Workers that do not have a thing that has market demmand are just replaceable. I live in a 3rd world where the minimum wage is 1.5$/hr. We have higher taxes than most country's, our products are more expensive and the public services are mediocre, but the economy rules are the same. If the economy says that's your price, so it is. Doctors have good income all over the world because they have unique skills, their job is hard and demanded. Can you say that about an Uber driver? It might SEEM like wallstreet(or investment) people don't contribtue anything, but they help EVERY single other industry. The stock market is a fund distribution system. It funnels funds from savings, where they don't do anything to investments(i.e actually using the money to make something), which leads to increase in EVERY single other industry's productivity and supply. Its how every company gets the funds to actually work and do something. Without it, we would see SO many less companies, since in order to make one you would have to be profitable from the start or have a insane amount of money already with you.

    Because pediatricians are a dime a dozen. They’d be paid more had they chosen a different specialty that wasn’t so popular. Like try finding a neurologist who specializes in multiple sclerosis. They are hard to find, so they get paid more. And most times patients have to travel long distances just to get care for whatever disease they have. But pediactrics is a popular field to practice in. Also I believe the system does value pediatricians and kids. Thankfully pediatricians are everywhere, if kids need treatment. Those who chose to be a pediatrician knew the pay disparity. As they said, they do it to help kids, not for the pay. If anything, the healthcare system does not value adults who are sick with incurable diseases who live in chronic pain.

    I think people forget that they also have to have huge insurance covers, probably hundreds of thousands in student loan debt, and be prepared for lawsuits if a patient complains about not getting what they want for treatment. It's the same with lawyers too. You are working with people's lives with very sensitive situations and people can utterly screw you over if they don't like you. I work in mental health and with teens and thankfully I have good rapport with my clients and everything, but we meet behind closed doors and if they DIDN'T like me, they could easily make up something to get me fired or in trouble, if they didn't like the outcome of our counseling session. Evil people are out there and it just takes one person on a bad day to destroy your entire livelihood. Helping professions can often pay well but the higher the pay day the higher the risk of getting screwed over. That's why I like my comfortable salary that was enough to pay off my student loans over a decade and start saving for a house and living in a decent apartment in a safe neighborhood for the time being.

If there was not financial stability and ability to pay the cost for that long education, while having the stress and responsibility for people's lives in your hands, no one would bother going into medicine so it better be somewhat lucrative.

There's no way in to justify this people getting payed so much money. I'm sorry but it's the truth. She went elsewhere (within the same state, just a different hospital system) and got a 135k salary increase for maintaining and doing the same job. Don't go into medicine for money. The strife, hardwork, and sacrifices made in school and than later in life while in practice cannot be fueled by money (or potential to make it). @@dragonrings14 You're right, it is relative. Not sure about America, but where I live student debt for doctors is significantly more than other careers. Average degree here is three years, but six for doctors. Our first (soon to be last) year is fully subsidised, so that's two years of uni vs five. However, many people don't get into med school the first time so they have to finish your degree (you do one year of a specific degree then apply to med school) so that they can apply through postgraduate entry which takes another two years (three to four if you decide to do an entirely different degree just in case you don't get in a second time). On top of that, the fee per year is higher for med school. Much of three of those years is spent in hospitals which you don't get paid for yet no one has energy to work, but they still have to cover living costs while they're there. Usually that will mean more student loans. Our student loans are way less than America and we don't have interest, but as Mama Jones painfully highlighted, doctor salaries are less than half of the salaries in the States (I'd take the US' higher student loans any day). So you're right. It is relative. Fot the work that doctors do and high skills they need to have, it's worth every cent.

    All those numbers are to show that doctors live comfortably. Lately, I realized that American definition of middle class is the ability of a person and family to feel content, to feel enough, to feel secure. If there are short comings, they can easily remedies without much effort or cost.

