Jacob grew up listening to Take 6. I recently saw an interview with them where they spoke about how blown away and honored they were to be a part of this cover. Jacob's story is remarkable, I've spent my whole life dedicated to music and I've never come across an individual like him, he flips everything you thought you knew about music upside down. Wait til you hear his arrangements of Moon River and In The Bleak Midwinter, you will be a changed person afterwards :D

Jacob is a legend already and he hasn't long started his musical journey. I love that he involves as many people as possible in his work. The backing singers here are the acapella gospel choir, Take 6. Jacob is from London but in reality he represents the world and could be from anywhere.

One thing about Jacob- he is a generous and talented collaborator, loves to lift up the work of other great musicians. Two more recommendations- His solo, after midnight rendition of Coldplay's "Fix You" as a benefit for a cancer organization, totally different and rapturous musical experience. Also, the live version of "Never Gonna Be Alone" with Lizzy McAlpine and John Mayer is just lovely.

You have no idea the level of genius at work here. Beyond his vocal range and control including the ability to sing in microtones. He composes and arranges all of these and when Quincy Jones saw his Don't You Worry About a Thing cover on the internet then contacted him and eventually became his manager. Herbie Hancock and some other musical greats got involved then too when was maybe early 20s. On earlier songs it's him singing all parts but also playing Bass, drums, keyboards, guitar, mandolin and so on. No horns so he wrote for orchestra too. He uses Logic X to overdub himself and edits his own videos too. Yes, that's Take 6 singing in it who he's also performed with. I didn't find out about him until about 2 months ago and saw him in concert two weeks ago where did his own music and several genres and this gospel style choral piece below was premiered that night. He also leads the audience in improvised 3 part choral harmonies. If you understand music theory at all you'd see new wonders when he talks about that. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqx8qKySkZe3eZc.html

I am listening to JC for some years now. I grew up in Vienna with the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Genesis,… the 80th were saved by Sting, the 90th completely lost. And then Jacob appeared and gave me back my faith in musical creativity. He is Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Ravel, Hindemith, Stravinsky, Debussy, Ligety. All in one. Still, I keep doing my music, and I absolutely love the fact, that I can not just copy anything he does.

I first saw Jacob on a "expert shows a thing at 5 levels of increasing complexity" (not the actual title, can't remember it) where he demonstates harmony and harmonising to 5 different levels of musician, todler, middleschooler, uni person, pro violinist and Herbie Hancock...who I believe tutored him at one point, but I kinda see Jacob as having done the martial art thing of surpassing his master, and I think Herbie is very proud of that. I think an interesting thing about Jacobs voice is the lack of vibrato. It's such a pure tone in the sense of all the elements and overtones making up his tone are steady during each note (because of the no vibrato) and we are so unused to that, and then he layers those and again because of the lack of vibrato it's a bit like a church organ with the fullness of the sound.

Jacob’s arrangement of this song is like a musical buffet where every food choice is scrumptious. Your reaction was spot-on, and you have a long way to go yet. I would also suggest Moon River (video version), but there’s so much to sift through with Jacob’s catalog that it hardly matters where you go next.

I’m a music teacher. Jacob Collier is an historical figure and he is not yet 30. This young man is the greatest musical genius of our time and possibly all time. He puts the genius of Mozart to shame. This is good and bad. It is good because it blows the minds of the greatest musicians alive. His music makes you think. The bad part is that music is also emotional and that is where Jacob will come short. Jennifer Hudson won’t be nearly as musically 16:03 mind blowing as Jacob, but will draw at the heart strings in a way that brings out deep emotions. I can only listen to Jacob so long; then I need to shift to music that is much simpler; but moves the heart.

I call Jacob the "god of music". He did everything himself. That means he wrote the entire arrangement for the orchestra and Take 6. If you listen to Moon River, he uses quarter tones (entirely vocal, because instruments are all a little off - called equal temperament), He is from England and he is just turned 29.

The group is called Take 6 and they are the greatest acapella group in this universe. They sing six part harmony and they've been doing their thing since 1981. The group was started by Claude McKnight III (the one with the grey goatee and hat), who happens to be the elsest brother of Brian McKnight. The dude with the standing bass is the bass of the group. Quincy Jones calls them "The baddest vocal cats on the planet". You should check them out. Oh and by the way, Jacob composed and arranged all of this in just 6 hours, let that sink in...lol.

Majority of his youtube channel has the behind the scenes lectures and master classes of his songs, the inner workings of musical theory with examples of how its applied to his work, and the variations styles of how he likes his videos produced in. if its not on his youtube channel then check out the college lectures he gives out in the same way; you can find the masses and on youtube too

When I saw that you were going to react to "All Night Long" I honestly couldn't have been happier. You do such fun reactions. I had a smile on my face from start to finish. I can see that a lot of Jacob fans have already started filling in the story for you so I'll do my best not to repeat too much. Big picture Jacob arranged this, orchestrated this, sang and played all the instruments you saw. He produced this and did the entire video himself. To say Jacob is talented really doesn't even scratch the surface. Jacob and Quincy are great friends and Jacob is admired by musicians the world over and without a doubt is a genius. He's also super humble, giving, creative off the charts and has been accused of being an alien more times than I or anybody else can probably count. I believe Jacob is still just 27. He's currently on a world tour with his ongoing band and some of us are waiting expectantly for his fifth album (the forth and final in an epic series). Your energy is so great I really hope you'll react to some more Jacob. For an all vocal/acapella taken to the next level of the next level...well you get the idea. Consider reacting to Jacob's version of "Moon River". This is a profoundly beautiful rendition that only Jacob could have conceived of and created. Jacob Collier is like Stevie Wonder adding the visual elements (who I'm sure is also another big time mentor). If you didn't catch all the "celebrities" you might not have noticed Quincy Jones (who himself was a young genius). Fantastic rendition. :)

