You should listen to the studio version of this song. With concert and live versions it's sometimes hard to understand all the lyrics unless you already know the song.

Anthony Newley wrote the songs for two hit Broadway shows and later the songs for the classic movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (not all today's pale remakes) people still love (Candyman, which Sammy also made his hit). Sammy was a super multitalented dancer, singer, actor, comic, and impressionist despite all the prejudice and segregation EVERYWHERE in America then.

He literally grew up on stage. I think he started at the age of 3. He worked in vaudeville, traveling all over never went to school. The stage was his school. Perhaps you should watch the PBS American Masters episode. Also when one is really into it/performing how they look is not considered, face scrunched, twisted sweating. ...And I don't think he had an underbite or a lisp.

14:32 Do you really think this guy is "opinionated"? No, my love, this is a (very adult) comedy. It's simply professional entertainment consisting of jokes and satirical sketches intended to make an audience laugh. Joan Rivers led a very proper and elegant life. She was nothing like her comedy act, but instead 'tasteful'. The world of wokeness has lost their understanding of humor. Dice is a caricature of a cavemen, rather than being a biker in "Grease," he's projecting a parody, and this is not his reality.

This was the password skit on thi show. The card was part of the game Passwrod. Tim Conway was ad libbing as he had a habit of doing on the show. The first story was rehearsal, yes in front of a live audience. The director would come around and give them all notes about what was changing for the evening show as live. This time they got a acrd saying the elephant story had changed. He also told tem good luck. No one on that couch knew what was going to be said. Even Tim said he ad libbed a lot of it. Vicki knew they'd have issues with her saying asshole on live TV at that time. That was why she said it.A get me eh? No i am getting you!

Yea, the eyes and the smile, that's his mischievous look... you'll know that something is about to happen. It might be a guitar solo where there usually is none, or some fast paced rhythm section, or just him singing those high notes. Btw, Tommy did very cool version of "Blinding lights" by The Weeknd, just sayin'

During this time period Sammy was married to a Swedish Actress named Mia Britt. Theirs was one of the first high profile interracial marriages and a huge part of the American Public disapproved. It was bad enough that even though Sammy campaigned for John F Kennedy in 1960 , Sammy was not invited to Kennedy's inauguration ceremony because he was married to a white woman. Frank Sinatra was the master of Ceremony and Dean Martin was supposed to participate but Dean politely told them to F off and did not attend in support of Sammy.

I feel like this parody is not a dig on the original song but an insult to the artists in the 90's when they were no longer on the top of their game. So it was insinuating that these artists would be willing to regroup in order to make money rather than do it for a good cause.

Sammy was one of THE MOST beloved persons in the whole country, back in the day. Humble, self deprecating, funny, talented, soft spoken and geniunely talented. Lost an eye in an automobile accident, in 1954. THE ONLY TIME in his life that he wasn't wearing his lucky mezuzah, a gift from Eddie Cantor. One of the reasons for his eventual conversion to Judaism.

You're dead wrong about Americans' perception of blacks at that time, music was a major factor in ending the racial divide and artists like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Teddy Wilson, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, and countless others were seen as the best musical artists in the country, and held a warm place in American's hearts. If Sammy Davis was not respected and esteemed, you wouldn't be watching this performance. I've been around since '46 in Seattle, there was no racial separation and the races mixed freely, because Seattle was, and is, an International city, and I never saw a racial confrontation in all that time. Facts.

He was married 3 times. His 2nd marriage 1960-1968 caused alot of controversy as she was white. He also lost an eye in a car accident. Sammy's left eye was smashed when his face flew into the bulbous metal steering wheel hub of his new lime green Cadillac. In 1954, cars had no seat belts. Sammy wore an eye patch and then a glass eye for the rest of his life.
