Yes the X-Pro 3 does speak to your heart, your head, and your soul. I nearly sold my Leica CL but wound up keeping it (thankfully) but still went ahead and bought the X-Pro3. It is such a fine camera, makes me want to create, makes me want to get out every day in the winter, snow or rain or sunshine, and find pictures. Very appreciated your review of this, and the “soul” of this camera.

Watched your review of the X-Pro3, and yes, you can assign the ISO setting to the front dial, and it’s really convenient. I was a little taken aback by the rear panel screen arrangement, but after about 20 minutes, it didn’t matter. I do like the waist level aspect when you flip down the screen. Reminded me of using an old twin lens reflex camera (the Russian Lubitel). Anyway, I do have the CL, and it has always been my favourite camera, but since picking up this X-Pro3, it is soon becoming my favourite. I still own both, but the X-Pro3 with weather sealing is amazing. I got the Dura (black) version because it was on sale for the same price as the painted black … Smudges yes, but that doesn’t bother me either. It wipes off pretty easily. Anyway, thanks for the review. The X-Pro3 is a photographer’s camera! Lightweight, intuitive, and those simulations are beautiful.

Well, this video helped me a lot to understand the difference between the xpro3 and the other cameras i'm interrested in. Thank you very much, great job :)

The ISO can be set to the front wheel and the shutter to the rest wheel. This method makes the combo-dial rather redundant but makes manual shooting very fast. It's how I shoot with both my x100f and X-H1. Aperture, shutter and then exposure with the ISO.

Yeah that’s how I shoot with the x100f and T3/H1 also, agree it’s a fast and easy process. I have no idea why that’s not available on the pro2, strange and disappointing decision there.

The fastest way to shoot full manual with the XP2 is to do it as you shoot neg film: set shutter and aperture as you want and let auto ISO take care of exposure. Within reason of course, but you can underexpose the XP2 up to 5 stops without penalty, even more with monochrome. There’s plenty of room to play with, all you need to do is make sure not to overexpose key highlights.

@@adrianguggisberg3656 It may be the fastest way with the Xpro2 but the ISO wheel method will be a lot faster and far more accurate than the just 'auto ISO'. No more fiddling with AE lock or turning the exposure compensation dial to 'correct' what the camera believes is the right exposure for the scene and certainly a lot less time correcting exposure in post.

@@DavidWhittley Yup, that's how I used to shoot, too. However, these days autoexposure works brilliantly and shooting digital has become almost as easy and convenient as shooting film. I only set ISO to manual if there is a particular reason. Ymmv, but for the kind of photography an XPro makes sense, auto ISO is the way to go most of the times.

Once again, a thought provoking “insight” into a camera that, unless you’ve used a Leica or similar (XPro-2!) street photography tool, may be lost on a casual shooter. Hugh...well done! The “whimsy” is the magic that many will miss.

Thank for this thoughtful review. What a relief! Two things, (I have the X-Pro3 with me now) first is the ISO can be assigned to the function wheel. I have mine assigned to the front wheel. Second, I know the ISO dial placement isn't the best design, but I have found that I can use my thumb and index finger and left and turn the ISO function while keeping the camera to my eye to change the setting. Early this year after watching this review and your review of the cl, many times, I opted for the cl. I’ve loved it. Owning the 18, 23, 35, the latter being perhaps the best lens I’ve ever owned. Love is an understatement. The cl is magic! I wish it were weather sealed. And I don’t mind not having an ovf. That said, I’ve rented the xpro3 twice, because I’d love to have the Fuji aps lens lineup. With both rentals, I sent it back convinced about the cl. It is headed in the right direction, but not there yet. They need a better evf, a better solution to iso, and a more simplistic menu system like the cl. I know your review is abut dated, but I sure do love the re watch. Thanks for keeping us excited about our hobby!

I always enjoy your videos! I hope I’m not losing you to Fuji. That “last picture” monologue (starting at 5:59 ) almost sounded like a description of my Panasonic G9 (which is getting a bunch of cool firmware upgrades in a couple of weeks). I’ve seen the Fuji colors. They’re very nice! But my G9 rivals them and has so much to offer for the price that I’m not persuaded to look further.

