It's actually an 84" sleeper.. that's the biggest bedroom option Freightliner offered on the Classic

Yep. Since my wife likes to ride along as much as she can, when I ordered my 06 Classic, I spec'd the drivetrain for me and the interior for her. 2006 Classic XL, all black, stainless and polished aluminum on the outside, ISX 15 Cummins, 13 speed and 3.73 ratio, on a 284" wheelbase for me. Fancy interior (can't remember what it's called) with leather and rosewood and the 84" single bunk "condo" with the bed/table combination (like an RV) for her. I've put about 1.5 million miles on it but the drivetrain and front end were completely gone through at just under 1 million. My wife named the truck "The Mistress" shortly after I took delivery.

Out of curiosity, why did you go with the Cummins over the 60 series or Cat?

  • @MikeBrown-ii3pt

@@keyboard101101 While all manufacturers built good engines back then, I actually have several reasons for going with Cummins Power to this day. The Detroit 60 series was definitely a great engine (the 2nd tractor I owned was powered by a 12.7L 60 series). They were probably the most fuel efficient engines out there at the time. However, the torque didn't seem to come on as fast as even the M11 Celect+ that my 1st tractor had. I still own that tractor today but, when I bought the one with Detroit power, my driver and I both got identical loads and ran together. #1 has a M11 Celect+ @400hp and (I believe) 1750 lb/ft while #2 had the 12.7 Detroit @500hp and 1850 lb/ft, otherwise, the specs were identical. That little Cummins "pulled" the Detroit from every stop and up every hill until the higher horsepower of the Detroit took over. I prefer pulling power down low over top end but, if I didn't have a choice, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a tractor with Detroit power now. As far as taking the Cummins over a Cat, that choice pretty much came down to cost. The only experience I have with Cat engines is from a tractor that my dad owned years ago (actually the last one he bought, a Pete 379). It seemed like the torque of the Cat engine was unlimited and, the one time I drove it, I couldn't find a place on the tach where it wouldn't pull. However, the initial cost of the Cat engine when I ordered my Classic back in 2005 was just about double the price of the Cummins. Cat service parts are also more expensive than Cummins or Detroit. I just couldn't justify the extra cost over the short OR long term for an engine with similar power numbers. Even though Cat hasn't produced "on road" engines for well over 10 years, those tractors do still command a premium price compared to similar ones with Detroit or Cummins power but, the maintenance parts for them also still command a premium price.

They’re nice trucks but to pay 2x the price for a 379 with same engine and transmission as a classic is ridiculous. They’re both 20+ year old rattling trucks. Get a classic for 25k put 30 in it at 55k you’re set for years and for 55k you’ll get a nice pete with probably cat overhaul in horizon for another 35k

I owe you a big thank you. I had to have my personal vehicle shipped by transporter so I went through a broker, I got it scheduled a month in advance two days before pick up the broker calls me and tells me no transporters were interested. The broker suggested that I add another two dollars to get a driver interested. I don’t him NO and referred him to the signed contract. Long story short the transporter picks up my truck for the contract price. Never trust a broker , thanks for the advice.

I feel you man so far as the treatment of drivers. But if you think about it, that’s kinda par for the course. I mean if you look at pretty much any truck stop parking lot, you will see a few piss jugs or bottles or piss poured on the ground. Same thing with shit bags. So to reduce that problem, customers like Walmart and others will not allow a driver to stay overnight. Back in the day it wasn’t like that. The other part of that is they do not want to accept the responsibility of a non employee while on their property in case of an incident. So they have you get off the property. Nerve wracking but I get it. Love the content
