Fujifilm 33mm & 18mm f1.4 Long Term Review

Ғылым және технология

It's been over a year since I started using the new f1.4 primes. In this video I talk about how they have held up and if they are still worth it.

cheers Roman! just received my 18 this weekend and I'm excited to use it!! i have had the 33 for over a year now and it is easily my favorite lens. I've paired them up with my 50-140 and honestly there isn't anything i cant shoot with this set up.

Nice review. I have owned both the 18mm and 33mm lenses and they are fantastic. In the end I decided to sell both and purchase the new 23mm f/1.4 LM WR as I find I can compose similarly styled images by "zooming with my feet". With an X-T5 I can also comfortably crop into the super sharp 23mm images to get an effective 50mm FOV equivalent while retaining decent quality. I used the remaining money to purchase the XF 35mm f/1.4 and Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 to complement the 23mm. The 13mm lens is great for wide landscape/architectural shots and tight indoor spaces. The 35mm f/1.4 is simply unbeatable for its size and weight considering how fast it is. On the X-T5 the AF works great (just a touch slower than the new LM lenses in my experience, but definitely noisier), and I was pleasantly surprised by its performance on the new 40MP sensor (even wide open, the center sharpness is great).

I’m new to Fuji and I recently bought the newer 23mm and the xt5. Beautiful combo but I also need something wider. I was considering buying the newer 18mm as well but maybe the field of view is too similar? Did you consider the Fuji 14mm instead of the Viltrox?

But by 'zooming with your feet' on the 23mm you will introduce distortion in the lines of the images. And even if you crop in to get 50mm FOV, I doubt you will get the same amount of bokeh as from an actual 33mm (50mm FF equi) lens.

I thought about the 23mm and "zooming with feet", but then realised that zooming with feet is only good for subjects that are within 10 metres. Almost does nothing for landscapes! I settled for the 18mm 1.4 & 35mm 1.4

I bought the 18mm f/1.4 recently and absolutely love it. It’s super sharp and I appreciate the WR since I like to shoot outside in the winter a lot. Love how it handles on my X-T3 body too. I also have both the 35mm f/2 and the older 35mm f/1.4 but I’m thinking about selling them and buying the 33mm f/1.4 since the 18mm impresses so much.

Hi Roman! Thanks for this simple but thorough overview of these 2 lenses. Very, very helpful! I love Fuji lenses, but my one complaint on most is, as you noticed, the inconsistency of stiffness of aperture ring on different lenses is very frustrating. Some are just right, but most are way to loose and easy to move unintentionally.

Great review and breakdown. I have a 33mm on the way from MPB (along with a 70-300) and really looking forward to using it. My thought process was similar to what you laid out, in that I have the 23mm F2 if I want to keep things light during the day, but wanted something a little faster for night/evening shooting.

I use the 18m f1.4 and I think it is the best lens I´ve ever used! I switched from Sony FF (with primes and zooms), before that I was a Micro Four-Thirds user (the 75mm f1.8 Zuiko was fantastic!) but the wow-factor of the 18mm is still there and one reason why I am very happy with Fujifilm as a system. With it comes the original 35mm f1.4 which has so much character and is so tiny - I don't think I will replace it with the 33mm any time soon. Thanks for the video, I really like your channel! Together with Eren and Faizal you are a dream-team!

Funny that you mentioned about the sound the 18mm 1.4 makes. I had this lens for a little over a month and I didn't noticed it at first, and then suddenly I hear it, and thought that maybe something broke in it, but I checked it, and still was getting super sharp images, auto focus was the same, etc. So good to hear it's not my lens, cause I grabbed it from the used market, and it had past already over a month by the time I realized about that sound it makes. Great info and video as always!

I love my X-pro2 and x-t2. Use them with the fujicrons. The point for me to shoot Fuji is for the size and IQ for the size of the sensor and overall kit. Honestly, if I need a 1.4 lens, I’d rather shoot with a full frame Sony or Canon with all the advantages that come with that. The XH series with the 18,23,33 1.4 primes is a similar size to the A7iv with the comparable 1.4 primes. I’m glad Fuji has options for all of its users now though. The prime lens lineup was in need of an upgrade. I just wish they kept them smaller for those of us who don’t want larger lenses on an APSC kit.