  • @jcolonna12

    @jcolonna12

    They are definitely not middle class doctors. In American you are starting to see the erosion of what it means to be the middle class. With the rampant inflation in the US everyone’s purchasing power is drastically reducing. For example grocery shopping in some regions increased by 20 or so percent. So if you don’t get a 20 percent promotion or earn 20 percent more income you are losing money every year. Something similar could be said with other categories like housing, rent, gas, cost of goods, etc. So to what you said, that definition is what it used to mean, but as prices continue to go up, this is become less and less true unless they start shifting the income ranges for the middle class

  • @benu_bird

    @benu_bird

    It also depends upon how much they have to pay back in student loans. A doctor can easily go $500-750k in debt for their education. Doctors here in Europe pay nothing or very little for tuition. They still earn high salaries, but they don't have the debt. And the middle class in the US has been eroding at a very fast rate. Due to inflation and increasing cost of housing, people need to earn more and more to remain middle class. Look up "the amount of money need to live comfortably". It's lists how much you need in each state to live comfortably. The amount is WAY over the average salary.

    This is really important to know, especially for medical students and residents. Money is often a topic that people in training learn about until they're well into finishing residency and ready to sign contracts with hospitals/clinics

    Now I know all these places be REALLY screwing over the lower paid positions that make their job possible. Without all of the staff behind the scenes none of these docs could do anything they do. Please listen to me, as someone who works in healthcare you all need to rally for higher pay for your underlings. Because some of us still live paycheck to paycheck while we make what all these docs do possible. I appreciate the transparency of this video but it only saddens me that more and more people will LEAVE healthcare because they only make like a tiny fraction of what these doctors are offered. Support your team members, just your voice and support higher pay for them.

    Absolutely agree. Doctors (and to a lesser degree nurses) are the headliners in the medical field, but it all grinds to a halt without all the hundreds of support staff.

    Yep, Nurses often get the shaft, and Junior doctors do absolutely insane hours for very little, Orderlies, cleaners, medical support staff all don't make what they should. I work in health IT, and know I make a bit less than I would out in "the business world" for the same role (small advantage in health IT, we can work pretty much anywhere, so harder to screw us over as we'll just leave), but like the work environment and flexibility, as well as knowing my work goes towards something constructive, rather than some rich person bank balance go up.

    the doctor's position in a community is so respected because of the sacrifices and hard work it takes to finally reach that position so i think that's why their salaries are so high

    Imaging techs. . . Not only do they often write the reports that doctors depend upon for their diagnosis, they do the actual work of using the tools. Imagine paying 7-figures to a mechanic who can't use a wrench or a meter. Imaging tech wages hover around the national median income. They're not low, but compared to the doctors whose work they enable, they are criminally undervalued.

    There are lots of techs and nurses. Not paying them more, healthcare is too expensive already. Most people just self medicate and dont even get healthcare already.

    Does anyone know why those working in medicine in the US are paid so much more than in the UK? I’m just curious about why the gap is so big because that was a big shocker for me

    The US has a private healthcare system, UK is public - at least that's my best guess

    @lukeqin90 I was going to say the same thing. Also, the structure of our healthcare system pays doctors more for procedures than preventive medicine. We saw this during Covid when places were not able to do elective procedures and so were not bringing in as much money as they were used to. Kids don't typically require AS MANY office procedures that can be billed for (i.e. cyst removal, joint injections, OMT, etc.) and so most pediatricians do not have as many opportunities to earn RVUs which can greatly increase any physician's pay.

    I’m an ups truck driver with no college degree and I made roughly $140k last year. We make between $40-49hr but also get mileage pay otr. My potential tops out around 200k so I invest in real estate on the side.

    Is that a rough gig? I mean do they work tf out of you, or is it pretty nice and steady throughout the day? How do they make so much driving and delivering packages? Seems like too good to be true.

    Yeah when you don’t account for work-life balance, stress, not making good money until you’ve gone to school and worked for well over 10 years, having debt over your head for a decade before you’re above water, lost youth studying so that you can slave for money rather than living how you want to. I’d pass if I had unlimited chances.

    Doctore Mike I LOVE your videos especially your reaction videos and I was really hoping you could react to another Chicago Med episode I don't care what episode but I would be amazing if you would. Chicago Med I think might be my favourite medical drama it is soo good and has romance but I don't think it over powers it too much. But also I just love your channel in general. Have a lovely day :)

    Doctor Mike KZread is a Global website and you have subscribers all over the world. You should do a video comparing doctor salaries across the world. In the UK for example despite being a western country our doctors make substantially less than doctors in the USA.
