Also, working in hospital will give you access to the OR and shadowing opportunities (if you live in a state that employs AA's) If not, you can shadow CRNA's or even Anesthesiologists to get an idea. I personally didn’t get any Cs but it might be okay if you got lower grades in lower level chem classes with an upwards trend in later classes and a decent overall gpa. But like was said in the video. In my opinion the biggest impact you can make is getting high quality healthcare work experience. Depending on your overall GPA it may make more sense work on getting a killer gre score. But also check the requirements. Some schools require certain pre rec grades

Yes, medical work experience isn't strictly required but HIGHLY recommended. Some of our older students have had a previous medical careers such as Paramedic, respiratory therapy, nursing, anesthesia technician, surgical tech. Those coming out of college with 0-1 gap years typically have experience as clinical techs, pharmacy techs, MA, phlebotomy, patient transport, dialysis tech. Only a few in my cohort have no/minimal medical work experience (volunteer/shadowing only) Apply for some medical jobs! depending on your work experience you might have to start in a very entry level role or get a certification. If I had to get a quick cert, I'd probably do EMT for clinical tech or phlebotomy. Some hospitals will take you without certifications but it depends on your experience and the specific hospital.

Hi, are there any applicants that were working through the program?

Realistically this program is too demanding to do any work other than maybe maintaining an existing side hustle. None of my classmates have employment while in the program.

What do you suggest to do to get healthcare experience

Depending on your background you may have to be less picky. Just apply to a lot of jobs, be willing to commute. My first healthcare job was emergency department transporter. Later I moved cities to get an anesthesia tech job

If you’re a current college student honestly downplay it. In my experience recruiters will discriminate against you if they think you’re only going to work there a short time before moving on (but you should do just that)

Anesthesia tech works on maintaining equipment and supplies. A CAA manages the patients airway, medications, and life support.

Hi Jonah! I am interested in pursuing the CAA route and I loved watching your video. I do have couple questions for you. 1) I took the GRE last year and got a 156 Verbal, 153 Quant, and a 4.5 Analytical writing and my GPA is a 3.96. Do you think I should retake my GRE because of my lower quant score? 2) What would you focus on writing about in the personal statement? I have about 800 hours of patient care experience having worked and volunteered in Physical therapy as an aide, do you think it would be good to include that on the application and on the personal statement? thank you!

That GRE isn't great but isn't bad either. Take an ETS practice test and if you get the same score then just apply with that and see how it goes. You have a strong GPA. If you get a significantly higher score in the practice test then consider retaking the real GRE. Checkout the personal statement video on my channel. Clinical experience will be a critical part of the story you need to tell. Good luck!

When I was deciding between MD and CAA as a college student, I thought that the comparison of titles would be a big factor. As I've met more med students, CA1-2-3s, and attendings, they have all pretty much told me that CAA is a great route and encourage me to do it rather than MD/DO. Once you account for hours worked, where as an MD the expectation is >40hrs/week and as a CAA 40hrs is the base with overtime paying $1-2k per day. It comes down to your ego and if you can tolerate having a title that nobody understands, having to always explain what a CAA does. You won't earn the same level of prestige or respect in the eyes of the non-medical community but in every other aspect of time, money, and the work itself it is an amazing job. I will discuss exactly this in a future video

What's wrong with taking the GRE? The entrance exam is intended to show the standardized measure of your academic aptitude. This is something the GRE accomplishes.
