three beautiful new lenses laid out made them look like they belong in a very expensive box set.

Hi Michael, actually with the XF16mm and with your eyes right up to the viewfinder, you can see to the edge of the framing, but only at medium to far distances. Like the XF18, when you get closer, the parallax is too great and you won't get accurate framing. But it's possible!!

Great Video, I got the 33mm and love it. The 18mm looks amazing also.

Congrats on the XF33mm. As much as I talk about which lens to get, I really want all three for different reasons. But if I want two, I think the XF18mm and XF33mm is a no brainer, if you get two….. but I know many don’t like the XF18mm field of view, which is totally understandable. Thanks for commenting!

Fantastic review here📸👌😎 It’s a tough choice deciding which focal length 1.4 lenses to buy so I just pre ordered every new 1.4 lens!!! I just haven’t told the wife the price of these new premium lenses 😵‍💫🤭😜

I have the 33 f1.4. It is excellent optically, but I wish the field of view was a bit wider.

Already have the 16 1.4 & 35 1.4 and love the rendering on both. Will wait for the new 56 1.2 Right now have the TTartisan 50 1.2 MF to play with until then.

You could put a stepdown ring on the 18mm to fit the same filters. I did that so my 50f2 had the same thread as the 35f1.4 and 18f2. Worked great.

I'm really tied between 23mm and 33mm for a future purchase... I already own the 16mm 1,4 and 35mm f2. The 33m f1,4 would replace my f2, because it's very bad for video, the 23mm would be the middle ground between 16mm and 35mm... I also really like the 23mm focal length for video's as a general purpose prime. But I would also like the 33m f1,4 for better bokeh and colors for portraits and details, and it's my most-used focal length when shooting interviews with my 18-55mm. Which would be the first lens you would suggest me to add to my collection?

Great video! I got my hands on both the 18mmf1.4 and the 33mmf1.4 and they fully fit my needs. Still hoping for the successor of the 56mmf1.2 though, had to part ways with it because of the autofocus / softness Would love to meet up when you are in Tokyo and shoot! Cheers

I would like all of these lenses because they are seriously all amazing everything has been improved and brought to 2022 standards. I only had budget for one so I got the 23mm, also I already have the fuji 35 f2, and the viltrox 13mm f1.4 which are also really good lenses and close to the 33 and 18mm focal length enough for me.

Super good, informative video! I have both 35's, the 56 and the older 18. I'm a little obsessed with the 33 1.4. I've seen so many wonderful photographs with it. I love that focal length but they're all so good and destined to be classic in their own way.

I'm looking at the new XF18mm and XF33 myself..... I love the XF23mm, but I can't justify having all three.... 1 will usually stay home, which will be the XF23mm

I have the 18mm 1.4 right now. I plan on getting the 56mm when it’s released next year. The 23 is covered with my x100 and I have the 35mm 1.4 for the 50mm equiv

Oh man you are already set and ready for the future. Yes I predict an update of the XF56mm f/1.2 R within 6-8 months, but I also hope the XF18mm f/2 R is updated.

May I ask which would you prefer between 18mm and 23 mm. which one is shaper and has less chromatic aberration or distortion？ thank you

I went with the 23mm. It's so sharp that my 26mp sensor is a bottleneck lol. I think the 18mm has the best center sharpness but the 23mm's corners are stunning.

you don't feel a huge forward weight on those big lenses on the xpro3? it doesnt bother you?

