Fujifilm X-Pro 3 Review and Feature Overview

Ғылым және технология

This is my Fujifilm X-Pro 3 Review and Feature Overview.
The Fuji X-Pro3 was announced on the 23rd October 2019 and in my opinion, is the most beautiful and ergonomically the best camera Fujifilm has made to date.
It's a camera that may divide opinion, but if you are looking for a camera that will last forever, is amazingly quick, tactile and, in my opinion, the best Fujifilm camera fro Street Photography and Reportage work - this is the camera for you.
I hope you enjoy my thoughts on the camera.
You can see the full written review, along with the sample images and full tech specs here: www.f16.click/gear/fujifilm-x...
Please feel free to leave any questions below and I'll do my best to answer all reasonable ones.
Spanish and English Captions on the film.

As I mention in the review (and above) the camera is not going to be for everybody, if you don't particularly like the camera, please don't "thumbs down" the video. It doesn't help me and make my kids really sad. It's a camera that is absolutely beautiful and a mammoth step up from the X-Pro2. Have a great day folks.

Good to see you back and I look forward to seeing many of your photo’s taken with the X-Pro3. I’m undecided about the screen but I get why they did it and think it’s refreshing to see a camera manufacture try something new. If there’s one thing I wish Fuji would change it would be the joystick, I have the X-E3 and although it works fine it just feels a little weak and small. Also, although you didn’t mention it here, I like the new Q menu customisation, I hope that finds its why to the other X series camera’s too.

Thanks very much for this honest assessment of the X-Pro3. I was really on the fence about this camera because, like you, I really didn't care for the hidden lcd screen implementation nor the removal of the d-pad. But after seeing this video and how you addressed both of those issues, I've decided to go ahead and purchase an X-Pro3. Fuji should really thank you for this type of honest approach as opposed to some of the straight shill videos I've been seeing, as it kept me in Fuji (yes, I was considering ditching Fuji over the handling of the X-Pro3). Thanks again.

Hey Kevin, thanks a lot for your review! I am using Leica M cameras as well as a Fuji X100F, and I really like and appreciate that Fuji has the guts to produce a camera like the X-Pro3. Since the X100F, this is the first camera outside the Leica world that tempts me. And of course thank you so much for your honest review. Yes, I know you’re a X-Photographer, but it’s obvious that you’re speaking from your own experience and that you’re not holding back things you don’t like or you think are up to a very individual choice.

Thanks for the straight-up review, Kevin, and for all you do to support us.... The final image -- Classic Neg -- is stunning....I wonder if Fuji left off backlighting the sub-monitor because it might be a distraction when using the EVF/OVF, IF it could not be dimmed....I have to say that what's wrong with my photography is not the X-E3 I hold in my hands, but how I see and execute. The X-Pro3, lust object that it is, will not make me a better image maker/story teller. Although that new OVF.........

Thanks very much Kevin, great review, also, glad that you are back, we all missed you! Have you tried the back button focusing (BBF) setup in the X-Pro3? I was never very satisfied with the tiny, closely placed (so, easy to confuse them by touch) and not easily reachable by your thumb, buttons, to be used for BBF in XT-1 and XT-2. And I think the focus speed was marginally slower when not focusing with the shutter button (closer to contrast-detect speed with the back buttons, than phase-detect, really). Only the X-H1 slightly improved on that. I think the X-T3 (I haven't tested it personally) has slightly more pronounced back buttons for AE-L & AF-L that can be used for BBF, but I see that the X-Pro3 has only one tiny AE-L/AF-L button. What is your opinion on this? Many thanks!

Another value-adding review! Thank you Kevin! I'm still diggin' the XE3 as my mobile, lightweight, wedding workhorse as I'm pushing my composition capabilities as much as possible, but am fine not having to push the technology envelope. For me, the movement from X100 to X100F was of necessity; but the XE3 platform [similar to XPro2] became a place of tranquility - where technology limitations [and awkward user interfaces] weren't holding back my artistic and compositional capabilities. That being said - would I buy an XE4 with quicker AF and improved EVF? Hhhhmmm. . . .

I think I would love the camera as much as you and for the same reasons. If only it had HLG video I could let go of my XT3, the 200Mbps internal recording I can live with. @@kevin_mullins just seen video is limited to 15 minutes, so won't bother asking for an upgrade as I need a bit longer and it may be a heat thing. Will go to plan B which is to get the next X-E camera (and keep the X-T3) if the EVF is bigger. Hopefully the next X-E camera is a bit smaller as I recently managed to use an X-E in skinny jeans pockets with the 27mm (I fancy one with no rear LCD and a little top panel LCD instead, but that won't happen). Was looking forward to 2 eye open street photography with the OVF, but it sounds like many revert to the EVF anyway. Subscribed many months ago 🤠👍