Seeing and handling the XPro3 in NY at Photo Plus (sorry I wasn't able to run into you there it would have been nice to shake you hand), has convinced me that should I buy another XPro to supplement my other Fuji cameras it will not be an XPro3 it will be an XPro2. I don't like the screen design, for me personally it's a deal breaker. But with all these people getting the 3 that will likely mean some 2's will be available at a nice price used now... :)

Even the way you deliver your videos is artistic in itself. I feel like I’m listening to an audiobook … it’s quite mesmerising. Reminds me of listening to 1984 by George Orwell.

2:23 I agree a bigger battery is essential for the pro x cameras, can't believe we're still waiting on this.

Is the front thumbwheel clickable same as my XT2 where i can quickly adjust both the shutter speed and iso, great thoughtful vid.

Hugh & Claudia, the back and white look is very chic, well done. As for the review excellent, the comparisons to other like cameras is an added bonus. Im pleased to see the CL2 is still your camera of choice for personal work. Its still on my wish list. My Z7 and many Milvus lens will be joined one day by the CL for when i want to lighten the load somewhat. Keep up the excellent work.

Is it me but I think the Xpro 3 has made the Xpro 2 a more tempting camera to get. After looking at both I decided on the Xpro 2 due to value/function. You can get the Xpro 2 graphite w/ the 23mm F2 bundle for less than a Xpro 3 body alone. Either way, I think both Cameras are great.

11:07 seconded on ibis, this camera is made for shooting with unstabilized primes.

Sir Hugh, do fingerprints clean easily though? Or do they stay stubborn as you try to clean them?

Great video. I got a chance to play with it at PPE and liked the X-Pro3 a lot, though at this point don't plan on getting it, but would highly recommend it. I have Leica Ms (digital and film) as well as the X100S, so can't really justify buying another one now. :-) I am partial to the fully articulating screens however, and would have liked seeing that on the X-Pro3 (keeping the gimmicky square film box display on the back when you had the screen facing in. I kept an eye out for you there, but didn't see you, though I briefly spied Claudia near the Fuji booth.

I am strangely proud that I didn't skip to the photo😋 For someone trying to cope with a city's loneliness though, the one with the two strangers sitting with their backs turned to eachother was a killer shot... As far as the camera is concerned, I already drull over it (that won't help with the smudge thing...) but positive reviews from individuals with their feet on the ground and their minds taking off, like you, are bringing me dangerously close to divorce... Claudia, you may have saved your man, but who the hell is going to save me from my woman???

XPro 3 wins for flexibility and value, Q2 wins for experience and ultimate IQ. If you’re leaning toward Q, I’d advise stretching to the Q2.

Can you explain your grading process for this beautiful black and white footage?

Great stuff Hugh - I think the improvements warrant an upgrade from the 2. I have so much muscle memory invested in the Fuji system it’d be a shame to lose that! Ultimately, I suspect, the still image photographers the Xpro is clearly aimed at just feel this camera is ‘right’ for them as I certainly do. Whether this is born from intuitive design or familiarity with the camera is open to discussion. I happen to think the two work hand-in-hand very well, and any improvements/ changes will be quickly integrated into my usage (or indeed, not even used). That’s what I like about the Pro - at its most basic, it is still a wonderful tool with the capacity to adapt to most situations very easily. Once again, thanks for a great review Hugh 👍

Another awesome vid and review! But from one “statistical outlier” to another ... one thing that has frustrated me on occasion with the two Fuji’s I own is the non-lockable exposure comp dial right on the corner of the body where most of us hold the camera. Once I get in the groove shooting and I’m not checking images on the rear screen, I’ve usually hit it and I’m over or under exposing. A simple locking button in the middle would be great. Surprised no one mentions it in reviews ...

Great video, again. Going to buy this device - trading my x pro 2. I had entertained the CL, pretty much based on your video(s) and the Leica mystique, but to me this version has frankly surpassed the M by Leica. Really, it has. I have used/tried for longish periords (multiple hours) an M (and a TL2, not a CL though) and get the focused (..) Leica approach. This camera nailed it. Add the film simulations that frankly are the best in the whole industry. I am looking forward to the better AF and better EVF. I shoot mostly hybrid OVF with EVF for very wide or tele. This is the best street camera you can get now.

