    I’ll have a sharpening video up, before next weekend. I was going to make an all inclusive video, with the lapping/sharpening, but it was such a task to flatten them, i decided to make it separate.

    Great video! I really love my venevs because of the finish they leave on my knives. I recently bought the 100/240 grit stone, and I enjoy the fact that it cuts slow as I am still figuring my way through sharpening. Then again, the 240 silicon carbide that I have is great for my edges as the coarsest grit, but when it comes to regrinding behind the edge of the knife, I found that the 100 diamond grit worked better for me.

    Nice. I found the exact opposite to be true for me. Diamond just doesn’t cut fast enough. Sic on the other hand, speeds things along. It’s not a bad thing to have slower stones, as you described, esp when learning. That didn’t occur to me. I’ll be sure to bring that point up next time i discuss them 👍

    I just bought these and the gritomatic stones trying to build up my sharpening resources. I was curious about the difference between the gritomatic and sigma select and if you've ever tried sigma selects higher grits like the 10000 or 13000. Been loving the videos

    You started out with some excellent choices 👌. The highest Suehiro stones I’ve used is the g-8 8000 grit. What’s the difference? Well the Suehiro polishes better than the venev, as far as I’ve seen. I’d need to do a side by side to really compare. I’ll put a pin in that, for a future video 👍

    Coooooool can't wait to see how they cut! Have you ever lapped your spyderco benchstones? I'm not sure if it's necessary, but I clean mine with barkeeper's friend and a pumice stone & the medium feels like it's lost a ton of it's bite. Almost feels like it's loaded up with the pumice stone or smth.

  • @Jef

    @Jef

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes i have. They are a real pain to get flat. Once you do, they stay that way for a loooong time. I spent about 30-45 min lapping mine. I usually take my ultra fine stone to 500 grit. From there it breaks in with use. It cuts about as well as the regular fine stone, till break in happens. Usually a dozen or so knives does the trick, but you could speed up the process by using a chisel or something. Just lay it on the stone and go at it hard till the texture gets where you want it.

    Hello, when you say the grit of the powder, what standard do you use ? JIS ? I think talking in micron would make it more simple

  • @Jef

    @Jef

    2 ай бұрын

    Talking in micron would absolutely be helpful! I’ve been saying this in videos for years. Help me convince every abrasive maker to add this information to their products 😁 As for the grit powder, i am only disclosing what i bought, and the information they provide. I couldn’t tell you what grit chart they are using, or what micron size the abrasive is. It’s just lapping powder. Many eBay sellers offer them up in packs of 4. Coarse, medium, fine, and ultrafine. In grit terms, 120-220grit, 400-600grit, 800-1000grit, 1500+ grit.

    Do yall have some diamonds spare over or sumthing? Hehe good video. Il reckon theese need flattening very very rarely especially if used to thin knives and you draw a little grid pattern while doing so so you basically erase that pattern and use the whole stones. Can you a shinogi/thinning line on a kitchen knife?

  • @Jef

    @Jef

    3 жыл бұрын

    That I’m not sure of. The coarse stones from my experience were a bit slow. Since many thinning jobs have a larger surface area than just a v bevel, i think they would be a poor choice. Of course i can always try em out and record the results 😁

    How often do you have to do this? Ive heard that you can do it with sand paper...is this true? Can you use a 320 grit diamond stone/plate to do this?

  • @Jef

    @Jef

    5 ай бұрын

    I duno about the sand paper thing. I never use it. Seems to be it would not be coarse enough to texture the surface, short of glazing it. However, as i said, Ive never tried it. 🤷‍♂️ Can a diamond plate/stone flatten them? Sure. Again, unless that plate is new, i dont think it will condition the surface texture, the way loose sic powder does. It is so cheap (sic powder), why use anything else? Diamond plates are pricey. I want to use them for sharpening, not repairing stones.

    Had you sharpened any knives before doing the lapping?? How many knives do you think it will sharpen provided you condition them between sharpenings or should they be conditioned while sharpening?? Would you recommend them to learn on or something else??

  • @Jef

    @Jef

    3 жыл бұрын

    No i had not sharpened any knives on them yet. They were brand new. Did they REQUIRE flattening? No. How many knives will it sharpen? I couldn’t begin to imagine. Many. Should they be conditioned while sharpening? I don’t think that’s quite necessary. Unless they load up badly, and you have difficulty removing it. It wouldn’t hurt, of course, but since they wear so slowly, I’d think probably over kill. Would i recommend them to learn on? Absolutely. Someone brought to my attention the coarse stones being slow, can help someone who is learning. They don’t cut as fast as a diamond coated plate, or sic stones, which are forgiving, should you make mistakes. Add into the whole package they cut any steel, and they are a fantastic choice.

    These would not require flattening, for a long time. The wear resistance is very high. They will dish however. Even Arkasnas stones, and Norton India, dish. Eventually, they show wear. The only stones you would not have to flatten is diamond plates. Like DMT and Atoma.
