Mariah writes all her songs. I can highly recommend listening to her discography in chronological order. She's got 15 studio albums on top of Xmas albums , MTV Unplugged and a ton of other material.

If yall wanna hear her singing this live you should react to Emotions live at MTV Unplugged 1992 if you want a polished perfect performance, however if u want one where she takes a bit more risks react to live at the VMAS 1992 because she goes even HIGHER than the recorded version and it’s in a higher key than the other live performance too, however she does have more rasp and it doesn’t sound AS clean as the other one, personally I LOVEEE her rasp even more tho.

The high notes aren't a strain on her voice. She can actually speak in that tone and sing words in that tone as well. She has a very raspy voice and the whistle comes easy for her.

Funny Jim said it sounded like a whistle cuz that's exactly what they call it , a "whistle tone" last season of the Voice there was a girl who could do the "whistle tone" although she didn't win.

Emotions is far from Mariah's greatest lyrics. I'd recommend "The Roof" by her if you're looking for a great pen work. Also, I think you'd like to watch Mariah AND Whitney singing together on stage. Search for "When You Believe" live at The Oprah Winfrey Show, 1998. Best performance of their song.

To sing in the whistle register is actually very easy for Mariah. She can even enunciate in full sentences. The only strain in her voice, especially now that she's older, is belting in the full chest register. Mariah ever since she was a kid had vocal chord nodules. Her ENT Doctor often does ted talks, and he says he refuses to remove them to preserve the quality of her tone and the structure of her vocal chords. Many singers have had the same vocal issues. However, most singers get them surgically removed, and in Some experienced drastic tonal changes in their voice like Bonnie Tyler, some experience vocal stamina issues like Adele, and worst case scenario is the complete loss of the singing voice like Julie Andrews. All things considered, Mariah tonal quality has remained intact through the years. On a well rested day with ample vocal warm-ups, and a relaxed setting she can still sing most of her repertoire. She just can't do it as extensively as she did in the 90's. It's one of the main reasons why she rarely does tours outside of Christmas. She has her vocal nodules in relative control, her main issue as a live performer is her stage freight. Years of constant ridicule and pressure to stay on par with 1990 self from the public has really gotten to her, especially in recent years. Which is very sad.

I think that's so funny that you mention repetitive, because this song was never intended to be a single. Mariah wanted to make a fun song for the album, because so many of the songs were ballads. This was supposed to sprinkle some fun on to it and help her explore her range while paying a nod to the new emerging trend of "house" music. House music is songs that just continuously go on for a long time and tend to be high energy music.
