Which are the best Fujifilm prime lenses: XF F1.4 vs F2 (18mm, 23mm and 35mm)

Ғылым және технология

Fujifilm's X-mount gives the option of F1.4 or F2 primes in a number of focal lengths. Chris and Jordan risk physical injury to compare the 18mm, 23mm and 35mm XF prime lenses, to see which is the better buy at each focal length.

I’ve had all of these incl. the 16 and 50/56mm options. I do agree with your choices for the 18 and 23 (resp. the 1.4 and the 2). For the 35 I would take the f2 as a generic lens, but the f1.4 for nice stills with a vintage look. As for the 16, the f2.8 is quite mediocre. Whenever you can, take the f1.4. The 50/2 is a great little lens and much underappreciated. The 56/1.2 and now the 50/1 get all the attention, but if you look for a compact travel lens that can double as a nice portrait lens, take the 50/2. I’ve sold almost all Fuji gear when moving to Nikon Z, but I kept the X-Pro2 with the 23, the 35 and the 50 all f2s. A really nice compact travel kit with sufficient image quality.

Yikes, now that's dedication! Also just to chime in as a Fuji user who shoots professionally, all those F1.4 lenses look and feel nicer, but they almost universally struggle with focus tracking and focusing in low light. The equivalent Viltrox prime lenses are generally much better in that regard, but still leave a little to be desired in terms of wide-open image quality -- but then so do some of the Fujis, except the Viltrox lenses cost half as much (or less), so it's easier to stomach. Bottom line is that Fuji really needs to update those older lens designs, both in terms optics and focusing systems, as their newer bodies (X-T3, 4, etc.) outstrip the resolution and focusing abilities and it shows, especially when compared to the much better (and more expensive...) Fuji zooms.

"Never ever confuse sharp with good, or you will end up shaving with an ice cream cone and licking a razor blade." - Bill Pierce I have or have had almost all of the lenses that Fuji has made for the X series. There really aren't any 'bad' lenses in the bunch, but the XF35/1.4 is hands down the "best" lens Fuji has ever made thus far. (The XF18/2 is a close second.) No. They aren't the 'sharpest' nor 'fastest focus', but they have a distinct image signature that is very difficult to put into words. :) Fun video either way and I'm sorry you stabbed your foot.

Sorry to hear about your foot. I have two of the lenses that were reviewed - the 16MM F2 and the 35MM F2. I bought the 16MM F2 when i purchased my first Fujifilm camera (an X-E1). Back then focusing speed wasn't great so going back to photo quality was the main issue. In 2019 i bought an X-H1 and then realized all the same issue with the 16mm F2 that you guys have stated. Image quality is best when stopped down and focusing speed is not good. I bought a ton of new lenses to max the camera out including the 35mm F2. Honestly - Its a lens that never leaves anyone of my cameras. It does almost everything well and i enjoy the results.

The 23mm f2 is something special. For the price, $449 USD, it’s a really difficult lens to beat regardless of brand or system. Solid WR, sharp all the way around while still having some character, the focusing is FAST, and the size is small without being too small. A great one lens for a one body set up

Gotta say, I love the quantity of Fuji videos recently! xD I have the 35mm f/2 and the only complaint I've ever managed to have about it is that it's pretty soft at f/2 when using its minimum focusing distance, but it's fixed by either focusing from a little further away or stopping down, so it's never really entirely been a problem. Also, I hope your foot gets better soon, Chris! That sounded like a pretty nasty wound >.

I don't know about the other focal lengths, but for ~35mm the Viltrox is a really great option having the wider aperture of the XF 1.4 and the quiet and fast AF of the XF 2. It's well-build (but not officially WR), still sharp wide open and cost half as much as Fuji's F1.4. Since it's a bit bigger and ca. 110g heavier, it might not be the best choice for smaller cameras (like X-E4), though, but it feels just great on an X-T2. Speedy recovery, Chris!

The best thing about the 35 1.4 is that it has amazing "3D pop" compared to the f2 version. Also I actually suspect you might have a bad sample since mine seems sharper, at least on par with my 56 1.2.

  • @russwright

I got the 35 1.4 years ago and sold it because it wasn't sharp and the focusing on it was slow. Some say it is a magical lens but I have no desire for a vintage look - been there, done that, when vintage was current days. I want a sharp, good performing lens. As soon as the 35 f2.0 came out I got it and couldn't be happier. Much nicer size (to fit in my bag while on travel, for example), focuses quickly and, as a bonus, is weather sealed. Also, the 23 1.4 is one of my favorite lenses (sorry Chris, 35mm equiv rocks. Love my X100 as well). Sharp and fast enough focus but do wish it had WR. Fuji sure makes some nice glass.

