Great video 👍 I’ve got every Fuji new lenses and this 33mm is the best lens as a wedding and event photographer, it focuses super fast ! Has a very versatile focal length and best of all shooting at f1.4 produces the fabulous cinematic portraits that have that dreamy look which have that glow look to the skin 📸 and resembles that same look from the older xf35mm 1.4 . Whilst using it for street photography one probably doesn’t notice the magic but when using it at 1.4 in the right lighting conditions this lens has the magic🤩

Great video review Goughie! Lens looks perfect indeed. I have added it to my wants list too XD Just a bit iffy on the "character" effect, or rather lack of. Is it something you noticed when using the lens? Might not be a big deal given how lovely the bokeh looks while focal plane looks sharp wide open. Cheers on yet another awesome video with beautiful photos leading us to the weekend :D

I just took this 33mm f1.4 out for a first test run today. It's excellent. The fast continuous autofocus is working great (combined with my X-T5 camera with its all-important firmware update). Seems very sharp too. I bought it to provide a good low light alternative to my beloved 16-55 f2.8, but I'm also loving the little things like how the 33mm doesn't stick out as much - so doesn't feel like it's going to get bashed when I'm moving through crowds. I was afraid that 33mm on a crop sensor would be too tight for street photography, but it definitely isn't for mine. I still found myself having to walk in quite close. I think it'll be more challenging to use than some shorter focal length Fuji lenses, for street photography, as it lacks the immediate wow factor of their distortion and ability to keep all the background in-shot. But I think that's exciting, as the 33mm has to work harder to decide what to include or exclude from a shot. I'd still like using 16mm or 18mm capability on a separate lens for some 'fancy' close-in shots, but otherwise this 33mm gives me almost everything.

Thank you for your review! I own a XT-5 with a Fuji 14mm 2.8 as I love landscape photography and a Fuji 18-55 2.8-4.0 for general use. However, I prefer prime lenses. I am absolutely torn between the new 23mm 1.4 and 33mm 1.4. Coming from the X100V section I am more used to the 23mm focal length but I prefer the size of the 33mm lens.. I am looking for the "holy grail for everyday use" with great low light performance. What do you recommend? (except trying out both and deciding on my own 😆). Thx!

Here's the deal with the new LM primes: they're incredible. When I bought into the Fujifilm system for my travel kit, the first 3 lenses I bought were the 18mm f/2, 27mm f/2.8, and the 35mm f/1.4. I love the 35mm for many reasons, but its size, weight, and "character" won me over. Fast forward to now and I've had this 33mm for over a year and I have used the 35mm maybe 3-5 times. I've even packed it and decided to swap it out for the 33 instead. Why? It just has everything I want in a 50mm equivalent lens for travel. Now it's weather sealed and has true top notch image quality.

It took me a while to actually sell the 35 1.4 after I got the 33 as well. I thought I'd use it as a lighter option. I thought I'd use it as a quasi AF vintage lens or for "character". And testing side by side there were certainly situations I felt the 35 was as sharp if not sharper in the centre. But the AF meant lost shots, especially in poorer light. Not mis-focussed, but hunting and the moment or spontaneous moment or smile is lost. And it doesn't take long before you start noticing the fringing, ghosting, and comparative lack of sharpness and contrast. I was also packing the 35, then last minute swapping it out for the 33!

Thought the 30 2.8 would scratch the itch for something different around this FL, but that 35 grabs a hold of you! I have the 35mm f1.4 and see no need to upgrade. It is just so so good. At f1.4 I'm looking for center sharpness and nice bokeh. If I need corner to corner sharpness the 35 f1.4 more than holds its own at f5.6-f8 vs the 33. The 35 is rather portable vs the large 33. If you are more photo than video than no need for upgrade whatsoever.

I own the 35mm f/2 which is my go-to focal length. I do think the 33mm f1.4 is a special lens but it is not giving me substantially different results compared to my 35 f/2 which is decently sharp and renders backgrounds quite similarly. At the same time, the 35mm is tiny which is a considerable advantage in itself. I might rent Vitrox's recent 27mm f/1.2 to see if its bright aperture is worth the additional weight.

The image quality to me isnt that different to the f2 however obviously if you are looking for 1.4 it is nice and sharp at that aperture although the older 1.4 does have a nicer photographic look but then fails in weather resistance and autofocus speed in comparison. These are great lenses for professional work but for everyday carry for me its still not needed and the f2 does the job just as well at a cheaper price with a smaller form factor.

I wouldn't agree about "fuji give you an options", I would say fuji give you an options without good option: 1. old 35mm f1.4 - it's actually very good and good enough sized, but no weather sealing and slow motor 2. 33mm f1.4 - almost perfect, but price and size. It's too much for the most amateurs. 3. 35mm f2 "fujicron" it's actually basic plastic one, but fuji renew and rehoused it. Slow aperture and no any magic, not it's not bad and quite compact, but you can take plastic one for almost nothing. 4. 35mm f2 plastic one - same 35 f2 fujicron but in plastic. So after all there is no good choice, 4 lens and no good compromise.. Such wide segmentation in single focal range means fuji wish to dive into your pockets badly. The right strategy was to renew old 35 f1.4 instead of rehousing cheaper plastic lens. But Fuji wanted to release and protect sells of more expensive 33mm f1.4

  • @Goughie

Tbh I’m not really sure what lens you want? A fast, small, cheap, great AF, optically amazing, weather sealed lens, I think that’s what everyone would love, but lens design will always come with compromise surely? The reason the old 35mm f1.4 is lightweight is because it’s comprised all other aspects, no sealing; old small AF motors, no weather sealing The reason the new ones large… is because it hasn’t compromise performance anywhere, its compromised size

@@Goughie > Tbh I’m not really sure what lens you want? A fast, small, cheap, great AF, optically amazing, weather sealed lens I wish there were good compromise. Good compromise means good balance. > hasn’t compromise performance anywhere, its compromised size Not only size, but also price. And yes, thats' bad compromise for most customers, but good for fuji pockets, because now you have to buy 2 lens: if you wish to go compact 35mm f2, if you wish quality - 33mm f1.4. Every Fuji manager cries how you protect their salaries and annual bonus. > The reason the old 35mm f1.4 is That's fuji's marketing blah-blah-blah, no need to justify it. It was totally doable. Weather sealing is rubber bands in lens it doesn.t takes almost anything, the reason why it's not on every lens - marketing, only "pro" lens should have it. Faster motor - smaller and cheaper 35 f2 somehow fits it, so again the only reason marketing. So Fuji they realised they could rehouse cheap lens into weather sealed body and sell it for double price. Also they were need to release "real pro" lens and protect sells of it. That's all.
