Hahaha Matti has set foot in the termite mound, a real sacrilege, daring to compare anything to the monument of photography that is the Leica. The pinnacle of camera marketing, which as soon as it leaves the store, the buyer stands straighter, with a more confident gaze and a small condescending pout at the corner of his lips. The world is divided in two, there is "Leica" and there is the "rest". Is it so difficult to understand? Having a broken Q3 is it a problem to throw a 3,000 € lens in the trash? Only a vulgar person would see a problem with that. I don't have a Leica of course, I'm quite sure I couldn't merit it but I have a poster on my wall and I genuflect every time I walk past...

Hi Matti! Interesting video. I am not stating that this lens is not an excellent value for money ands no value to the Sony lens ecosystem, but your statement about the Q3 replacement is a huge overstatement. Overall, the results that can be achieved with a recent Sony body and this lens can be much better, cheaper and easier to achieve, however, the Q3's lens quality does not even seem to be in the same ball park as the Viltrox 28/1.8. I hope Viltrox is catching up soon, but in the meantime, I would not riticule myself with such a statement.

About Lens, I do not like the 28mm focal length for full frame, I prefer 35mm (or 24mm). Today when someone ask, I recommend Sony Cameras, because there are so many different types of Cameras in Sonys line-up, there are a Sony Camera for everyone and there are plenty of Lenses to choose from for Sony E-mount.

Matti your kidding. Leica gave the Q the same lens formula as its $6,000 M lens, they put in a leaf shutter that x sync to 1/2000 sec., then the lens has OIS. Also, the lens has a macro mode. Since the lens is built in there is no mount slop. To get the same resolution you have to buy a Sony A1 only 50 not 60mp and it costs as much as the Q without the lens

In his summary from 8.50 to 11.45 he basically says you can create pictures that look "a lot like the Leica Q3". In my opinion when you get into gear comparisons there are two main factors, user experience and real world end results. Matt clearly states it's not the same user experience and is only claiming "a lot like" real world end results. "a lot like" is open to interpretation. The bottom line for me with "end results" would be to look at a sizable print of an identical scene with both set ups and see what they looked like. I think the video is targeted at people that already have a Sony and for a few hundred dollars more they can create a very decent 28 POV street photography look. Regards resolution there can't be much real difference between a 40 MP and 60 MP sensor unless you are printing billboards or want to crop a lot, which is one of the beautiful aspects of the Q3, the ability to crop to tighter focal lengths. Your point about the price is well taken, a Sony A74 + 2 good prime lenses could easily take you over $4K and a Sony A75 is almost starting at $4K. Even a 40 MP Asp-c camera + 2 primes will cost close to $3K or more so yes the Q3 offers a lot. It would work for me as I only shoot 28 mm and 50 mm!

The Q lenses are stellar, but easily replicable in IQ with a Fuji and 18mm f/1.4 up to ISO 3200 or higher in B&W. In fact the shooting experience is better on the Fuji. Unfortunately I haven't been able to rent a Leica 28mm and an M body to test, but imo Leica M > Other brands > Leica Q series.

But me being a hobbyist with enough money to afford one, could never justify the spend. Speaking to the comments on the user experience….One does not question what paint brushes Michelangelo “enjoyed” using, but they still today marvel at his results. Likewise, I just don’t understand why so much is made of this “Je ne sais quoi”, or magical enchantment photographers feel from using a Leica,(Sorry, some things even youtube can’t bottle up and convey). Hum your title makes me embarrassed… Sony and Leica are at the 2 ends of photography. The first is high tech, top end specifications, endless menus, numerous programmable function buttons and the other is tradition, simplicity, less buttons to concentrate on the basics of the photo. So even if the viltrox imay be good ( I am afraid it can t be at the level of the Leica… starting by its size) , it can t be compared to the Q line. So if your title was forget the Leica Q3 take the Leica Q (300% more affordable and 90% of the pleasure) it would have been understandable but viltrox vs Leica… it just means you never tried the Q3 :). On my side I have the 2 cameras , one makes me think to my job (efficient , reliable ) and the other makes me think to pure pleasure… and honnestly if you want to stay on Sony technical world , the 28mm f2 is far more near the Leica combination in terms of weight and size… and it cost 200€ on second hand.

I see a few major flaws in your solution: • The Sony A7RV plus a Viltox 28mm f1.8 weight 2.4 lbs vs the 1.6lbs of the Leica Q3. Since size/weight is a major motivator for purchasing the Leica the Sony loses in this regard. • Your option means the purchaser ends up with a Viltrox lens… not a Leica lens. I don’t think anyone could successfully argue that the two are equivalent quality. Interestingly, if you price out a Sony A7RV with a similar GM lens, you’ll find you are right around $5400… not too far from the Leica price wise; but the Sony is still not hand made. The Sony will have nowhere near the build quality of the Leica. Also resale will be far worse on the Sony. Great gear doesn’t mean great pictures… so you must keep in mind a bad photographer with a great camera is still a bad photographer. If you can comfortably afford the Leica, buy the Leica. If you can afford only one… well, I hate to say it, but you cannot “comfortable” afford the Leica.