Of the new 3 the 23mm f1.4 is the one that makes sense for me to add at some point my 23mm f2 is a little surplus to requirements with me having the X100F also . I've got a lot of options both in my cameras, ( the older models that are bargains ), and prime lenses but my favoured city street bag is maybe a bit different to many. XF10 (or X70) - 18mm small, light and discrete for unnoticed street candids, public transport etc ), X-100F - 23mm in the hand street walking , X-E3 + 50mm F2 & 35mm f1.4 for closer + lowlight and subject isolation.. Only 1 lens change typically when light closes in and I find the F and X-E3 similar to control custom button and dial wise. Small, fast and quite a lightweight ready set up for 3 cameras plus 2 changeable lenses. The 23mm f1.4 will likely offer a better 1 camera 1 lens sole carry low light option, the only issue I can see is size and balance wise it looks more suited to my X-Pro 2 as opposed to the X-E3. As always great to see Fuji giving us more options and improving their lens range. I don't get excited by their newer camera releases as I'm stills only, and the 24mp models or earlier 16mp combined with the newer f2's function as I need.

Had the 18 and returned it. Found that I didn't like how distant the backgrounds would end up. Maybe I just got too used to the look of the 35? Either way, I think I'm going to grab the 33 when it's available (I loved the 35 f1.4 but really need that WR).

Thanks for sharing your experience. The 18mm takes some getting use to. You have to get closer to your subject. Hopefully you'll enjoy the 33mm more as it's closer to the 35mm

​@@bigheadtaco It does for sure! I did like how nice subjects came out with the 18mm. In cities it captured so much in frame too! I loved it when going to a metro area. But when I wanted to grab a pic of someone with mountains or buildings in the distance as part of the background... They just looked so... small and insignificant... I agree with what you said though, 33 and 18 would be a nice combo to take (but $$$).

About to order the 18mm and 33mm f1.4 lenses to go with my new X-Pro 3 I got a few days ago.

I wrap a silicone wrist band to some of my lens aperture rings and it prevents it from moving. It’s annoying.

Great Video, I got the 18mm and love it. The 33mm looks amazing also. 😅 Take a look at Fujifilms MTF charts, the 18 is in a different league. May get the 23 or 33 down the road too.. dunno. Already have the 23 F2 and rhe 35 1.4..

Ya I saw the MTF chart, it’s crazy. I did critical testing between the XF16 and XF18. Before everyone was saying the XF16mm f/1.4 was the sharpest Fujifilm lens, but the XF18mm was clearly sharper to me!!

Seriously tempting me with the 23mm 1.4 ! even though I’ve the Fujicron 23mm f2 just the obvious size and weight difference which I’d have to see on my Xpro2 but would suit my XH1.Thanks for the informative upload as per usual! 😃 🇬🇧 🇨🇦

Thanks for watching! I also love the XF23mm f/2 for its size and weight, and even love it's quirky optics. It's a big decision to move up to the XF23mm f/1.4 for just one stop more light, although the bokeh is amazing. Also close focus is really nice... but AF on the XF23mm f/2 R is slightly faster...

Thanks Ken. Yes Fuji x Sony AF is mostly a software issue since Sony makes the sensors for Fujifilm. I think it's also a processor issue, since the difference between the older X Processor Pro and X Processor IV was significant. So hopefully with hardware, processor and software, the next generation Fujifilm AF should be improved.

@bigheadtaco I have another question… Why would you not consider 50mm F1.0 a Fujilux?

I am torn between getting the XF16mm f1.4 or the XF18mm f1.4... The widest prime I have is the Samyang 12mm, next would be the 23mm F2. I thought 16mm would for sure be my next lens but the new 18 definitely gives me serious pause. All that rambling to say, love your informative but accessible videos! Thanks for showing us the new glass. ✌️

I have both the 16mm 1.4 and the 18mm 1.4. Unless you do a lot of really close focus stuff my choice is the 18mm. It’s not enough of a difference in close focus to notice unless you’re always getting super close and it’s your main reason to buy the lens. My bag currently is almost guaranteed to have the 18mm 1.4 on camera, and the 56mm tagging along. I haven’t used the 16mm much at all after buying the 18mm. If I really want to be close I’ve got the 80mm too and they are all 62mm filters.