Fab video and insight to the X-Pro3. I sold my X-Pro2 I as I just didn't enjoy the viewfinder/s experience that I get from my X100f. But having said that, I still can't put down my Nikon D4. When I've been on the streets, I've never experienced any bother, or feelings of being noticed with my Nikon, or no more than when using my X100f or my iPhone. But I must say, the D4 has always got the shot with extremely minimal fuss to messing with settings and adjustments, which both the X-Pro2 always needed and my X100f still requires fiddling with. Will have to give this a try and see how it fairs, but it's going to have to be good. God Bless and keep doing this fabulous stuff. Cheers :)

How do you like this camera for shooting portraits? I’m I portrait and headshot photographer , shooting with the XT3 primarily but I recently got an x100 V and I’m loving the rangefinder feeling so much that I’m thinking of trading my XT3 for the X pro but wondering if it will serve me as a portrait photographer who occasionally does family sessions. I also occasionally do portraits in the studio as well.

Great video.....i guess folks are always gonna be disappointed when a company doesn't make a camera specifically tailored to *their* needs/wants....not sure why given the amazing choice available out there. Buy something else, it's that easy. This, on the other hand, is exactly what I'm looking for as I've loved the form and function of the XP1 for years. Never used the lcd screen once on it except to review pics during a break. Viva la quirky....I wish there was more of it (hint : monochrome X100) Cheers, Hugh ;-)

I myself would think for Street photography and photography in general I’d prefer Fuji’s regular flipping screen. Probably just my shooting style . The camera is beautiful looking to me and love it low impact look . Paired with Fujifilms f/2 lenses it’s perfect. I shoot low light and am begging for the lowest f/stop I can get most of the time. That said f/2 is a great f/stop and these lenses are brilliant. Especially with this style of camera. And the XT2 and 3 bodies as well. I shoot nikon DSLRs but am a huge Fujifilm fan .

Awesome review Hugh. I thought about switching from my X-T3, but decided, no. I am however shooting much more manual, and spent my camera upgrade dollars on two very sweet Voitlander M mount lenses. I’m very pleased with my decision.

Glad I found your review. I'm still dithering about this camera, given I have an X-T3 (currently undergoing some minor warranty work with Fuji Canada). I have Fujinon glass, so it makes sense economically. But...but...I keep eyeing used Leica film and digital models. I used to have Leicas, sold them for university tuition. Well I guess getting an MA was a good thing though it's not much use as a bus driver! There's another thing to consider: I don't want every photographer who sees me with one to stop and ask me about it. I put black electricians tape on the name and model. But the X-Pro, 2 or 3, is a conversation trigger, as much as aLeica is an invitation to be mugged!

If the pictures are anything to go by, this camera ready suits you. Like, really 😁 that first one had a touch of Ernst Haas about it

The lift-up-and-turn ISO dial is exactly the same as the one I had on the 35mm camera I grew up using.

Just stumbled upon your videos while searching for review about the Fujifilm X range cameras, altough I'm not looking for this specific model, it is a very good and informative video that doesnt get boring after 2 minutes! I do have a question that maybe you can help me with... I am looking for a good all-rounder and I'm torn between the Fujifilm X-T3 and the Lumix GH5 (or maybe the G90). I love photography but also video shooting, I know that both are more than capable for both situations but the sensor size on the GH5 worries me a bit since its a micro four thirds (I suppose light wise is less sensitive than a APS-C) and on the X-T3 since there is no in body stabilization the number of lenses with that feature is very reduced... These may be picky points to consider, anyway, what do you recommend based in your experience? cheers and thank you!

I feel that the XT30 is probably a better choice for value if your looking to save money for glass.

As I learn more and more about Fuji I see how it is an alternative to Leica. Even if I could afford the CL, the lenses alone would leave anyone broke lol. Fuji has definitely got it going on with their offerings with nothing but excellent quality.

It's not even a debate, what is the best street photography camera...well, it could be a debate, is the XPro3 better than the X100V? One of those is the best above all others.

9:58 I agree on the iso dial, and would argue that fuji's dial scheme needs a redesign. The push-pull dial could click upward like a focus clutch, making it easier to use. Fuji could bite the bullet and add a separate iso dial. Having to use two dials to set exact shutter speed is bad design, either make the writing on the shutter dial smaller, put a screen in it, or split the shutter range, low numbers in regular position, and high numbers in a window. Keeping it the same for years, and letting us use the command dials, is not really a solution.

Johnny Doe has already said it and I agree. I've been waiting on your Xpro3 video ? 🙏🏼

What lens do you recommend for the xpro 3?

