I've posted this elsewhere but in the light of this review, I think it worth repeating here: I think that Leica may have missed a trick. Had they given it an APC sensor, I think they would have blown the Fuji VI out of the water. You used the term "gateway drug" ... I reckon that would be a gateway drug to the Leica systems. They obviously couldn't do a full frame version because that would wreck sales of the Q3 (and I'd be very surprised if there were ever to be a Q zoom because that would hammer M sales). But I reckon a zoom APC compact from Leica really would be the bee's knees.

It already exists in the form of the Leica CL, which to be fair is in dire need of a refresh.

  • @acliffalay

    @acliffalay

    18 сағат бұрын

If they did release an APC sensor version, they would need to design a brand new lens, which would be much larger to offer similar wide apertures, the body would likely be larger, and would therefore be significantly more expensive compared to the X100VI. There is a wide gap in Leica's 'entry level' offerings in terms of price, so a £2500 Leica APS-C compact would have a distinct price point in their line up, but would put it in a completely different price category to the other enthusiast compacts like the Ricoh, X100VI.

@@ContraGrain I am aware of the Leica CL, but given that it has interchangeable lenses, its not really in the same market segment. Also it retailed for around $2795 body only, you'd have to factor in lens costs on top. Maybe the best comparison within Leica is the Leica X Series, APC fixed lens, with a variety of fixed focal length and zoom ranges. The X Vario was a lovely looking thing. Note the size of the 28-70mm lens, and the slow aperture range required for an APS-C zoom.

@@acliffalay I agree about the lens requirement (obviously) but I reckon that if Leica did produce such a camera and kept the price low (-ish) specifically with the intent to make life as difficult as possible for the competition, they would sweep up all those who would like a Leica but aren't prepared/can't afford to buy into the M and SL systems and would at the same time create a really serious gateway drug for those systems. In terms of price they would need to go for a minimised profit in order to compete but I reckon it would be worth the effort.

Thanks for mentioning the leaf shutter, with the tiny accessory flash attached, shooting fill flash in daylight is great and is something few current cameras can do. Years ago, i used to shoot with a flash in broad daylight with my Zeiss Ikon Contessa, and i do now with my Lumix LX100 mk i in the same way. I bought an LX100 for a NYC trip in 2019 and fell in love with it. I'm glad Leica has continued with the camera with minimal changes to the controls, the controls are absolutely fantastic for making changes while shooting without fussing with menus or unmarked dials. Considering the capabilities of the camera, which aren't easy to know without using it, the price is a bargain, in my opinion.

Wonderful analysis of the DLux8 and its positioning and appeal. I have recently purchased the LX100 mk1 and mk ii and GX9 just because of the handling and styling - to add more fun back into the image taking experience that can be dulled by my other full frame and MFT cameras. For me, the unique appeal of the LX100 and the Dlux8 is the external aspect ratio control. This changes the way you approach image taking as you are thinking first about aspect rather than as a post production cropping exercise. There are also some nice monochrome options. Well done Leica! It's what the market wants and needs. Had just received my pre order email from local Leica store but already Sold Out when checking the order status!

Hugh, why couldn’t you convince Leica to re-issue their APS-C digital CL? 😊 I love that camera. As you know well, it accepts all the Leica and L-Mount Alliance lenses, M mount lenses with the M-Adapter-L, and Leica R-mount lenses with the R-Adapter-L. I picked up two Leica SF40 flash units for my CL and one I gave away. That flash is larger than the one you showed here, but smaller than the SF60 (which I also have). I wonder if the tiny flash would work on the CL. I was just in Wetzlar for 3 days last week. I didn’t think of looking at the D-Lux-8 and its accessories.

Thoughtful content and honest commentary on D-Lux 8 competition. As a Leica biased photographer, the D-Lux is a good choice for those places where a camera with a removable lens is forbidden (concerts and sports for example) and the Q lens, while fabulous, is too limiting. I took a D-Lux 7 to Coachella a few years ago and loved what I was able to capture with it.

I think the feel and the experience are the most important for this type of point-and-shoot cameras. Plus having a Zoom lens, Leica color science, EVF, and pocketable size, otherwise, I’ll be stuck with my phone for daily photography which is frustrating. Now let's say one takes their best shot with this camera and wants to print large can we just use an AI tool to upscale and not worry too much about 17mp? Would you try that?

Thank you, Hugh. I have been waiting for your video ever since I ordered my D-Lux 8 on May 23rd. Since then, I have heard so much negativity about this camera (mostly from people who have never even used one) that I began to question my purchase. But, after listening to your thoughtful commentary, I am glad I made the plunge. A couple of things, however: The D-Lux 8 only goes up to 1/2000 of a second, unlike the D-Lux 7's 1/4000. Why they dropped the speed, I don't know. So the 8 can only flash synch at 1/2000. Secondly, I have made some beautiful 20"x30" prints with my Panasonic GX85, which has 16mp micro 4/3 sensor, so I have no fear that the latter can perform just as well.