Nice trio of lenses, I'm looking to make them move to primes most likely the Sigma trio 16mm, 30mm and 56mm. LOL I remember some of my film camera lenses has those aperture ring locks, My Canon EF 18-135 had a lock to keep the lens from creeping out when not in use. I like how lenses lenses end up in threes or trios, when I was a Canon user it was usually the 16-35, 24-70 (still a great lens IMO) and the 70-200 aka the Canon trinity, Nikon users have theirs too. I know a lot of Sony users like the 16mm length to use as an everyday lens. If I was a Fuji user that 18 and 23 would definitely be in my bag.

Minolta was a weird one, but I’d say their best primes under 100mm were the 28mm f/2, 35mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4. No NOCT lenses for the AF A-mount. Sigma’s 16mm, 30mm and 56mm would make a great trio as well!! Thanks for your thoughts!

I have a new fujinon 33mm and am very happy with it. Sometimes I need wider and thinking to purchase 18mm.

if it's only slightly wider, then maybe you'll enjoy the 23mm? It's probably best to test, even if it's just on a zoom lens that has a range between all three focal lengths 👍🏼

nice silent clicks :D not exactly sure about Nikon but the newer lens does feel like to be more similar like the Nikon prime lens looking very similar in size when put next to each other, you think in the future that fuji will try to keep the filter tread to be the same for all lens in the future? Im reminding myself that this is not a Pokemon game where we need to "catch them all" haha - that certain photographers after a while only use one lens knowing its "their" focal length. I do question myself whether I should use the f2 and only until I know my focal length is when I buy in to the f1.4. if doing video and my next lens should be the 16-55 to get as many useful focal length as possible. (own/borrowing a 35mm f1.4 good enough for portrait and maybe cheaper/affordable to buy that option instead of the newer lens - for video might be a talking head interview on a tripod that does not need AF and so a lock focus will do fine with the 35, and might as well stop down to f2.8 to keep it consistent with the 16-55 on the other camera) like the special qualities when taking photos with the 35mm f1.4 - I feel I just "want" (not need) the 56mm f1.2 and it's low light capabilities, while during the day time use the f2 lens. so my lists are Low light Video AF Size/price going together if for video will I or anyone be using f1.4 really and MAYBE the f2 lens is good enough - added being cheaper and smaller. SO maybe its a 16-55 f2.8 & maybe 23mm f2 then later discover what low light lens I should get OR its that portrait lens that will give nice bokeh and doubles as a great low light lens to use (56mm f1.2) though what lens do you use Take? If i remember you use the 18mm for liking the 28mm focal length if i remember?

I have the 18 and 33 f1.4, both give incredible results and the build quality really is premium. I didn't go X-pro3 because of the changes to the ovf and removal of the buttons, the 18 f1.4 works great with the X-pro2 viewfinder. I hope Fujifilm considers these points in the design process of the X-pro4

Oh boy, XF18mm f/1.4 and the X-Pro2 is a great combination with the older OVF. I hope they bring it back with the X-Pro4. And XF18mm and XF33mm is a great combination. I think the decision of which lens to pick is easier, versus trying to pick between 18 and 23 or 23 and 35mm.

Yes I agree, I skipped the X-Pro 3 because of those reasons, the camera didn't seem as practical for several reasons, so switched to the X-T3 instead.

@@stephenelliott7071 I love everything about the X-Pro3 except for the OVF, lack of HDMI out (I can use as webcam), and no front dial push in button feature. Hopefully the X-Pro4 can address these issues. I actually really like the reverse LCD screen. I hope they keep that, but my guess is that it's gone for the next version.

@@bigheadtaco I'm guessing similar, they were bold in their choices with the X-Pro3 but got some critisism. At heart I'm not really a fan of the X-T3/4 faux DSLR Mirror Hump and prefer a rangefinder-like system with the viewfinder to the side (so one eye is always on the action). The newer sensor in the X-T3/Pro and now XT-4 is a major step up though over the X-Pro2 IMO - certainly in low light. It was just the number of changes in the X-Pro3 made it less practical, so went with X-T3.

