It's a two-way stream; the student has to have the desire & has to put in the effort to learn. At 17 I was kicked out of my house. I started working full-time while finishing up high school. I graduated early just so that I could keep working. Eventually I decided to go to community college and take a bunch of nursing classes while I continued to work 40 hours a week as a landscaper. Sometime around then I also became a big pot head. My grades pretty much sucked but I did manage to transfer to my local 4 year state school at the end of it. As a 21 year old in the 3rd year of college, still woking full-time (now as a mechanic), still a pot head, I decided "fuck it, I'mma be a doctor." I quit smoking, managed my work hours, took on heavier semester, studied longer hours, stuck around for a 5th year and got 2 bachelors degrees (biochem and biology). I went from 12 credit semesters of 1.6's and 2.0's taking 23 credit semesters and getting 3.95's. I studied my ass off for MCATs and got 90th percentile with 98th percentile in biochem. I took a gap year where I shadowed doctors in infectious disease and ICU, I became a volunteer firefighter, I became an ER scribe. Now I'm 24 and I'm happy to say I'll be starting med school this July (: I went from a landscaping pot-head at community college with straight C's to a straight-A medical student who fights fires on the side. PS your videos gave me some motivation and guidance during the last 2-3 years. Thanks!

Dr. Buck! I just discovered your channel and have been binge watching your videos over the past two days! Absolutely love them and your story. My college experience is similar to yours in which I got a 1.7 my first semester and was almost dismissed. I put no effort into high school and did not have the slightest idea of how to study. I struggled over the next 4 years but ended up graduating with honors. I met with an admissions counselor at a medical school that I really want to go to and after they looked over my transcripts, resume etc, I was told a score I would need to reach on the MCAT in order to be competitive, due to my subpar GPA. Well I took the MCAT last month and did not reach this score so I will have to put off applying until next year. I’ve been feeling pretty down about this but I know I won’t give up, and I feel even more encouraged after watching your videos, so thank you 😊

I totally love this surgeon, I can absolutely relate to his story, when I decided to go to nursing school I had to take chemistry - I dropped out from my first chemistry class, had a shitty teacher , she had a heavy accent and she was definitely not gifted in the teaching arena. I wasn’t going to give up, so I registered to retake this chemistry class with a different professor, turns out chemistry was very easy, chemistry is an exact science, is very very easy, loved it ! I got a 100 on the midterm and 98 on the final, and I got a job at the tutoring center as a chemistry tutor! I have to say that math helped me, I was a math tutor for a while. Don’t allow one bad teacher take anything away from you! You can do it, you just have to want it!

I wasn't motivated and no one is a doctor in my family. I come from a low income household and my parents didn't go to college. Turning my life around, I don't really have the guidance and financial freedom to get to medical school at the moment but I am almost done with my undergraduate degree in Biology, Pre-Medicine, unfortunately, I pay out of pocket for school because I lost all my scholarships and financial aid. This video really gave me inspiration to be better, do better, and want bigger for my life! You don't know me personally, but you really put a stamp on some key points for me so thank you. Joseph Best Hello I have a question did you raise your gpa drastically from a 0.4 to a 3.8 by being enrolled and doing good in AP classes too? I ask this because I was thinking about doing AP classes this year. Freshman year I had a 2.53 gpa and now as a sophomore I have all As and one C in Spanish. But not only that I also got three AP recommendation and they said I should strongly consider enrolling myself in those classes next year. Also by the way AP classes is worth a 4.5 on a 4.0 scale. Do you think by any chance if I go good in those AP classes meaning get between a (4.0-4.5) I have a chance of having my gpa raise from a 2.5 to a 3.7/3.8 by the end of my senior year. I really want to go to a 4 year University then go to Medical School then do residency and lastly complete my goal of either being a transplant surgeon or a trauma surgeon.

