The Bottom Line
================================================================================
Fujifilm's X-E4 is a no-brainer among rangefinder style APS-C hybrid cameras. I think it's a more complete and satisfying hybrid than anything in Sony's current a6 series lineup; it's so good as a photographer's camera alone that it's a warning shot across the bow for Leica's next generation CL - if and when one comes out. Excellent as always Hugh! Can't click the notification fast enough! I have borrowed the X-E4 from a friend , who also has an X-T4 and a GFX 50R....called me and wanted it back after a few days!! He never did that to me with the borrowed GFX. He simply smiles when he talks about how it handles for street photography.

    Love this video! I just purchased the X-E4 as my new short film camera. Since everything I shoot will be tripod or gimbal, the lack of IBIS is no big deal at all to me. And I always go for shorter takes (though I will most likely get an external hard drive for 10 bit). I also got the 27mm f2.8 pancake with the camera and now shopping for a second, possibly third, prime and am BLOWN AWAY by how great the Fujifilm glass is. Not to mention the color profiles which have me wondering if I will shoot flat at all. Thanks for the comprehensive review. I'm stoked to be a Fuji user now!

    I believe this camera does NOT have the screen markers to help you compose ultra wide screen ratio say 21:9, necessary for a true "cinematic" feel, right? Do you not find the auto focus not so accurate and most lenses have noisy motors for video?

  • @richnewman

    @richnewman

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ManlyHK1 No idea. I prefer shooting in 16:9. Also, I don't use auto focus. No actual cinematographer would use it. Manual focus to control the shot. Also don't use stabilization either--I use a gimbal and tripod. The aspect ratio is pretty far down on the list of things I consider "cinematic."

    I had concerns about the ergonomics when I swapped from the X-E3 to the X-E4. However the X-E4 with its so-called worse ergonomics has enabled me to get images not possible using the X-E3 simply due to the flip-screen. That screen is a huge plus ergonomically.

That said, while I still have one foot in the Nikon system where I've lived since the FM2 in about 1983, I'm also shooting an X-100F and an X-E3 and totally agree with your assessment of the E4 being a sweet-spot camera for lots of uses. I'd love the bigger sensor, faster processor/auto-focussing of the XE4, but really like the XE2 form factor with the additional buttons, dial and controls. I don't use video. I've also heard it said that the XE4 minimalist design is aimed at newbies to digital photography who wouldn't have a clue what to do with, and be put off by, the buttons, not at enthusiasts or professionals. It is really interesting that people comment that it doesn't have a grip and that you feel that people will drop the camera almost. Well can I just give you the example that people hold smart phones every day or cell phones as you call them in the United States and yes occasionally you drop your phone but you adapt your hands to hold it. I teach Photography and one of the first things I teach people is actually how to hold a camera. And we will just adapt and I would typically use a style where I call it the waiter position. What is the weight of position? Well it's essentially laying your left-hand flat and the camera sit in your hand, almost fingers touching the bottom of the lens underneath and this is your base and you're right and then becomes you're trigger.

I'd love to get a 16mm prime pancake style lens for the camera to reduce the weight and bulk, but the only lenses that fit this category are Sony's 16mm f2.8 pancake lens or the 16-50mm PZ lens that is often thrown in with the Sony a6000, and neither lens is all that great in terms of optical performance. Both are actually old lenses that were originally designed to go with the Sony NEX-6 camera, which had a resolution of just 16MP, and they don't handle the higher resolution of the a6600 well. I used to own an a6000 and the 16-50 kit lens was OK with that camera, but not stellar. If Sony would just update both the 16-50 and the 16mm... but they haven't seen fit to do so. So, this leads me to consider the Fuji XE-4 with a Fuji 16mm prime, which will be lighter and more compact than the Sony. Ideal for landscapes and architectural photography, which I do a lot of. I also like the camera's manual shutter speed and aperture controls, which means I don't have to dive into a menu to change either shutter speed or aperture, and can't easily forget my settings. What's not so good, though, is the round eyepiece for the viewfinder. As I wear glasses with a high-index prescription, the round eyepiece makes it hard for me to see the entire viewfinder clearly. If it wasn't so expensive and Sony offered a decent 16mm compact prime, the A7C would work well as an alternative. Even though the viewfinder in that camera is smaller than its alpha-series counterparts, at least I can see all four corners. Yeah, I know, Sony loves to position itself as the Mercedes or BMW of the camera world and almost a Leica wannabe and charges a premium for its products...