@@stephenelliott7071 X-T3 was a game-changer camera. Many of my Panasonic GH video shooters switched over because of the X-T3. I just wish they gave it the latest firmware. Oh well...

I can't believe people are actually saying these lenses are too big lol the 23mm is by far the smallest lens i have for my fuji. My other lenses include, Fujinon 16-80mm and 70-300mm, on adapter Nikkor 50mm AI-s, and 80mm AI-s. all what I would consider a normal size lens, but massive in comparison to the ones featured in this video

Can you make a video that focuses on comparing the 33mm f1.4 with the 35mm f1.4 in terms of bokeh character with many side by side comparison pictures in Lightroom? Such a video is missing on KZread

I love the Fujicrons for light, compact and fast focus. Up to this point I’ve only had Fujicrons. I do want a Fujilux though, and I think the XF18mm f/1.4 has my name all over it :-)

I hope they do a 56/1.2 in this series of lenses

I have none of those. I’m a zoomer. 10-24, 16-55, 50-140. Only body right now X-S10. Primes Tokina 33 and Fuji 27. Was thinking of 18 f2 but the 1.4 looks nice. Won’t be buying anything now though. Waiting to see where Fuji is headed. So far their current direction has been disappointing to me. I think the X-T3 was the best Fuji camera I had ever owned. Still would have it today if it had IBIS. I have been waiting for a stacked sensor for an APSC camera for a long time. Don’t know why Sony hasn’t done it. Maybe cost?

I have the XF10-24mm as well, it's my workhorse for travel photography and videography, and my new XF16-80mm, which I bought during the pandemic so I haven't had a chance to use it outside of a studio setting much. I had the XF35mm f/2 R WR, but I want a fast f/1.4 one. I too am looking at either the XF18 or XF33.. X-T3 is a great design camera. I hope they don't kill the form factor...

Thanks! I like something wide-ish and something in the 50-56 range (28 and 75/85 FF). The 33 (50 FF) if the 56 is too long. Yes, but I usually trade-in at my local Camera Store so pre-order wasn't a practical option; like I did with the 16 1.4 for the 18.

Great video, for me if I could only choose 2 lenses, I would get the 18mm f1.4 and the 50mm f1.0 with these two focal lengths i could pretty much shoot from landscape to portrait even a full wedding.

Agree with this. Hoping 18 + 56 (in my case) covers my weddings, with my 50-140 for ceremony. Makes me a little nervous not having anything 23/35 😅

@@dlovisuals Me too. I wrote an article on Fujilove Magazine about using the XF18mm f/1.4 R LM WR on the compact X-S10 as a economy Leica Q2. Obviously these are completely different types of cameras at different price points, but in the end, I wanted a fast 28mm equiv field of view lens with stabilization, and the Fujifilm combination didn’t disappoint :-)

Just got the 16 1.4 and the 56 1.2

One aspect to point out that was not included in your overview is the Weather Resistant (WR) aspect of the new 18, 23 and 33 (and new 50 f 1). With the X-Pro 3 and XT-4 this is a great feature because you end up with a complete WR system where with the 16, 35 and 56 you don't have a WR system. WR matters outside a studio or for outdoor shooting.

Let me buy your X100F! Been looking for the brown version for the longest time…

33, hands down… but then I like this FL. The 16mm f1.4 is my wide go-to.

as for optical quality 18 1.4 is the best of three hands down, then it depends by the favorite focal.

I think optically the 18mm would have been the most difficult to design due to the amount of light that has to be bent in and then corrected back out, and yes it’s spectacular. It’s also my fav field of view :-)

I went to a Fuji event yesterday and traded “up” to the WR versions of the 27 and the 10-24. The 23 isn’t in yet and may not be until next year. I like the current 23 1.4 because it is more “environmental”, but not as wide as the 18.. I have the 10-24 for that. Thanks BHT for all of your insight!!!!

Oh nice trade up. I'll keep using my XF10-24mm until it breaks.... but would love that WR.

