The divorce rate in med school and residency had to be close to 80%. My fiancé was asking me last night what I’m going to do when we have kids and I’m on call? I said “I’m going to goto the hospital”

In some Residency/Fellowship programs, the divorce rate can exceed 100%. The Chief Resident tells that at the interview. It is important to find a partner, in the same field that understands the hard work, hours, etc. Best to have a prenup. Have kids after on of you has finished training, unless there is a lot financial support. Avoid accidental pregnancies. Quite a few suicides, litigation, etc due to careless behavior.

I think i'll be okay with being single throughout medical school/ residency =) ... The person that I was dating for 5+ years broke up with me during my MCAT prep because I wasn't spending enough time with them. Imagine if we'd stayed together through med school. Forget about it. Definitely find someone that's in a similar field, or is truly committed to you and understands your ambition.

Dude yeah, a similar thing happened to me. My girlfriend and I broke up because of my study/work/hospital internship (unpaid, of course). 3.5 year relationship. It's very very tough to digest, but I know if we couldn't make it through my premed, medical school wasn't in the question. She was a physics major (we started dating in HS), she was ambitious as well, but she didn't get it.

As a non-medicine individual currently dating a senior internal medicine resident man , here are my thoughts. We started dating at the beginning of his residency and I had a lot of negative feedback from friends saying that it would never work. I agree, that the demand of residency never ceases to impress me. It was a difficult adjustment at first, because even though I consider myself to be understanding there were times when I felt discouraged. But what I can say is that we truly do cherish the time that we do have, whether it be a quick phone call or even meeting him for a quick cup off coffee. I've learned how to be creative when it comes to finding time and doing my best I can to support him. If you truly want eachother it can work but if its an "iffy" relationship it's easy to grow distant .

I think certain nurses would understand. I worked ICU up until June (now in residency I stay home), but I saw how hard the doctors in my unit worked, how they were at the nurse and patient's beckon call. So I understood doctors are first married to medicine and their patient's needs and then married to their spouse. I cannot tell you how many weddings, family events and friend hangouts I attended completely alone, it was hard, but I think a strong spouse would definitely understand. I will say this, I always tell my friends not to marry medical students/medical residents unless the end of residency is coming very soon haha. Great video.

I didn’t get the last part of this video! We can get fired for dating someone we are working with? What ? To be honest , it was painfully hard to date in medical school !! At the tender age of my early twenties I really craved that while studying depressed notes of biochemistry and anatomy!! But nobody wanted to date me at that time. The guys all wanted that Barbie doll blondie hot chic of the class !! It seriously felt like high school where you have one popular hot girl with all guys after her/them!! Today I look back and I can’t believe I allowed that to make me feel depressed, lonely , unwanted and unsupported !!! Today I don’t need anybody’s support . I love to take care of myself. I wish I had the strength to not be so needy for love , support and affection at that time !! I guess the depressed studying made me feel like that but I should have been stronger . But yeah today I have no problem attracting guys . I have confidence today . I didnt do residency but I am never going to chase any man ever again and put myself in that hurting spot. Heck if I knew there was no love in medical school I would have postponed going to medical school and got married first . We all need love and support in the medical profession . I am still single today but not because I couldn’t find love in medical school !! But seriously medical school dating is horrible. It is painfully nonexistent.

I’m trying to be as accommodating to his schedule. But he did go to a top ranked school and I was really nervous the first date. I didn’t think it went well which is why I asked him the second time. Part of me is also like am I chasing him?? I asked if he’s interested in a second date and he said he was. Part of me is also like why is he interested in me? Lol I have nothing to offer as much as he did. I am considering pharmacy school.

You are an interesting person. However, there are times I watch you and ask myself, "Why are you watching him, Missy?" I mean, your life really relates to nothing in my life. I'm not in medical and never had that desire. I'm a 47-year-old freelance writer who has raised her children alone for about 14 years now. I stay at home. I don't date. And I guess with a few long relationships that failed, I wonder if I will ever date again? I feel that boat sailed around 2006. It's been a long time, and the truth is I don't find myself longing for that type of commitment anymore. I value simple things like poetry, art, listening to birds chirp and solitude. I suppose I'm boring. Maybe I'm waiting for someone special to come to me that will take me as I am. That's what it will take for me to ever consider a relationship again. But, you're fun and I bet your advice does help some people. So, I'll probably keep watching to entertain myself. I always find myself watching on my whimsical days. Lol. Peace. P.S. - Your videos have encouraged me to be more open with my thoughts in a straightforward way instead of just writing them in poems that most people don't have the ability to grasp anyway. That's a good takeaway, right? (giggles)

ouch lol 😂, but i agree, all the medstudents and drs i see on the ward are all nerdy and weird, guess i see why most female drs or viceversa are single

The reason why female doctors are more "single" than male doctors is because of status. Male doctors will date woman regardless of their job/status. For example ; Female doctors would have a harder time dating male nurses, whereas male doctors do not care about their job and will date them. Women want someone as high achieving and ambitious as them but men care less about that. Men care more about looks. A lot of it is simple biology. Women want the male w/ most resources. Men want the woman with best looks/most fertile.