Kevin, I’m a huge fan of your work, both personal and professional. I find your work and style very inspiring. I would love to get your opinion on the XPRO 3 as my main rig for portraits. I am a professional headshot and portrait photographer, working in a small studio with strobes and also often shooting outside with natural light. I have an XT3 and most recently, a X100V, and I’ve fallen seriously in love with the rangefinder style of the X100. So much so, that I’m considering selling the XT3 to get the XPRO3. I’d love your thoughts on that. I actually like the idea of the “hidden” LCD, and I love the connection with my subject when I look through a rangefinder style camera. It’s intimate and I can feel the camera get out of the way. It feels good to have an eye on my subject. I have no problem with the XT3, it’s great and reminds me of the old Nikon FE that I trained on as a teen, but the rangefinder size and style of the XPRO and X100 series has my heart. I feel a deep connection to rangefinder style. I trained on film, shooting since I was 13, and something about the analog feel of the XPRO is calling to me, but unsure how it would be for professional headshots and portraits. Would you feel confident to have the XPRO as a main portrait and even a studio camera? Could it replace my XT3? I also very occasionally shoot family portraits and small events. My work is all about people and the human connection to clients. Thanks for any thoughts! I trust your expertise and thoughts. Would I regret moving to the XPRO from the XT3?

You can bring the screen down to 180 degrees which is fine for most things but the screen is certainly something that people need to consider if looking at this cameras. Noise should be same as XT3 but perhaps a little better at higher ISO due to the -6ev focusing ability compared to the (I think) -3 on the XT3.

Those shots in the beginning are EPIC !! (I love BW and your style in particular, heavy on the contrast, like Ted Vieira) I owned the X100F and seeing the X-Pro 3, the dual function dial scared me, nightmares if you will, cause that is one of the main reasons I sold the X100F, I hated that dial and still do. It simple does not work when you want to change settings in a hurry. (I shoot manual 90%) Changed it for the Leica Q (not the Q2 cause that camera is less light sensitive due to the more MP that basically don't add up to the quality of shooting IMO ~ FF 24MP = sweet spot ) and man that is a relief besides the Summilux lens and colors SOOC. Based on that, I would go for the X-T3 any day of the week. Thanks for sharing your opinion and thoughts, btw any news on Zach, I miss his video's !

That said (unlike you) I don’t generally get on as well with the rangefinder style bodies. I prefer the xt to the xpro and the 50s to the r. Thanks for this. I moved to the X-T3 from X-Pro2 for similar reasons as yourself (and Fujifilm’s trade in bonus!) - I’ve never felt emotionally attached in the same way, but appreciate the vast functionality of the X-T range. I have 2 concerns about moving back - firstly how does the EVF compare to the X-T3 - is it a lot smaller? Also some reviewers have commented that he LCD can’t be lowered when mounted on a tripod - do you see this being an issue even with an L- bracket?

Appreciate your feedback/review as always. I completely agree with you on the screen and desire to have it stay as it was...fixed...or if need to move then fully articulating giving the option to the user to hide or have facing out as opposed to forcing one or the other. The lack of D-Pad is potentially not as much of an issue depending on the touch screen interface and how that actually works...or adjusting to the joystick. Given this is Fuji's only rangefinder style it forces long time X-Pro1 & X-Pro2 owners/users like myself to consider it as it's the only game in town...but functionality of the body design/screen continues to be a disappointment given how I use that feature...shooting raw and using in camera conversion as a major point...let alone instant access to the menu via Q button. Just more comfortable to than staring at the ground and looking a the EVF...why limit yourself? To actually buy this the internals/software would have to really be leaps and bounds above the X-Pro2...not sure if it is for me. Question for you...how many of the other ambassadors like yourself were hesitant or opposed to changing the screen? Where did the major push for that feature come from...I assume marketing/design areas of Fuji...

I think opinions were divided. A vast majority of the guys and gals wanted a tilt screen of some kind. I think I was pretty much in the minority of not wanting one. TBH though, the camera (screen appreciation aside) really leaps and bounds above the X-Pro2 - but it does depend on what you need. If you find the AF, and other features OK in the XP2, then there perhaps isn't a reason to upgrade. For me, the camera is much more advanced than the X-P2 for the features I need.

I get that the X-T3 may not be the most fun for some in regards to shooting, but I'm sure it makes your wedding gigs much easier? Or is it a matter of feel and access to buttons that's off-putting? Although I am shooting with an X-E3, I have access to using the ETERNA simulation (which isn't available in the camera itself), so this would be a great thing. What lens have the beach b&w photos in the first minutes of the video been shot with? Bokeh looks so shallow. Plus, the b&w conversion is wonderful... is it your own personal editing? Other than that, the new film simulation is gorgeous! There is a color esthetic that other manufacturers just don't manage to create. I like the minimalistc small LCD for film like information, but I agree, it would have been to be backlit, plus, the LCD fully articulating. Like that, they will loose many potential customers....

Kevin, don't you think it would be a better solution to not have a screen at all on XPro, or to have two versions of it? For ppl who are using screen to review pictures this hidden lcd is frustrating as hell, and if Fuji wants photographers to focus on shooting and not reviewing pictures then they should show some guts and do what Leica have done with M-D and M10-D series - removing lcd completely. Being in the middle - having but not having lcd - neither justifies Fuji's "new philosophy" neither satisfies modern/regular photographer. Great overview of the camera btw, you are the reason I own X100F, I lovin' it!