This has been the most helpful review today. I appreciate your honesty on the EVF. I went from my X100T to an Expo2 and missed the bigger EVF of the X100T. I hate the ISO dial on the Xpro2 and would appreciate the new ISO function on the Xpro3. I will not be switching to the Xpro3. I might even consider the XT-3 or 4 but so many people just say that although the XT-3 has the better EVF and ISO dial it misses the magic of the Xpro series camera.

Does anyone know if there is a format button shortcut for the Xpro3? With the Xpro2 (Press the Delete button and hold it down for three seconds. Then, while still pressing the Delete button, click in the rear command dial)?

Thanks Hugh. I don't want to minimize the haptonics that make the Pro desirable and fun to use. As you know there are a few superficial differences in the bodies, i.e., the location of the viewfinder, the availability of EVF which mimics the Leica RF models, etc., etc. We can agree that none of these features will allow one to differentiate the same image captured with both cameras. I have used Leica cameras for many years and can no longer justify the high price for the glass and bodies. IMO there will be little to no discernible differences in images captured with the Leica M digital RF cameras vs. the Fuji XT3 or Pro 3. Other camera manufacturers have been able to approach the quality of Leica M glass at a fraction of the price. I am interested in the Pro model but have difficulty justifying the price difference from the T3. It is likely that most or all of the film simulations currently limited to the Pro will be available by an update on the T3. As is almost always the case when parsing cameras that are essentially the same as to image quality, the ineffable "experience" of using the camera will guide the purchase. Elliot

While I do own the Xpro3, I did get the chance to try it out. I never much like the LCD screens on cameras for shooting. They mainly only served the purpose of setting up the camera or adjusting the settings as I go. I always treated my cameras that have these as a film camera and just take the picture and look at it later when back home. It's too time consuming to be always looking at it. Another thing, I would ask Fuji to do away with the video feature on this particular model and focus more on the photographer's use. Put the video use more on another model. Make the window to focus a little bigger, make the battery bigger or find a way for it last longer perhaps. Maybe these will appear in the next upgrade, I don't know really. But I love the look of it, the ISO feature on this on the 2 caught my attention. It looks more and more like an actual film camera than just a touch and go point camera...or kid toy. I abhor having the camera having total control of the shot I take. It's like I have no artistic control whatsoever lol. Everyone is different and I know this, but as this particular model has grown since its coming avail back 2012, it has shown promise. It is my hope that Fuji will keep evolving this to be more photographer's tool rather than just another toy. If it costs more to buy, so be it. I rather buy something quality than something I could pick up at Target or Wal Mart for about few hundred dollars- cards included. The adapters to put Summicron lenses on it is def interesting. I was not aware Leica's line of lenses could work on these, if I understood you right that is. Anyway, after seeing this and the one you did on the 2, definitely will look into this camera a little more. I was thinking about getting the xpro1 and converting it infrared when had time and getting the 3 when had the money to do so or maybe even waiting til the 4th gen came out. All the X series cameras I have seen, have about 4 or 5 progressing models to chose from, so logically it would be so for the Xpro line. Thanks for the video ...def will subscribe 👍

I have in my collection, an XT-2, it is the only camera that I continue to return to... That camera is the street photography go to..! I am getting the xpro-2 very soon.

You are a gentleman Hugh - only you could sugar coat (and get away with credibility in tact) the epic and unnecessary design fail which is the flippy screen -which I could put up with if it wasn't for the dumbing down of the OVF AND the disappointing EVF ....Fuji seem to be going down the road of well we have this thing everyone wants called IBIS - But we will use it only on the H series and we have this new processor and chip - but we will only offer it to X series...and if someone wants all the goodies- well - tough luck... Yep the old school CL still has the better EVF, ( importantly on the side of the camera body) better build quality ( titaaaaanium titaaaaanium not required) better menu system and better user shooting experience and via L mount glass MORE and better total lens system to draw from.....

I’m convinced too. I have mine pre-ordered already but it fills me with confidence to know you speak kindly of it having spent some time with it. Thanks for the video as always :)

Thanks you for this review. This is probably a strange question but hey ho. I have astigmatism in my right eye, I can see quite well out of it regardless but look through any camera view finder with my left eye. Does his negate the ergonomics of range finder cameras? I'v never used one but find my self intrigued by them, especially the X-pro3, but clearly the viewfinder is designed for the the right eye?

I’m left eye dominant and have been using Xpro and x100 cameras since the beginning and have had no problems at all. I love them in fact. Of course best to try one for yourself. Good luck