    I was really torn about this camera and I wanted to get it but I went with the XS 10 instead and I don't regret my decision at all but there's that Noreen feeling about. I wish I had gone for this camera but that's okay. I probably will at some point on both went there is stock available of this particular camera or I may even go for the smaller X pro series. I just love what Fuji film do they have made Photography for the people. And I talk about the people in the sense that they are affordable for people to buy and use. With all due respect to Nikon, Sony and Canon they are pricing themselves out of the market with their big flash cameras with 50 megapixels with all due respect that is a niche market for pro photographers. Those particular companies are not looking at what is really going on. I teach Photography as I said before and what I'm finding is people are coming to asking me what's the camera can just thought I get my hands on to get started and the first brand I think of is Fuji film look no further there's 10 or 11 different models that you can go to that would suit their needs words when I look at the other manufacturers all of them have their deficiencies, and I don't recommend their cameras and I'm traditionally a Nikon shooter and I love their gear and Canon make great cameras as well. Fuji fil they just do it well for the common person in the street and I know that might sound a bit cliche as there market is street cameras, but you can do so much more with a Fuji film camera than Jess Street Photography. Hey! I just cannot decide between the X-T30 and the X-E4 and it is going to be my first ever camera. I mainly plan on using it for photography. Both are the same price where I live. I think X-E4's screen would be great for selfies with friends and family, however too many people say the ergonomics and grip of X-E4 is less than acceptable...

  • @fredbloggs545

    @fredbloggs545

    You should not listen to other peoples views on ergonomics as they are subjective. It needs to feel right in YOUR hands, not theirs! If you are able to handle them, then go and do that. If not, then the X-T30 with its central EVF may be more suited to you if you are a left eye shooter or glasses wearer. Although the X-E4 is smaller, once you put a large lens on it the difference in size and weight becomes a moot point. Either camera will be capable of producing images beyond your ability so pick the body you like, is it a dSLR style or rangefinder style you want? Have you considered second-hand, the X-E3 or other older body? A lot less and just as capable, plus you have spare cash for a lens.

    @@burakhuseyinkunt8053 The X-E3 is excellent, but has a fixed screen. I have it and the X-E4. The X-E4 is "better" in that other than the flippy screen, the autofocus is a bit snappier, probably not enough for a new user to notice, there are more PDAF autofocus points, but plenty for you on the X-E3, a negligible increase in mpix from 24 to 26 and a faster processor that you won't miss. The X-E4 has added a bunch of in-camera firmware settings but it is unlikely that you'll use them. They were important to me, but my needs are very specific to the later models, otherwise I would have stuck with my X-E3. You can get a lot of camera by looking at the 24mpix X-Trans III cameras in the X-E and X-T line. But do watch out for the lack of a flip screen if that matters, a flip screen can make the difference between getting a shot and not. You could look at the even older 16mpix X-Trans II models like the X-E2 but while still giving excellent results, the autofocus is a tad slower, you might be frustrated by it.

    I gotta say I agree with 99% of your take on the two cameras, with the exception of the build quality being equal. I think the X-E4 feels much lighter and somewhat flimsier. I have my eye on this camera but after reading many reviews, it seems that it's NOT suitable for video film making because 1) most lenses don't have image stabilisation and 2) it has no "screen markers" like Sony has that helps you set the film's aspect ratio to wider cinema-style size. Also many of Fuji's own lenses have noisy motors and are not very good with changing auto focus. So this camera is best used as a stills camera than for movies. Any comments?