In my 35mm film days, I shot a Nikon SLR with the following lenses: 24mm f/2 35mm f/1.4 85mm f/1.4 I also shot a Leica M6 with the following lenses: 21mm f/1.4 Summilux 35mm f/1.4 Zeiss Distagon 90mm f/2 Summicron When I started shooting APS-C digital, I bought a Fuji X-Pro1 with the following lenses: 16mm f/1.4 Fuji 23mm f/1.4 Fuji 56mm f/1.2 Fuji If I felt the need to buy one of the lenses in this video, I would buy the 23mm f/1.4 in order to gain the weather resistance feature.

I've decided to sell my 35mm f2 and get the new 33mm 1.4! :) Eventually I'd like to get the 18mm 1.4.

watching this comparison after the XT5 news... think the XF18 is the one to get. can always crop down with the XT5's 40 plus I feel like the wider the lens, the longer shutter speed you can do in low light and lower the iso more.

currently have the 23 1.4 (older model), 56 1.2 and 16 1.4...the 23 mainly stays at home when I use my XT3 as my webcam in a teleprompter. It's wide enough for me not to need to back up, and not too wide to see the teleprompter frames. 16 and 56 goes in my bag as they are both my favourite for video and photo. I just want a new body (something videocentric).

Nice lenses! How is the focus of the older XF23mm f/1.4 on the X-T3? I assume it's pretty good with the X Processor 4. Just wait until January-March 2022 for X-H2..... or at least that's my prediction of timing.....

@@bigheadtaco focuses quick and accurate, loving the clutch manual/auto-focus on the lens itself. Only downside video wise is that the motor is audible if using the camera's internal mic.

The old 35 f/1.4 is the all time best. ❤❤❤

PLEASE FUJI WE NEED A NEW 18mm F2! My main lens is the 18mm f2, as an X-Pro2 shooter I really wish for a Mk2 of the 18mm f2. The current version of this lens wasn't very good to begin with, but now so many years after, it is not holding up very well against other brands offerings (or own fuji's offerings). The 18mm 1.4 is a welcomed addition but is so large in the X-Pro2 I am willing to sacrifice the 1.4 aperture for the smaller size. I was thinking whether to upgrade to an X-Pro3 or not, but with the current prices of full-frame cameras (and they tiny sizes) and the glass other mirrorless are offering... I just don't now, I really love fuji but I really wish there was a new 18mm f2 so my decision was easier to stay in the Fuji X system

100% agreed. I love the 18mm but not the f/2 lens. It needs to be officially a Fujicron with a stepping motor and WR. Let's be patient.... although it has been almost 10 years :-)

What's wrong with the 18mmf2? Focuses great on my XS10. I photograph with headphones so I don't care about the sound. Great vintage rendering instead of boring modern sharpness. Lovely lens with its own soul. I actually prefer it to my 16mm1.4 and 23mmf2

The 23mm f2 on my X100V is the best for me.

Fuji should make an XF69mmF1.4 classic 105mm fashion portrait lens. Perhaps Keanu "69 dude!" Reeves could promote it. Plus, launch it with a new small flash.

Very well explained with all the options available right now from Fujifilm and why you might choose a over b, we're spoiled so thank you Fujifilm. As for the 18 and filters, a cheap step down ring from 62 to 58 (to match the other 58mm threads) can be used without vignetting problems.

We are spoiled. I have both step up and step down rings, but if you want to use the square lens hood at the same time, it might cause a problem. I know, first world problems to just buy an extra set of filters if you want to use the sexy square metal lens hoods :-)

Yes, one of the reasons I switched from Canon to Fuji was Fujifilm's attention to producing quality glass in a smaller package. Lens hoods, not so much - far too large and mostly plastic ;) I'm currently experimenting with a UV Filter and step down rings to produce a small lens hood in-effect. Personally I'm looking to protect the front element of a lens, keep rain droplets off the lens and provide some shade without making the lens too large.

