I recently experienced a shaky steering wheel wobble in my Toyota FJ Cruiser. I did these 2 things to fix it.

Glad you figured it out. I also had a similar issue because the shop installed my new tires couldn’t balance it correctly. I brought it back to rebalance for 4 times. It was still shaking. They told me theres nothing they can do, it must be other reasons. I went to another shop, they looked at the balancing weights and started laughing cause they were put on the wrong way. They balanced for me, and the shaking is gone.

Woooooooow! This has been happening to me at highway speeds for the past several months. Balanced the wheels, got an alignment as well and it was still happening at 70-80 MPH! Just bumped my PSI up from 32 (recommended) up to 35 and the shaking is completely gone! You’re a life saver, bruv! Thank you!

cause of my steering wheel oscillation/vibration at around 60-70mph. After new tires, multiple tire balances (including road force balancing), alignment, replacing both sides tie rods inner/outter, upper and lower rocker arms tight. It is the driver side needle bearing (bearing for the front axle that is housed in the front diff. I know some of you said adjusting air pressure worked but I think that could be a temporary band aid for the symptom eventually it will get worse. Note: this only applies to the automatics part-time 4wds not the manual full-time 4wds. Two previous Toyota "specialist" shops unable to figure out ...as the saying goes ....3rd times a charm. Hope this helps someone else save time and money on debugging. Also note: this is a common failure on Tacomas too.

I believe the drive shaft can be easily over greased - causes hydrolock in splines and steering wheel wobble. Mine started doing it immediately after dealer service at about 55 mph. Checked tyre balance and pressures multiple times - no change. Later went away with time. Some time later found out about possible drive shaft over greasing.

Years ago I experienced the FJ death wobble at 40 to 45 on straight, flat asphalt; luckily no traffic so I just got off the gas and let it roll to a stop on its own, no breaking. It was extremely violent and the wheel kept shaking until my truck stopped. For the next year I attempted to recreate the event on that same stretch of asphalt but never could get it to happen, nowhere else either. My 08 only has 37K miles on it and the wobble happened back around 17K miles. All gentle miles....there shouldn't be anything wrong or worn out on my front end. I have always had a feeling there is something potentially wrong and maybe dangerous about the FJ steering setup and I intend to start looking into the matter in the coming weeks. With a new set of Falken Wildpeak tires last week, my 60 to 70mph steering wheel shake is finally gone...I hope. I had the old Big-O front tires rebalanced 3 times but the shake never stopped. I've had very smooth rides on the new set until this morning when I had a steering wheel shake around 30 till 60 and then all was right after that. Getting tired of the steering shakes, along with a knock in the steering column I can both hear and feel when on the dirt....so it's time to get to work and find out what's going on. Thanks for your video. Your story wasn't about the death wobble but I feel the steering wheel shake may be a part of the more violent problem.

When’s the last time you had your transmission serviced? I had vibration on my steering wheel as well. Every time going from 25-34 mph then again from 47-60. I jumped on the forums and I tried the recommendations of servicing the transmission. Changed ALL the fluid and a new filter and wow! No more vibrations. Better than when I bought it. So if it is only happening on the same piece of road, there is a thing when highly exaggerated called death wobble, very prominent on 4x4’s with 35” wheels, it normally happens on deceleration when “all the planets are in alignment” First time it happened to me was on a Dodge 4x4 with 38” tires, it normally would only happen on certain stretches of road and only on deceleration. I have had similar happen on a motorcycle (nicknamed tank slapper) I stopped it on the bikes by installing a steering stabilizer, if your FJ has a steering stabilizer maybe have a look and see if that is showing signs of leaks, damage or fatigue/age. On one 4x4 i owned when the 5” lift kit was installed the hole drilled into the frame to mount the modified tracking arm point (keeps the solid front axel from slipping side to side) well anyway the bolt that fastened to the frame was not tightened to torque spec and getting that tightened helped. When this happened the vehicle was new within a year and the lift kit was also new so no bushing issues. If it continues to happen on the same piece of road but nowhere else, it is a chance the dynamics of the road and exact speed are what is causing the wobble. The first time it happened to me i had no idea what was going on felt like i was an off balance washing machine and just holding on for the ride. It only happened twice but it is something experienced more by vehicles with large wheels tires, and light motorcycles at high speeds. Had it happened once when a dog ran out in front of me and tried to avoid it and impacted causing the wobble, only thing helps on the bike is gradual braking and thrusting legs out forward to help absorb the left/right energy and pushing with all your strength to keep the handlebars from gradually progressing the L/R pendulum effect. Really scary, not knowing what caused it is even worse, and magnified with kids in the car, i can’t imagine. Hope anything I said would give you some more confidence, but if your vehicle is a 2007 and it is 2021, if there is a local quality 4x4 retailer for aftermarket lift kits tires etc that has an Alignment and tire shaving machine, they would also be able to check the age or wear on your suspension bushings. I had one vehicle i replaces all the suspension rubber factory bushings with polyethylene ones due to they were coming up in 15 years old, made a huge difference truck was in the shop for a week and huge improvement when it came out reducing rattles vibrations etc.

Another thing it could be is a bad u joint especially if you don’t lube your joints routinely about every 10,000 miles. If u joint goes dry and destroys the bearing then it just rattles around and goes out of balance thus creates shaking.

It's a virtually stock 2012 with no off-road abuse. 85k miles. Shocks are stock. The only one giving me issues is the front passenger shock which squeaks every now and then. The ride quality feels normal to me but my only other frame of reference is a RAV4 Sport which is really bumpy with the tighter suspension. Also my (phone) camera clamp isn't the most stable either so I imagine it was really obvious and shaky when driving. Thanks for the tip about the shocks, l'll continue to look into it!
