I believe focal length is associated with field of view, so a shorter focal length gives you more to see in the frame, but compression has nothing to do with that Compression is affected only by your distance to the subject. Folks are fooled because one usually gets in close with a wide angle lens. If you stand farther back with a wide lens and crop in later you will see the compression changes to a more normal or even telephoto compression.

That's right! Crop sensor equivalent focal length has a different depth of field, but same compression.

People will probably not come to your aid on this one because no one is going to say anything bad about Leica. What bothers me is the comments people make all day long that with the Q3 Leica is giving you a wonderful camera and what would cost $9,000 separately as a lens for only $6,000. Those of us with any brain cells that logic realize that could not possibly happen. There is no way an 8 or $9,000 lens is put on any camera body and being sold for $6,000 by a company that has been overcharging for everything since the dawn of time. I love Leica. I own Leica. I shoot Leica. But there is no $8,000 lens on that camera body being sold for $6,000. I'm sure no one really believes that. In fact it's insulting that they're telling us that's the case. I appreciate you and this video which will be very controversial but many have stated these things already. Whether or not the Q3 is worth $6,000 is people's personal opinions about what it is. Not only is this lens really 24 mm but it certainly isn't constructed like an $8,000 28 mm lens that Leica sells separately. How could it be? First comparing an APSC lens with a Full Frame lens is unfair, the construction is harder on a full frame lens. The reason why Leica advertises it as a 28mm 47MP lens is based on the final result with SDC (Software Distortion Correction). The profile is baked in the file unless your post processing software omit it. Technically it's 24mm 50MP, after SDC it will have a field of view of 28mm 47MP. Reduction in MP is due to distortion correction and cropping in camera. Yes it has distortion, so do other wide angle lenses, some chose to do optical correction, some using software. In order to make the Q lens lighter and faster with autofocus, SDC is a better solution, that's why it costs less than the Lux 28/1.4. Think of it, the Lux 28/1.7 on the Q has weather seal, AF, Macro, Distance scale, great MF, and OIS. There's currently no such features packed lens in Leica's portfolio. The only downside is a bit of distortion. I think it priced reasonable, that's why it is popular. Let's not forget the build quality. I've an X100V, it's great, lens is well optically calibrated, but I still got the Q2 because the image quality is different level, and the dials and buttons are so nice, MF on Q2 is way better than X100V, distance scale is a boon for street photography, the extra MP on Q2 allows me to use Macro to shoot my wife's jewel product and crop in more and yet still razor sharp. App connectivity is way stable than X100V, and it can transfer both JPG and DNG, while Fuji only JPG.

That makes sense. I usually shoot 35mm and I thought all the footage from the so called 28mm was was much wider than I expected. I guess this explains it :)

I just did a couple of quick test shots taken from exaclty the same position, one in RAW and one in JPEG. When imported into Lightroom, the JPEG image is considerably more cropped in than the RAW. Lightroom says that there is a baked in lens correction applied to the RAW image, which I understand is required otherwise the image would be very distorted, but the JPEG seems to be applying an additional level of correction or cropping to the image. I don't have anything to compare it to, apart from an iPhone 14, which I think is a 24mm equivalent, but could it be that the JPEG is actually cropped to a true 28mm FoV?

Yes, the jpeg is cropped to around 28mm. But some are saying it's 26/25 mm. For me it looks like 26mm.

Distortion. I have the 16mm Fujifilm Fujinon 2.8 (24mm FF Equivalent) and Capture One does some automatic crop-in since there’s some one wide angle distortion on the corners when viewed uncropped.

I know people love that lens on the Q but it has some heavy distortion in it for landscape. That would be a big no for me at that price. Seeing your 100v I’m missing mine big time that’s out for software repairs.

Well, that explains why the 16mm f/1.4 on my APS-C Fuji X-Pro gives me the Leica Q look.

Agreed, I had a Q and also an M240 with an M28mm lens. Shooting the same subject from a static tripod, the Q was wider than 28mm.

I want someone to make a true 30mm f/1.8 fixed-lens camera:)

Hello it seems you confuse look with angle of view. The angle of view influences the look but the look comes from so many other things... so what ?

Guess what? everyone and his dog has known its about 26mm for years but then again lots of lenses the whole world over are not bang on the correct to their given focal length, the good news is you get a wider lens than 28mm.