The 18mm 1.4 would be nice but the way I see it, the 16 1.4 and 56 1.2 can be bought together used for the price of the 18 new. So Im thinking: 16 1.4 (used) + 23 1.4 + 33 1.4 + 56 1.2 (used). Then if I really prefer one between the 23 and 33 I can sell the other. Lol!

Ha ha, smart strategy. You can definitely find the 16mm f/1.4 used for a good price. I don't see too many 56mm used though, but if you're patient, you could probably find one. I guess you're skipping the 18mm? As I said, it will be the least popular focal length, but I think it will still sell well.

@@bigheadtaco yep skipping the 18 for now. Maybe sometime in the future tho. Most of my wide shots are pics of people so the 23mm has been my go to. I have a red enhancer filter that will fit the 67mm filter thread on the 16 1.4, so that will be interesting for sunsets 😜. Has Fuji confirmed that the 18 mm 1.4 can also a accommodate higher resolution sensors in the future? I thought that was just the new 23 and 33

@@lewis7394 yes the new XF18mm is part of the new family of lenses for future higher resolution sensors, which also includes the new XF23mm and XF33mm. The optical design is also very similar, as well as the ergonomics and aesthetics, which distinguish them from the previous generation design.

@@bigheadtaco just got my new 23 1.4 after preordering many months ago. It is perfect. Im selling my 16 1.4 and 33 1.4 now! The new 23 1.4 and the 56 1.2 plus a zoom for traveling are all that is needed!

I have the 23f1.4 & 56f1.2 and thinking to buy either the 18mm or the 33mm and I can't buy both 😅. before I have a 16mm f1.4 and sold it and feel regrets stupid about it.

Just get all of them. They will go up like the leica lenses.

Lenses are coming, by the end of 2023 you will be able to buy one.I'm still waiting to see if 27mm f2.8 or 70-300 is gone be available at all. Fujifilm should stop releasing gear that they are not able to deliver same is with cash back promotions....they give cash back for products which are nowhere available.Well I have to wait for the 27 and 23 f1.4.

Those 0.95 lenses don't have autofocus??

Also btw these 1.4 lenses are F2 equivalent in FF including in light gathering. DPReview published a complete breakdown demonstrating this. It’s not a huge deal though since every mfr rates ISO differently. Obviously iPhones have 1.8 lenses but given their tiny sensors they don’t hold a candle to FF 1.8 for a given exposure time. Check it out :)

thanks for the heads up. I know the argument but I don’t fully agree when all things are equal, which they rarely are. I use the exposure as my guide, and when I use an f/1.4 lens, then the shutter speed is based on that plus ISO. But again, ISO is also not the same across the board.

Exposure at 1.4 is the same for apsc and ff. The DOF is different.

Not really, light gathering is the same as FF 1.4, just not DOF.

F1.4 is 1.4 regardless of sensor size when it comes to light gathering. Handheld light meters don't have different settings for each sensor size

I made the mistake of buying a retro camera strap that you said was great and returned it the next day because it wasn’t all that great with being more of a pain. The older lens unfortunately are made to a higher quality not to knock Thailand but there is a real different next to Japanese made glass with knowing from past experiences that your proving junk and you know it. Anyone who has be doing photography for as long as I have knowns that new is normal not better. It’s just new and sharing. If you where not trying to get new sponsorship from FujiFilm and told us what you really think the videos would be much better then this sales pitch you endlessly do. It’s getting really boring Camera Buddy as it’s reddy 32 at its worst.

I would venture to say that people that say that these lens are going as big as full frame don't shoot with both, over the years I have been able to aquire both full frame, APSC and 4/3 camera bodies with both zooms and prime glass. No matter the format, fast glass will always be larger, I have Pentax full frame and APSC, Panasonic full frame and 4/3,Fujifilm APSC and Olympus 4/3 on average the full frame Pentax & Panasonic glass is larger and heavier than the APSC equivalent.