Hey, that was a very nice and appropriate reaction. Loved every single bar of it. Jacob Collier is from UK, in his MIDTWENTIES. He basically started as a youtube-musician who has perfect pitch and plays almost every instrument. Hes has them all in his room. Hence the title of one of his albums. I first saw him covering a song by Imogen Heap and was blown away. (Hide and Seek) Then I found and hereby highly recommend his series of youtubevideos #iHarmU where he got snippets of other musicians/singers that he then reharmonized. You can find a lot of people featured there, like Dodie (great singer, composer) or Herbie Hancock. The group of men you figured out is „Take 6“, yes, the genius vocalists. The big orchestra is the „Metropol Orkest“, they collaborate a lot. Quincy is his producer and mentor (as he is for Dirty Loops). For more „shock and awww…“ moments I‘d suggest Jacobs all a capella „Moon River“. Make sure you have a box of church towels, you will need them all. Thanks for your enthusiastic reactions. Love it❤

I think most of mty comments have already been made, but you might like to know that the orchestra is the Metropole Orkest with conductor Jules Buckley. Dancing in the street are, I think, some of his crew from his 2019 World Tour - at 2:22 you can see his bass player Robin Mullarkey in the blue shirt, and then at 2:40 Maro in the red top who was part of his band on that tour (she represented Portugal in the Eurovision song contest 2022). Last, but not least, Jacob's mother Susie Collier, a professional musician, appears with her violin at 3:51.

You asked what instruments does Jacob play. He plays: - piano superbly, and keyboards, - guitars (acoustic, electric, bass, and others in the guitar 'family') - double bass. His Mum is a professional violinist and music teacher, so he likely can play some string instruments with a bow, but I've never seen it. - melodica - a human-breath powered, very low cost, 'organ'. It's popular in UK schools music teaching. AFAIK, it's the lowest cost genuinely polyphonic instrument. So folks can play chords. - drums and percussion. He has a drum kit, and many unusual percussion instruments. - "Harmonizer" which is a specialised keyboard instrument designed in collaboration with Ben Bloomberg, a PhD student at the MIT Media Lab. It uses his voice as a sound source, then enables him to play an entire 88-key instrument using his voice. So he can sing harmonies live. I've *never* seen him play (on video) 'brass' eg. trumpet, or trombone, or 'woodwinds' eg. saxophone, or bassoon. He can get most of those sounds on a modern keyboard. Best Wishes. ☮ _JACOB COLLIER: WTF IS A HARMONISER? | EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL PREVIEW_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqKkuKOygM3edKQ.html (1m:44s) explains it a little. Jacob has perfect pitch (aka absolute pitch). He says when he's healthy he can recognise notes to '5¢' (5% of a semitone). More usefully he can sing it, and sing the scale around it. So he never uses autotune on his published songs. He can also sing the notes in an "equal tempered scale" or "Just Scale" (aka "harmonic tuning") for practically any scale. So he doesn't have the limitations of a normal keyboard. He demonstrates this when he harmonises to short clips of music sent to him by patreons in his #IHarmU series. Eg _Jacob Collier's __#IHarmU__ Vol. 2_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/oK58qJRrZczIkc4.html The little girl singing twinkle twinkle (3rd clip) and getting distracted is adorable, then Jacob adds magic. ✨

Very enjoyable reaction video. Thank you and you had just the correct combination of feelings that you expressed at the end! I’m sure you’ve now discovered Jacob is an Uber talented young man from North London. And I would absolutely advise you go see him live should you ever get the chance - even in 35 years time. He is the only person I have ever come across, who is potentially on a par with Prince as alive act - and that’s really saying something.

Jacob did a live stream deep dive into the Logic Session for this song, talking about how he put it all together (it's almost as unbelievable as the song itself!): kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3WBxZaEj7G-o6Q.html

It possibly worth saying that JC was due to fly from London to Amsterdam to record with the orchestra and only decided on "All Night Long" at midnight the night before. He arranged all the orchestral parts in the following 6 hours before having to leave for the airport. The video on the other hand took him a year to complete.

Word is that the night before recording this with the orchestra, JC could not decide whether to do this or a Michael Jackson song. They decided on this and he scored and arranged it in six hours. He had never scored for an orchestra before. If you have not already, check out Fix You. As stunning as it is, it was the first time he had played it on piano. I saw him recently - his relationship to musical instruments, piano in particular, is supernatural.

There was an earlier video Jacob arranged/performed/recorded/produced, (his cover of “Don’t You Worry ‘bout a Thing”), QJ watched…. and when he finished watching, he gathered his staff and told them, “Find him and sign him”. I once heard Jacob referred to as ‘the John Williams of vocals’… ‘nuff said. Some of the performers are gospel a cappella group Take 6 and the Metropole Orkest. Here is a tease to his most recent epic recording “Bridge Over Troubled Water” working with Tori Kelly kzread.info/dash/bejne/o4Gkpquqabaocso.htmlsi=4WyGu3C3CNhMzxHx

New to your channel and loving it already. I can't tell if you have a musical background, but you keep asking how he does it. Well, he recorded a stream where he basically walks through the whole song in Logic Pro. It's long and pro'ly not suitable for a reaction or anything, but it's /fascinating/ how he composes music. kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3WBxZaEj7G-o6Q.html