I bought the same two lenses and I’ve had them for about five or six months and love them! Although I agree, the 18 mm f-stop ring was stupidly loose? I usually keep mine locked when I’m doing street photography on the A setting. I basically carry these two lenses when doing Street and then the 90 F2 to complete my trilogy lens. It really helps keep my subjects in focus on my XT4, which the other lenses lacked big time!

I just took this 33mm f1.4 out for a first test run today. It's excellent. The fast continuous autofocus is working great (combined with my X-T5 camera with its all-important firmware update). Seems very sharp too. I bought it to provide a good low light alternative to my beloved 16-55 f2.8, but I'm also loving the little things like how the 33mm doesn't stick out as much - so doesn't feel like it's going to get bashed when I'm moving through crowds. I was afraid that 33mm on a crop sensor would be too tight for street photography, but it definitely isn't for mine. I still found myself having to walk in quite close. I think it'll be more challenging to use than some shorter focal length Fuji lenses, for street photography, as it lacks the immediate wow factor of their distortion and ability to keep all the background in-shot. But I think that's exciting, as the 33mm has to work harder to decide what to include or exclude from a shot. I'd still like using 16mm or 18mm capability on a separate lens for some 'fancy' close-in shots, but otherwise this 33mm gives me almost everything.

I bought the X-T4 with the 16-80mm kit lens. A nice focal range, but I always have this feeling that my photos were somewhat soft. So, I purchased an 18mm f/1.4 when it was released and I thought I entered a new realm. It is a joy to use and has excellent close-focus distance along with its other attributes (I shoot flowers a lot.) I became a prime convert. I just added the new 56mm f/1.2 to my kit. Wow! That is now my kit - X-T4 with 18mm and 56mm primes. Undecided if I need the 33mm f/1.4. I have decided to go with an X-T5 soon which will really take advantage of the two primes. Plus, my X-T4 flippy screen has a problem ☹

Great review Roman. I owned the 18mm last year and found it to be very sharp on an X-H1. I ended up selling it due to the weight (for travel purposes), as I now use a smaller body X-T5. I repurchased the F2 versions for the reduced size and weight and found their image quality to be great on the 40mp sensor. I don't pixel peep, but if I do get an image that is too soft, I run it through Topaz Labs GigAi program and that cleans it up well. I hope that someday Fuji will redesign this lens to the F2 size. Hey... if Leica can do it, so can Fuji! Cheers!

I have the unholy trinity of 18mm, 23mm and 33mm f/1.4. All great lenses. All super sharp and quite accurate focus. Travel with them using 10L Peak design Sling. Also a 50mm f2 which I think is underrated as it’s a super good little lens. No downsides really except the tiny niggle of 18mm having an aperture ring that’s easier to move. Minor issue though as it’s a superb bit of glass.

I would like to add to a previous comment about the 18mm lens element that shakes when the body isn't turned on. My lens seemed to get worse in this regard as time went on and when I sent it to MPB for a trade-in, they refused it. I ended up selling it to another online retailer and they had no problem with the "knocking" noise.

Just got the 33mm and it’s pretty damn awesome so far. I know it’s more common to do street photos in layers with a wider angle, but once I learn to step back a little (used to 21mm and 27mm) I think I’ll be good to go. It compresses just enough of the space for my style and it’s damn near the perfect focal length for single subjects. I need the WR and wanted the 1.4 for certain situations.

Agree with everything, I've been loving these two for about 6 months now and agree with everything here. I will add though: my 18 mysteriously got really visibly de-centered in the remaining days of a trip recently that was a real bummer. Like 1/3 of the image was quite blurry even at f/8. I don't recall dropping it or anything like that, and the fix was expensive! Hoping that doesn't happen again. Also, +1 on the 3L fit, it's the perfect bag for these two. I can actually fit the Sigma 56 in there too if I really need to, but it's not as comfortable. That bag is a crazy Tardis. Thanks for the video!

