So “Lead the Way” is considered one of her HARDEST songs vocally because of the riffs, and BREATH CONTROL so u should def react to it, it’s from her 2001 album “Glitter”. But first react to the live performances of Emotions and “Vision of Love” which was her first ever song and single, it’s from her self titled debut album “Mariah Carey” from 1990, and it went #1💀 imagine having ur first ever song go #1 lmao. Anyways and after u do that song I’ll give u the BEST live performances to it.

Mariah carey is one of the strongest people I've ever seen. Her entire life was a complete tragedy. Her father was black and her mother was white so she is biracial. Her family suffered from racism people tried to kill them. They killed their dogs too. She has an older brother and an older sister. When her parents divorced she stayed with her mother. Her sister abused her at at young age she drugged her and tried to sell her to a pimp. Then mariah married tommy Mottola the CEO if sony music who abused her for 5 years then when she divorced him he sabotaged her career. But then she made a huge comeback and returned to her pinnacle. She suffers from bipolar as well. She is a great example of no matter what happens in life you should never give up

She was abt 21 here and it was 1991. Also yes the animal in the video was a lemur. And actually the high notes she kept doing here kept getting higher and higher, so the first “whistle note” (the high notes) is not NEARLY as high as the last whistle notes she hit on the song, or the climax one which is the one that goes like stairs upwards. Also for the live performances u NEED to react to her singing this live at MTV Unplugged 1992 and the VMAS 1991!

Keep it going. You will definitely be surprised. Music in every genre over several decades. There are live versions where she goes even higher in this song. Since you mentioned whitney, they do have a duet btw. And she definitely has 19 number ones, could have had 21. She blocked herself in one situation where she was at number one and two at the same time. Ans early in her career, her record company / ex-husband, pulled the sales of a single to prove a point, so that song only made it to number 2 when it was projected to go number one that week.

A great one to check out LIVE, and at almost 52 is 'We Belong Together' (Mimi's Valentine Mix), recorded at home, 02/14/21. 'WBT' won here 2 Grammy's at age 36- Best R&B Female Vocal Performance AND Best R&B song, so it's great to see her pull it off LIVE at almost 52. The album 'WBT' came from, her comeback in '05 "The Emancipation of Mimi" , won a Grammy for Best R&B Album (Mimi her nickname). There's a bonus track on the re-release once it hit Platinum, 'Don't Forget About Us'...STUNNING VIDEO!

Matt, it's interesting to see your reaction, listening to Mariah for the first time... I need to point out something here (which is underrated) about Mariah's voice. It's not only about how high she can go, pls also pay attention to how low her voice can go too (especially in "You and I - a tribute to Stevie Wonder), where even some men can't reach those low notes. Another great performance that would probably impress you is medley of "If only You Knew/Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Hope you will enjoy these recommendations as much as I do!!

Mariah Carey was a back-up singer for her best friend, Brenda K Starr on Brenda's #13 1988 Billboard Hot 100 Hit, "I Still Believe." This was Mariah's 5th consecutive #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1991 (and she only had released five songs at this time and it's a record for most consecutive #1 by a debut artist). Mariah's mother was an opera singer and what you heard is what they call a "whistle note," the hardest note for any singer to hit.

Lol it's funny what he said about changing the station if this song was playing on the radio. This song came out 3 decades ago, it's totally understandable if someone born years after it came out is not really into it, it's just one of her classics and it's something that you need to listen to if you want to get an actual sense of what the fuss is about with Mariah Carey being the legend that she is. She was indeed compared to Whitney in the beginning, but she quickly held her own, and yes she could perform the hell out of this song live back then. She basically owned the 90's lol, hit after hit, it was crazy. It's always been about that voice, she's The Songbird Supreme.

Mariah is one of the pioneers of fusing hip hop and pop music. She wanted to venture into RnB and hip hop earlier in her career, but her label wanted her to stick to a certain image and sound. If you're looking for deep lyrics, her best writing is on the Butterfly album.

Mariah Carey was born in 1970. Same year as her friend Debbie Gibson, Jaya Ramsey and her friend Regine Velazquez. Mariah Carey was in the band of Brenda K Starr. But, Mariah Carey quit to start a solo career. Debbie Gibson wanted Clive Davis to sign Mariah Carey to Atlantic Records. But Davis complained, "Too many teens are signed. No need for another one!" He regrets that! 😖 Debbie Gibson and Mariah Carey are still friends. ❤❤ 1991. Metallica, Nirvana and Garth Brooks had major albums released. Bryan Adams had Billboard Sing of the Year with Everything I Do I Do It for You. Rap, soul, country and Seattle rock 🎸 were on the rise. Then, Mariah Carey released her 2nd album, Emotions. Same name as the sing here. Parts were recorded where I lived, and still live, the San Francisco Bay Area 🌉. The belts. Whistle 🤯. I was disappointed 😞 that this song was not up higher in the Billboard charts. Mariah Carey was underrated in 1991. 😖 But, she rose 🌹 and made the 1990s her decade! 👏 She influences Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Morissette Amon, more singers from Asia 🌏.

Great videos. So, the whistle register, is a unique part of the vocal chords that certain people can access it. I'm 38, and in my youth (about 20), I could hit it too. Over the years my chords dimensions have shifted to occlude too much to allow the shape of the chords needed. It can be access by squeaking and lightly breathing air through a vocal fry (see vocal fry to learn about that), it's a very unique portion of the chords. Not many people can do it safely enough to include it in a performance, and for Mariah especially, she seems to be the Empress of the Whistle Register, able to summon it on demand (even access it easier than belting), change the pitch with ease, add words, texture and coloring to the sound. Even among the unique, she is unique.

Wait until you get to Lana Del Rey’s Born to Die album 💿. As much as I love Mariah Lana is prob the most original artist I’ve heard. Not a powerhouse vocalist, but she mixes old Hollywood sounds with hip hop, rock, psychedelic music depending on the album. She’s also a huge Eminem fan and doesn’t hold back in her lyrics and videos. National Anthem is prob a good one to start with. I’ve seen channels get over 1,000 likes in a few months just from those two artists alone. Thanks for the great reaction again you’re a natural at this and the editing is clever!