I’m sure, like many amateurs I feel I’ve become a slave to the technology and the need to always buy and then upgrade on a regular basis, maybe to the detriment of just actually going out and using any of these amazing tools to capture images. Hugh I totally LOVE your reviews but this one was a bit of a head scratcher. If you go to DPreview and use their side-by-side tool to compare the DLUX7 (I still own the earlier DLUX) and this DLUX 8 it's as you said essentially the same. The prints you gushed over could easily have been made with the PREVIOUS DLux 7. The key seems to be about the "experience" and gestalt which it appears is something to consider when it is SOOOOOO close in visual cues to the Q. If the processor is from the Q then THAT would be something. But there's no mention of that. It's essentially a Q-affied version of the previous DLUX. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

  • @3BMEP

As I said and you've recalled, Peter, some will say it's a Q-iffed D-Lux 7; again, like you, I found nothing objectionable in that categorization. For someone who likes the idea of the but is more budget constrained, a used '7 or LX100 II may indeed be a better option. It's all good!

Great video, as usual. If I didn’t already own the X100V I would consider this one. I think the 24-70 range is great for everyday use and travel. In my last trip there were moments that I would’ve liked that the X100V had a wider lens. I do own the TCL-X100 but it makes the camera so less pocketable. I did use the digital teleconverter a few times. My only “concern” about this Leica is the lack of weather sealing. As for the micro 4/3 sensor, I own a Lumix G7 and G9 and have had no issues with the sensor size. Of course, that’s my use case, which might be totally different from others.

I am curious if they updated the auto lens cap to give a little more space to fit a filter. I recently put a polarizing filter on my DLux 7 and had to switch back to the standard lens ring and cap because the auto cap wouldn't close over it. And as a side note... I get it. I really enjoy my DLux 7 and am contemplating upgrading to the 8. I think people tend to get lost in the weeds in tech specs and forget about the holistic experience of using a camera. As you mention, this line certainly has shortcomings compared to other models (there's always something that does each individual thing better), but it has a lot of thoughtful, harmonious features which deliver a particular experience, and delivers it well. It is truly greater than the sum of its parts. You've got a very useful zoom range, great aperture, a good sensor/image quality, an excellent control layout/ergos (in my opinion), different aspect ratios, and crazy battery life all packed into an incredibly compact body for what it provides. I mean, where else are you going to find a zoom with that aperture on any other compact camera? Yes, it makes some sacrifices, but it does the job of a street/city/travel/daily carry camera exceedingly well.

I've had a Sony RX100 VII for a while and have never really warmed up to it. The images are kind of flat and the menu system is a nightmare. I'm a Leica shooter with an SL2 and Q2 but like to have a compact for when I want or need one. I'm contemplating trading the RX100 for the D-Lux 8 for a few reasons, but mostly because it's a Leica and also that it shoots in DNG format. I don't expect it to be an SL2 or Q2, but it would be nice to have the Leica experience with a small carry everywhere camera.

If Panasonic were to release an LX100 III it would undoubtedly be technologically driven and equipped with the new 25MP 4/3 sensor. Seeing as this does not have that sensor it seems like more of a sole Leica initiative to give a mild refresh to the D-Lux formula.

And if they do would they not prefer the definitely cool Leica Sofort 2? I'd be interested in an IQ comparison between this camera and an iPhone 15 Pro Max at 11x14 or even 15x20.

Panasonic UI would be good enough - but Pana decided that they didn't have to keep up their best line of MFTs, sell huge MFTs and now a L-mount S9. On the S9 side: don't get it why Pana can't opt for a Leica EVF compatible hot shoe. As left eye dominant I can't stand build in EVFs on the left side... . Maybe Pana and Leica should rethink their aliance a bit further. Seems neither Leica nor Pana can't imagine how much market niche they can capture with products target to a new generation of photographers.

I wonder if this camera, which I see is very much like the Panasonic cameras of the same design, will continue to such in dust without any ability to clean the sensor. My LX100's sensor is filled with dust and essentially usable after f/4. I would buy this camera, or the Panasonic version when it comes out, if the sensor was perfectly sealed from outside dust. Otherwise, I find it hard to pay from a camera whose dusty sensor I can't clean.

So this D-Lux 8 is selling for about the same price as the Fuji X100VI. Seems like a much better bargain with the Leica zoom. M4/3 sensor is smaller but the lens is better. Do I sell my X100F (which is just fine to keep and use) and pony up the difference? Too bad they went the variable aperture route. F2.4 or 2.8 constant aperture should fit the body with the 24-75 (equivalent) zoom. Small nitpick here, TLDR; I want one. PS, I still use my Canon s100!😂

The drawback are no PDAF, 7+ year old Sensor with contrast detect only, and a 10+ year old lens design, from the LX100 (2014). Leica should have used the new Pana 25 MP MFT Sensor, with PDAF, and Panasonic should've created a new, better LX100 Mk. III -which Leica would have used as barebone for this new D-Lux 8, incl. with a new 24-75/1.7-2.8 lens - would love to see a internal focusing, mechanical coupled zoom, and sharper at the corners, etc. And for 1098 bucks, Leica. 🙂 It's a re-cycled, re-cycled LX 100 II (like D-Lux 7) but as a sexy baby Q3 body, with the Q3 menu style - and better build quality body - hence therefore the price increase. The D-Lux 7 looked too much like the LX100 Mark II Panasonic, from the buttons and menus. I would buy one, if it would being 500 EUR cheaper. The best from the D-Lux 8 is the baby Q3 style, -menu system and body shell, and also the upgraded LCD and especially the EVF update. If only it had a better Sensor with PDAF, and a better performing lens.