@@josephwright5499 I believe you can definitely raise your GPA to a 3.8 in two years. I started taking honors and AP my junior year, please take those classes they recommended you. AP English and APUSH quite literally changed the way my mind approaches problem solving. Take these AP classes but take them for you, not your GPA. My objective in High School was to make it to Duke University. Growing up believing I was stupid made me determined to make it into the best college in my state. As someone who despises school, that objective was the only thing that got me up in the morning. I did not achieve that goal, but the pursuit was more important than the destination. I'm now a much better me and you can be a much better you. Make that 3.8 GPA your objective and pursue it with everything you've got, if you make it or not I promise your self development will be far greater than your GPA

This video is pretty much one of the only reasons that I have left to pursue my dream and/or desired career path. I currently have a 2.6 GPA. I ultimately want to transfer to a 4 year next semester after getting my associates in liberal arts and pursue a bachelors with a concentration in Psychology. Eventually I want to obtain a doctorate level degree in psychology and focus on Clinical. Potentially even open up my own practice. It's quite a noble aspiration and probably non-realistic, but I have been so fearful that my horrible GPA will hold me back. I decided to go back to college after being out of high school for 4 years and the adjustment has been difficult with how financially strained I am. I slipped into bouts of depression and have been in and out of therapy and counseling all while trying to maintain my grades. Just want you to know how much this video means to someone who can relate in such a significant way...

I start college again in January and have had major anxiety about that first semester screwing me over. Thank you so much for sharing this (even though it was years ago), and thanks to YT for recommending it to me.

I went to a grammar school and let me tell you, EVERY SINGLE person had a tutor, even if you think you need they tinniest of help, make the investment. Its worth it !!! Also, those same people who have tutors and never mention it, are the same people that brag about natural ability!

Im 21. Went from failing out of school my first semester as a freshman with basically no gpa. Transferred to another school and raised my gpa to about. 2.1, transferred to a community college and raised it to a 2.5. Transferred one more time and now Im at an hbcu in huntsville. My first semester there i got to a 3.4 gpa, the next semester i got a 3.5, the next semester i got a 3.6 and i didn’t do my best this past semester. I overworked myself and grades just got posted. Dropped to a 3.1. But guess what?? I want to be a doctor and those who quit never become what they want to become. Hang in there but just know your not in the boat by yourself. We got this💪🏾

Felt like I was watching a video of my future self. 1.8 GPA and on academic probation my first semester. I literally thought ever other premed was smarter than I was and felt my dr aspirations slipping away. The next semester all I did was mimic the study habits of my classmates and boom I was on the Dean's list. Sophomore year I took organic chem and scored in the 96th percentile. This is when I realized I could do this. Now I am currently a first year med studnet and I love where I'm headed. It doesn't take a genius to make it to med school. It takes confidence in yourself and the will to work hard to figure out how you need to study. I didn't perfect my study style until senior year. You can do it!! GOOD LUCK

Im glad that i came across this video, almost everyone I know among my friends are either trying to go into dental school, veterinary, or medical. In my case I want to go into medical school. I goofed off for the first year and a half of my college and I was suspended from my 4 year university and then was suspended from a community college. Yes I wasnt taking anything serious at the time and I didnt know how I should study to get the grades I wanted to. No one really guided me and being the first one in my entire family to ever go to college was in itself a challenge. I am trying my hardest to raise my GPA back up from a 1.64 and now have raised it back up to a 2.06. I hope to finish with a 3.0 but it is really a challenge, especially when people laugh at you saying you wont. I have a lot to prove and when I do it will only make it sweeter of a victory. I wish I had a mentor like your physics teacher that could help guide me and show me the way. After all it is me that will take the steps.

But after dropping from college i decided to do an engineering apprenticeship but i discovered Radiology through medical engineering with the use of medical imaging etc. and applied to go back to college and study a combined science course of Anatomy, Psychology, biology etc and iv'e been anxious and stressed to think i'm not smart enough to make it into medicine and i might regret this, but this video and your channel really helps me realise with hardwork it's possible. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing your story. I totally feel you on this. I was a pre-med student and graduated with a chemistry, studied a ton hoping to get in. Every time I try to do well, I would always mess up the exam. I ended up getting a really low 2.1 gpa. In the beginning, I thought I wasn't good enough to become a doctor because of the GPA, but in reality I was just 1) taught wrong, 2) fed wrong info, and 3) hanging out with pre-meds that were just plain jerks. So I applied to an engineering school that almost equivalent to a med school in terms of difficulty just to see how well I do and whether I am still good at school. Right now major Mech engineering and started to Ace my exams. I slowly realize nothing was wrong with me and everyone is intelligent in some way, shape, or form. I even still remember the equations from Physics 1 and 2 from kinematics, including integrals. One day I may think about coming back to medicine, but right now I am enjoying my new major, plus there more creativity here. I think the best way is to get a really good tutor and study on your own.