Great review! Practical and accompanied by amazing pictures that inspire me! I also got a question for you. One day, I want to invest a new Fuji prime for both video and pictures. Currently, I got the 16mm 1,4, the 35mm f2 and the 90mm f2 as my primes. I often gravitate to the 16mm, because it has the most pop, unique character and is fairly versatile. However, more often than not I feel the focal length is not the most ideal one for the situation. To a certain extent that challenges me and makes me a better photographer (and videographer) through it, but I am looking for a lens that suits the image I have in my mind more effortlessly. The 35mm f/2 is nice for family shoots, but lacks character and has bad focus breathing. I need a lens that is suited to separate subjects from background for portraits, travel, food photography and different kinds of videography. I am really torn between the 35mm and the 23mm. I like the 23mm as a moderate wide-angle view, for dynamic, environmental portraits or as a walk-around lens. It suits my eye naturally and is wide, but still focuses on the subject. My concern however, is that it will replace my 16mm 1,4, instead of complement it. It will also leave gap between 23mm and 90mm where I have no solid (standard or short-tele) portrait lens. The 33m is great for interviews, close-ups, details and food photography. The problem with that lens however, is that it is less versatile than the 23mm, especially indoors, and is less suited for establishing a scene. So I might still use the 16mm for most of my personal and professional work. What would you advise me to do?

The difference since you left London full time Roman, you would rarely, if at all, shoot at night but now you are more a Travel Photographer than a Street Photographer then I guess low light or night shoots are inevitable, either way, you do seem to be enjoying it. I’ve been looking at getting a 1.4, I’ve got the 35mm F/2 but rarely use it, I’ve thought about selling it quite a bit lately, more so because I could really use the money but that would leave me with only my 18-55 and xc50-230, the latter I need to replace the bayonet fitting after I dropped my camera when my dog decided to try and chase another one, thankfully, though it got a few scratches and dents the camera works fine as I was sat down at the time so it only fell 2ft at the most. I can’t afford to get the Fuji lenses, even used at present so may have to go with the Viltrox version instead, I’ve heard only good things about them anyway.

Thank you for this video, I have lusted over the 18, 23 and 33mm but have never pulled the trigger as, I need something for my work that does something i can not already do to a good standard. I have a range of lenses and mostly shoot in a studio environment, where the aperture is closed down from F/1.x to get the correct DOF... For photography, I do not need a new lens (however, I am in the market for a good lens for video. The 33mm is to tight for what i need to shoot so it is really a choice between the 18mm and 23mm... or potentially something else. My go to lens for video is the 10-24 (original) mostly used in manual focus and at F/4 everything is basically in focus all the time.. but if i want to shoot with a narrow DOF and need a wide angle lens I currently have nothing suitable, as the original 35mm F/1.4 (that is not wide enough) can not be trusted to not go hunting (if i only get 1 take) like the original 18mm. The 27mm is only 1 stop different from the F/4 and very tight. So currently, I am sitting on my hands waiting mainly because shooting video at a shallow DOF is not a priority, and will not return money quickly. Since 90%+ of what i need to shoot needs to be shot at F/4 to make sure the DOF is correct, and 4K @ 24 FPS and shutter speed of 1/48.. not really getting into issues with light

Roman, do you still notice the issue with the 18mm that the focus acquisition gets more laggy when stopping down the aperture? I remember you mentioned it in another video. My 18mm copy does that which can be a bit annoying in some situations. According to the Fujifilm health check service the lens is ok. I haven't noticed that issue with the 33mm.

Years ago I bought, both new with only few shots and for a very low price, my xpro3 with the first version of the 23mm 1.4 (eq 35mm my first favorite focal length) and I adapted my old Pentax lenses . Less than a year ago I bought the xt4, second hand brand new for a very low price. I wanted some lenses and my choice was either the high end 16-50 2.8 but it it didn't have OIS and was too expensive. So I finally jumped on the f2 versions of the 35mm and the 50mm because I remembered why I got into Fuji: COMPACT CAMERAS AND LENSES. I love shooting in low light but the 1.4 are too expensive and I already have the Mitakon 35mm 0.95. I still want a good lens for video but my choice isn't fixed yet. Do I wait for an OIS version of the 16-50 2.8 or do I go for that price to 2 or 3 entry ciné lenses.

