Thanks to youtube for allowing me to see things I only heard during my childhood. Carole King is my favorite female musician - songwriting, playing and singing in one. No bright lights, no sexy dress, no extravagant production or fancy gimmicks, no feisty and noisy crowd drowning everything, no scandal. Oh, more intimate music performance is simply my cup of tea.

As with others here, this is one of my favorite Carole King songs. I like it overall, but there are these moments in it that really send me, and you reacted in the same kind of way I always do. First, the groove is just soooo sweeeet!!! It's just simple and pretty and evokes a sense of ... a land, a place, an experience that is available to all of us. We've been there, and it's possible in our future as well. And my favorite moment that I live for in this song is when those vocal harmonies come in on "been SOOOOO long, I'm living till then." I always sang that 3rd harmony part along with, and it has always felt exquisite. Thanks again for your delightful, and genuine, and wide open reactions. Listening to this brought tears, and it was a deep joy to share the love of this song, and of Carole King's incredible creative gifts, with you.

Britt, you are so delightful to watch and especially when you are organically connected to a singer like you are with Carole King. She had always been a light to anyone who really listens to her messages. I just received a couple of cds that I ordered after seeing a PBS live special of James Taylor and Carole King singing individually and together. It was magical for me and when they sang "You"ve Got A Friend" THAT was what made me decide to buy the cds. Carole still Rocks on Piano. So fantastic ❣

It's pronounced "KAY-nan". Little town in upstate Connecticut. King does make SOME subtle biblical references in her song ("but with our day to day demands, we all need a promised land...") My take on the song's meaning is that, because she lived there for a time (in Connecticut), she loved it so much, that with all the hustle and bustle going on in her life, she couldn't wait to finally get back to the place she grew up in. And on a more macro level, those folks maybe felt the same way as she-to escape the daily stress of everyday life, and return to a place that was peaceful and worry-free. Their own personal "promised land", if you will.

Carole King is a wonderful performer. She started out as a songwriter and had to be cajoled into performing, for which we are all enriched. You know what I wish? I wish Carole King and Karen Carpenter had done a few duets. Can you imagine how epic THAT would have been? Oh well, at least we have Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris having performed as Trio, and that was great. Also Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson as a country supergroup The Highwaymen. They did three whole albums together.

Discover Carly Simon (all us guys were in love with her). This song reminded me so much of Carly's song, "Let the River Run", the theme of the Oscar winning "Working Girl" from the 80s. But back in the 70s, Carly broke the radio with songs like Anticipation, Nobody Does it Better, That's the Way I Always Thought it would Be, and of course You're So Vain. Simon was notorious for her stage fright. By the way, Carly's sister wrote the music for the Tony winning The Secret Garden, and they are daughters of the wealthy publishing Simons.

@@evanhughes1510 Well, she may have been able to play classical studies and such but, as it happens Neil was on a completely different level as a classical player and studied at Juliard and was on the way to being a classical concert pianist when he jumped ship and decided that writing pop/rock songs was his thing. But, I wasn't suggesting that Neil taught Carole how to play the piano but that what she got from Neil was his wide knowledge of contemporary pop/rock/r&b piano styles.

Sedaka may have also learned a lot from her because his chord structures in the 70s are mure like what she used in on Tapestry. He was pretty unkind towards her in his autobio, and she said she never aspired to be a virtuoso on the piano. Regardless, there is a level of schmaltz in Sedaka's music that King avoids for the most part.