An interesting review. My experience: I greatly prefer the 35/1.4 over the f2 version. I also enjoy the metal lens shade. I don't mind the aperture chatter or slower focusing speed. The 23/1.4 is a superb lens and I loved the focus clutch. Sadly, the plastic lens shade is an abomination for such a high quality lens. I love my 18/2 and the metal lens shade. I bought the 35 and 18mm lenses along with the X-Pro 1 when it was first issued. Still going strong and I don't need quicker focus or weather sealing. I'm delighted with my Fujifilm gear and have learned to live with the pros & cons (which all gear has).

Loving all the recent Fuji coverage. I went with 18mm f1.4 - and got the new 27mm f2.8 for a pancake option as it is smaller and sharper than the 18 f2. I owned both 23s but kept the f1.4 for the much better performance up close wide open. However, I suspect between the 18mm f1.4 and 27mm f2.8 it’s become redundant and I’ll likely sell it soon. I owned both 35s but keep the f2 because it’s noticeably nicer to use (quiet, WR, clicky aperture ring) and sharper (with more contrast). Be good to include 16mm f1.4 vs f2.8 and 56mm f1.2 and f2. I went with the 16mm f1.4 but still have both the 56mm and 50mm as they are very close optically and hard to identify a clear winner.

I love the 23mm f1.4 for video. Those who are high on manual focusing 23mm f1.4 is the lens to buy. It won't disappoint you.

Love your guys' videos and the forums are pretty much the only place I look when making decisions.. the 18mm f2 can be had for @$200 on ebay (I got a beautiful copy for 199) and being that I don't shoot wide that often, I can't see spending 4 or 5x as much for the 16 or 18 1.4 unless I win the lottery.. even if I had one of the faster lenses, I would hold onto the f2 because it's so small you can fit it in your pocket.. I can shoot almost anything I need to with the 35mm (50mm fov) and still bring along the 18 in case I need something wider.. The XF35 f2 is WONDERFUL.. I really didn't think I would be happy with f2... but because I already had the very 'fun to focus' 56mm, I decided to sacrifice 'character' and bokeh for faster, more accurate focusing for the 35.. I found a used copy for @$250 and I'm really glad I bought it.. the XF35 f2 is an absolute gem.. LOVE LOVE LOVE this lens and if you get in close on your subject it has really nice bokeh.. I don't really have a need for a 23mm, which won't stop me from eventually buying one, and having the 18+35 f2, I'll probably go for the Viltrox 1.4 to have the extra stop of light and a good reason to explain to my wife why I need another lens

I've gone through a lot of photography equipment and what I miss the most is the Fuji 35mm f1.4. Focus is slow as hell and not the sharpest but it just had a unique look that I always loved having in my pictures.

35f1.4 is slow but not that slow. I'm more than fine with its af. Love f1.4 version. F2 version is boring.

The 1.4 has some depth/3D pop that the f2 version just can't really replicate from what I've seen. So the 1.4 is better if you don't need fast AF or weather sealing.

My experience from having over 50 lenses in M43, APSC and FF formats is this. F2 will give acceptable OOF Bokeh on a FF camera. That should be F1.8 or faster on M43 and APSC. Of course I usually go a half stop faster lens just to make sure I get sharp results at max aperture. An f1.4 usually needs to be stopped down to F1.8 for crisp sharpness.

Hope you get well soon, that piece of metal looks hella dangerous!!! Is it meant to stop skateboarders? Thanks for this video. I recently bought the 35mm f1.4 eventhough I have shot the 35mm f2 as my first fuji lens for the last two years. Found it used for a good price and I love it already. Gonna keep the f2 around for rainy weather shooting.

I’ll watch this later but Fujifilm is updating all three ancient 1.4s with Mark II versions this year and next year. the 33 1.4 will come first. i’ve owned 4-5 copies of each of these six lenses, both 1.4s and the f2s. and 3 copies of the 90. they’re all great. overall the 35 1.4 is my all time favorite.

I own almost all the Fuji fast lenses and some slower Fuji primes & the 80mm f2.8 is by far the sharpest lens I have ever used. The 35 f2 is soft at f2 & close focusing compared to the f1.4 version, the 16mm 1.4 is excellent in every way but a weird focal length. The 14mm is stellar but at f2.8 its just not fast enough for astro.

You didn't mention anything about video performance, I do both and I heard that the older lens has noisy autofocus motor. For 35mm is the XF35 f2 WR a good choice? What about image stabilisation? Fuji is funny that v few lenses have OIS - would that present a problem for video (or doesn't matter if I used a gimbo most of the time?)