Honestly the aperture ring saga with Fuji lenses is a bit maddening, it can go from super loose (56/1.2) to annoyingly stiff (80/2.8). It’s as if Fuji can’t make up their mind about what their aperture ring should feel like so they do something different every time. I gotta agree though that the 33/1.4 hits that sweet spot and I wish they’d just stick to it for every lens they put out going forward.

The aperture ring definitely feels very different across almost all their lenses. It's almost as if Fujifilm hires a new supplier/contractor for parts for each and every lens. Weird. The f/2 primes probably has the nicest feeling aperture rings. My 18 f/1.4 had a loose internal connection causing the LM to thonk mid-use. Repairs were ridiculously expensive for something that was a QC fault, but oh well... unlucky.

I could be biased but in my experience, I find that lenses or camera bodies made in Japan have a bit more quality to them. A big reason why I feel the fujicron lenses stand the test of time. It's a shame to see the 18s aperture ring so loose, not a deal breaker, but when you're paying near $1000 for a lens or more, it definitely becomes worth mentioning. Love your reviews and perspective, thanks for the video 🤙

I barely use the 50 as the 33 is so good and way more versatile. Trading two small lenses for one larger one is still a net gain when traveling light. The pancake is a great little lens though and I’m planning to keep that.

I noticed the same thing with the looseness of the two rings across these two. I’ve had 3 copies of the 18 and all 3 were loose. The 33 between the two copies I had both were tighter. I assume it’s on purpose. Maybe they did it for video users since 28 is more likely to be used in video ? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good summary. I’ve had them all too (the f1.4s and f2s). The stand out ones for me were the 23 f1.4 and the 50 f2. Along with the 18 they are the sharpest but both are better built than the 18 with tight aperture and focus rings. The 33 f1.4 and 35 f2 are very good. The 23 f2 was the weakest in terms of image quality. Worth looking at either version of the 56 f1.2 too, is probably the most fun Fuji lens I’ve owned and pairs well with an 18 or 23. The fast lenses are generally always worth it if you need to shoot in low light but those f2s really take advantage of having a smaller sensor as they are so cheap and small.

My dude, I understand that you need to be consistent by uploading more videos, but you cannot make a long term review of a lens which had been released at the end of 2021. That is not what long term stands for :)))) Anyways, we have Fuji lenses older than 10 years and they perform excellent, therefore it's clearly that the NEW 33 mm will have no issues. Sorry if I was aggresive, but all the youtubers are doing long time reviews of 1 year old gear and it's not relevant.

  • @snapsbyfox

A piece of gear that has been used professionally on a daily basis is long term enough to give a realistic opinion on the product. Time also has little relevance as the use case varies. I might have done more photography in 1 year than you have in 10... So I appreciate that this video is not for you, however most people including myself find these videos helpful and relevant given it is looking at the latest available kit.

@@kmzzzzz I was only polite, but don't agree with you and Roman. Any camera manufacturer will provide you with 2 years warranty (or more in some rare cases), therefore it's clearly that it will perform. We all know that photographer who is doing events and after 5 years 'that lens' works, like all the lenses do because we are not talking about a DSLR with limited shutter count - Therefore "maybe in one year I do more photography than you in 10" it's not relevant when talking about a new lens with top notch technology and build. Me and some friends bought used lensed over the years, lenses which were 6-7 years old and performed without complaints - especially primes because they have a simple and easy to maintain internal build. We can email Fujifilm and ask them if a 1 year long time review of a new lens makes sense if what I'm saying still doesn't make it.

@@YouNeedMyVoice Sorry, I don’t think you understand. Watch more long-term reviews here on youtube and you will be suprised by how many are after 12 months and how few are after 10 years. Long-term is not only how much an item degrades but also how it performs in different settings. 1 year of heavy use will definitively give more information about an item than years of light use. Eiter way, it’s pretty standard to do a long-term review after 12 months so you setting your own definition does not change the general concensus.
