Fishing the river Blackwater - two roving trips in September (Video 44)

Спорт

This is a video from two of roving fishing trips that I took on the river Blackwater (Hampshire) during september, the Chub on both trips were acting very timid and wily.

Why thanks you, that is very much appreciated. Like yourself, I too love small rivers, they have some lovely condensed features and contain some very special surprises.

Thank you Sam, it is a very pretty little river and you would never think that it was terribly polluted back in 1995 when cyanide leaked into it, it really has recovered well.

Cheers Mick, glad you enjoyed it, I agree with you, it's always nice to see angling from different perspectives and in many ways that is what is good with youtube, being able to share trips via the videos with other anglers on here.

Thanks Darren, it was nice to net that 4+ at the end and you're right it was exciting, especially when the line pinged off the branch, now that was a very heart in mouth moment and I was thinking that I was going to lose it either on that branch or under the snags.

Cheers chap, glad you liked it. I did feed a very light amount of bread from upstream before eventually trying for the two Chub that kept skirting around the gravel run, the area is rather open and this may have led to them acting rather wary, that and the fact I had no cover either. I was mainly using the lobs to try and deter any smaller Chub, it may have been a better idea as you rightly suggest to have used maggots and sprayed some upstream, to see if I could get them competing more

Hello fella, I know they do come out upstream and down, they have certainly been out along the Yateley stretch as well as Hawley meadows, which whilst we are on the subject has just received an added stock of 400 juvenile Barbel recently.

Mark Erdwin hey mark just wondering what stretch of the blackwater you fish I fish it regularly but do not recognise this stretch and also do you tend to pre bait swims at all because I don't really do it I have once or twice but not seemed to change the fishing at all so don't bother now 👍 love the vids though you seem to make it look easy at times 👍 and have you tried fishing up near the camberley meadows area of the blackwater that's my main area at the moment and has produced some amazing fish including my first ever river carp and a pb chub on the same day 😆 the carp was only 6lb 12oz but my chub was nearly the same size at 6lb 2oz from a weir pool up near the sainsburys 👍tight lines and wet nets good luck on your next adventure 🐟

Thank you so kindly for your words regarding the videos, to know that people are watching them from Europe is quite special, I hope that you did catch your first Chub during the fall, please do let me know if you did and I am very sorry once again for the very late reply.

Hello mate, I fish quite a few different areas such as a public stretch near Yateley/ Swan lane/Sandhurst. I have a Blackwater video due to be uploaded next week. I do sometimes trickle in a little bait and then re-visit swims, but I also mainly fish a spot by just dropping into it and offering a bait without any other otherings, so a bit of both, oppurtunistic and at times a little baiting.I know the area you mean at Camberley some nice fish through those sections too, congratulations on the carp and chub, a 6lb chub is a quality fish in my opinion.

Great video Mark! Why don't you try trotting the shallow swim with the fencing with a worm, some flake or maggots? Loose feed a pinch each cast to get them going. The fish might not be so coy if they see a snack floating off downstream :) Tight lines...

Hi Mark. Have watched a number of your videos now....they're great entertainment. One of the things I notice is that there doesn't seem to be many swims that deter you. I probably wouldn't have looked twice at that last spot because it was so overgrown. What kind of breaking strain are you using there? Any other tips for these tight spots?

  • @francolinobasco

Hello Alphonso, no some swims that are tight don't deter me that much, especially as in the case of that last swim, which whilst containing streamer weed was relatively clear of any serious snags barring the overhanging tree and some roots, on rivers like this it pays off to try and drop a bait into such areas due to them being spots where the fish feel safe and have cover from predation such as Cormorants. For most of my roving when chub fishing I tend to fish 6lb line, this combined with a forgiving and well balanced rod usually gives me some room for error. Thanks for the kind words, glad you are enjoying the vlogs too.

I totally agree Ray and not just them, Thames water too with their in some cases archaic sewage treatment works. Thames Water have had a lot of their sewage treatment plants partly funded if not fully funded in some cases by housing developers, which is fair enough as with the increase in housing caused by property development developers should be paying into and funding sewage treatment works, that said though Thames Water have been guilty for many severe pollution cases on our waterways,I have come across them cleaning sewers out that have more or less erupted on to roads right next to water courses, when questioned as to what had happened myself and driver were asked to move along and they didn't want to be transparent or open about what was being done until we decided to stay parked on the road until we got a response. Just down the road from me a few houses which are next to a small pumping station can no longer use their garden for growing vegetables for the next year and lost all their crop from this year, due to Thames waters pumping station packing up and raw sewage then filling the garden up. In response to this did Thames Water offer compensation? Did they offer to perhaps pay to replace the gardens soil and maybe purchase a few weeks fresh vegetables as way of compensation? Did they heck, they sent both home owners a bouquet of flowers as an apology, now if that isn't taking the proverbial then I don't know what is mate.

Sadly the pollution of rivers will continue as a result of leaving the EU environmental protections will be loosened in favour of financial interests.

That is sadly one of my biggest worries as directives for clean waterways becomes watered down even more.
