Yes! there are some poems I can "translate" or understand more directly, but there are others where I just feel a reaction or feel what I think they're about but I can't put it into words. Love what you said about emotion being a language

A uni course I'm taking this semester is focused on queer Caribbean literature and my favorite thing I read for it was A Small Gathering of Bones by Patricia Powell. It's also a book with no plot, just character examinations but I loved it. Powells ' prose was amazing and she really immersed me in the messy lives of her characters

i love the thought of poetry being meant to be felt and not always understood. i need to keep that in mind going forward because i really want to read more poetry in the future :')

I'm not into poetry either, don't really understand it but I have enjoyed a few collections. I love that "poetry is meant to be felt and not always understood" because that's true in the poetry I've read.

The thing with poetry for me is that I don't' get' it but it's my go to for exploring hard topics. Which for me is everything about slavery and/or trauma. I don't know why that is because my go to genre is fantasy, sci-fi and romance that has to happy endings. Poetry does make me feel things but I don't know why I seem to be able to handle hard topics almost only through poetry when in every other kind of fiction it just blacken my mood. Humans are weird. Thanks for the recommendations! These kinds of videos are really helpful for building my (for now) small collection of Carribbean authors 💛

Definitely read some poetry this month that I did not understand as well. Couldn’t make heads or tails of it, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

This kind of video is so cool! If you could suggest some modern general fiction or caribean classics would be so interesting

I just read another Jamaica Kincaid book for one of my uni classes. It was more essay style but I really enjoyed it and want to read more from her.

I always feel like I am missing out on what is happening when I read poetry, and I'm not a fan of feeling like I am in the dark (and possibly the only one who doesn't get it), which is why it isn't a genre I pick up often.

@@ONYXPages poetry is really a struggle for me. You might like the Jamaica Kincaid book because it's a bit speculative/surrealistic, but I couldn't wrap my brain around it.