    Been looking at the X100V, X-E4 and X-Pro 3 for a while, found this video and subscribed because I really enjoy your delivery - you give me Jeff Goldblum vibes which I dig. I'm also no closer to making a decision... I love the idea of the X100V for it's fixed 35mm equiv. focal length and fast sharp glass and full manual control, but I worry I'd miss being able to switch out lenses for different situations. I love the look of the X-E4, but I worry the lack of certain buttons (ISO, focus mode, extra scroll wheel on the rear) which the X100V and X-Pro 3 has would annoy me. I then think about the X-Pro 3 and think it's perhaps a bit too big for a daily "carry everywhere" camera and then rotate back to the X100V again...

    On the X-E4 ISO is assigned by default to the front command dial. Once you have figured out that ISO isn't an issue with this sensor, you are likely going to swap to relying instead on the three AutoISO range settings and leaving the camera to decide ISO based on your Aperture/Shutter. As a mostly Aperture Priority shooter I use the Exposure Compensation dial because it is usually changing the ISO anyway, the minimum shutter is defined in the AutoISO range you select. I haven't used a fixed ISO since getting a Fuji. AutoISO and EC is simply easier and quicker. Focus Mode can be assigned to a button, touchscreen swipe or Q menu. Hit the button and flick the joystick up/down once to go from S to M and back again. Same for a swipe of the touchscreen. You can assign Focus Mode to the Q menu too. Personally I have never needed to *instantly* switch between focus modes on my previous Fuji's so losing the MCS switch was not a concern to me. The only thing I can remember using the rear dial for is focus magnification. Not bothered with it on the X-E4 as I use Focus Peaking with manual lenses.

I currently have an Olympus E-PL3, with four Zuiko lenses and I love the compact size of the system. I generally shoot street and landscape photography, but have no interest in video, having never used the video function on my Olympus in 9 years! FufiFilm APS-C seems like an obvious path for me to go, in the hope that I can keep my kit lightweight and travel friendly. However, I’m also curious to know if I will get better quality images, shifting from the micro four-thirds system to APS-C, given that one of my main considerations up to this point has been the Olympus O-MD E-M5 MK iii? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great reviews, they are highly informative, impartial and entertaining. Thanks N

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.

    As you crank ISO, you introduce not only noise, but color shifts and a reduction in dynamic range. With this said, setting weight aside, full frame will give you ore headroom (though at the same depth of field, much of that advantage disappears). You may want to look at the full frame Sony a7c with a couple of their new ultra compact primes.

    on the subject of Canon's Mirroless APS-C lineup, I gotta say that I'm very, very dissapointed with the direction they took. Or rather the lack of. We first had some very entry level cameras that looked like point & shoot with an interchangeable lens mount. Okay, fair enough, the price is correct, and the EF-M lenses are not the greatest, but who cares for an entry level crowd anyway? They'll always be good enough. Then they released the M5 and M6 that had vrey good controls and design, and with the M5, you even had a very decent EVF and very good build quality. The price went up with those two bodies but seeing the improvement, that was expected. There the need of higher quality glass came, and was pretty much never full filled by Canon. Then came the M50 wich is basically an entry level version of the M5, getting back to entry level crowd... but then they release the M6 mark ii with a 32MPx sensor for.... reasons? this makes sense in the 90D as it has acces to better glass and is basically Canon's equivalent of the Nikon D500 with better resolution, and reduced size... but where is the M5 mark ii? I mean the M6 is nice and all but I'm not paying that much money for a camera without an EVF (that you need to buy on the side) and a lackluster lens lineup. I mean heck, if it wasn't for Sigma we'd probably still be waiting for decent EF-M glass. Whay do you mean the M6 mk ii is replacing the M6 AND M5? And now there's rumors of Canon killing off the EF-M mount to release an APSC mirrorless with RF mount a-la Nikon with the Z50, to follow what they were doing with the DSLR all having the EF mount. Sound like the worst time ever to buy an EF-M camera to me, that's a shame because it could have been really good. The lens mount is technically bigger than the Fuji X mount, and a tad bit smaller than the Nikon F mount, plenty of space to get good lenses without to much complexity. I mean Nikon have released only 2 mirrorless APS-C bodies and I already have the feeling they're doing a better job. Not even talking about Fujifilm, that would be a bloodbath
